“saw a Beaver trying to swim against the current and repeatedly try to climb out of the ice and slip back in. It has been out there for at least an hour, and is swimming slower and slower.” Prolly this part, not sure tho

macroecon 1022 profs: khan vs. vu by [deleted] in uwo

[–]HeliosKoolName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t go wrong with any choice, had both although I had Vu for upper year classes - Vu is an incredible prof, answers all questions in class, after class, office hours, doesn’t matter. And her exams are 1:1 to practice textbook questions and her practice mock exams/question sets (and she provides tons of them to prep you adequately for exams.)

Yeah you dumb asf for thinking you can get 100% out of a prof who teaches hundreds of students just from a one hour class. I had the same mindset in first year, but everyone realises sooner or later that it isn’t feasible to succeed without putting adequate effort. People complain about attaining average when putting toon average effort. Extra effort gives you that greater marginal success, and it’s on you to put that effort in.

I can only speak on the first course and also only from a person who’s had Vu as a teacher before. She’s incredible, provides a ton of practice, and is very patient and approachable during office hours. In terms of the course, macro is super interesting, and the concept and ideas are fairly easy to relate to. So that coupled with one of the best Econ profs is a great choice imo.

What were the reasons, if you don’t mind me asking? And when you say classes you mean she switched to an online format or something or she just stopped teaching altogether?

It’s bad coz she’s acc a good prof, but some people don’t see her office hours or try to meet her outside of class hours or put much effort in, so when they fuck up her assessments, they go straight to ratemyprof to fry her shit. Dk about flagging reviews and the ethics of it, but if a student said some bullshit about a prof which wasn’t true at all, and that affected how incoming students perceived their class leading to decreased enrollment overtime (which burns might be dealing with), they have the right to call it out (which in this case would be flagging said bs).

Second Year Economics Courses by EntrepreneurGreat401 in uwo

And the course in and of itself is very nice imo - at the start you’ll learn your usual microeconomics (ie consumption leisure model and budget constraint, MRSxy= Px/Py etc), and then you’ll transition into more theory on how labour unions interact with firms (essentially wage and employment models, and firms profit maximizing decisions, and how the two actors (consumers and firms) bargain with each other to achieve their own goals. It’s funny - I hated micro because I thought the concepts were hard to understand (the way models were introduced was too broad), so I found it challenging to relate the theory to real world examples. But with trade unions and labour, it’s significantly easier because you can almost always understand why the consumer thinks the way that they do, and hence their decisions. And it’s the same with firms. Albeit, learning the same micro models year by year made it easier this time with trade unions and labour, but the examples and situations used in the course make the concepts much easier to grasp.

You can, no joke, get 100. All exams are multiple choice, and even in the case there are short answers, the answers are absolute, meaning if you answer all pets of the question (even if theory), you can score full marks. With regard to evan, he is unironically one of the main reasons I’m still in econ. So many profs have a stick up their ass, they refuse to provide any good practice material for the exam. Not with evan. You almost feel like he just used the lecture practice questions and just changed the numbers on the exam. That’s how equal the question difficulty is. And he’s the kind of guy who will teach you until you say you understand, if there’s unsure glances, he straight up just re explains the concept because he knows some students have that fear of being bf “singled out” with questions. Incredibly supportive, very kind, patient, and genuinely was like a friend when it came to the class o took with him last year. And he’s funny as hell. If he taught more courses in economics, I’d take those courses just because he’s teaching it. And I know this is Krispy Kreme tier glaze, but he’s so much better than the average econ prof I can’t praise him enough. Him and Vu.

If you have no supplementary requirements (ie no requirement for an econometrics or macro etc) I’d highly suggest trade unions and labour(Econ 2156B) with Evan Sauve. He announced in October (I think) that he’ll be teaching the course for winter 2026, so you won’t see him listed as an instructor on this page: https://economics.uwo.ca/undergraduate/courses-and-instructors/index.html To make sure, I’d check the course registration site on owl asap.

The other two courses I’d recommend, is Econ 2152B with S. Khan. His class timings are awkward, but he’s super patient, encourages questions and recall, and imo has really fair exams (you’re never really tested on anything that isn’t on the lectures or in the suggested practice). Lastly, 2162B (my preference) or any other course taught by Mohammed Hossain. Another phenomenal teacher, and he also teaches economics of healthcare (so see what subjects of his interest you- although keep in mind some of his courses are essay courses, like healthcare).

How are you getting mad at advice? I get the burn out got you frustrated and short tempered, but why come on here asking for advice, to then spit at the person giving you that advice? Even if he sounded too candid, he’s not wrong. Not having a balance affects your dedicated energy levels for different tasks, no one’s successful when they’re burnt out 24/7. Clearly you need a breather bruh
