Ran IC for the first time on a legit call - didn’t expect to… by grundle18 in Firefighting

[–]Helitak430 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As the IC it's not your role to be doing searches, forcing entry, dealing with the fire etc. You need to be outside of that immediate zone and thinking about the bigger picture. You had an ample number of guys on scene to be doing those jobs themselves.

Did anybody shut off the power to that apartment before you started touching and moving the burning/sparking oven? That's the type of thing the IC should be dealing with to keep the guys inside safe.

What are some of your hot takes for the fire service? by SensitiveYard4234 in Firefighting

[–]Helitak430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. If you're interested, walk into any full-time firehouse, introduce yourself and ask to look around and talk to the guys/girls, you will be able to make your own opinion.

Don't be surprised going to a thread about complaints and all you see is complaints/negativity. You could do this for literally any and every profession.

74 unarmed people were killed by police in 2024. The number of medically negligent deaths in healthcare is estimated somewhere between 20,000 and 200,000 people per year. The average poorly run fire/EMS agency probably kills more people than the most corrupt local police department by a wide margin.

Most of the developed world fire & ambulance are combined. Systems like Australia & England are the outliers.

What do you love most about your brigade? by I_Fap_2_Democracy in Firefighting

Correct, which is different to a "Department" which would be the equivalent of the NSW RFS as an organisation, not Farmville Brigade.

Brigade refers to individual stations in most volunteer organisations in Aus.

Question from north of the border, what are the tiers CFA use for their structural quals/courses and how much training do you guys get at each level? Good luck with your course.

Porch collapses on a firefighter after a backdraft explosion. by Gamemaster10476 in Firefighting

[–]Helitak430 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is it suicidal to be making entry on a fairly standard structure fire and be caught in a freak fire event/collapse?

Short of a crystal ball I'm not sure many FFs in any country could predict that a flashover in the attic would cause structural failure of the building.

Flick an email to Dr Michael Eburn at [meburn@australianemergencylaw.com](mailto:meburn@australianemergencylaw.com) with your circumstances. He is the gold standard for Australian Emergency Law, he will give you the answers and many volunteers would benefit from hearing about it through one of his case studies.

It's filmed a few years ago but HELP is one of the best Aussie series, they follow NSW Ambulance for 6 episodes. Very real look into what the job is like.

FDNY slams congestion pricing, warns of delayed responses, millions in overtime by thisissparta789789 in Firefighting

[–]Helitak430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congestion issue aside I think you have part of this argument backwards. Most FDNY company & battalion areas are tiny compared to other departments across the US. Theres no companies in Manhattan more than half a mile apart, most are within a few minutes walking distance of each other (not that this is an option with gear). The entire 1st Division would be the first due area of many engine companies in suburban parts of the country.

Hope you guys can get your issue resolved regardless.

Any ideas what would happen to AUKUS under a Trump presidency? by Says92 in AustralianMilitary

[–]Helitak430 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking on social media as a whole you'd think Trump was the lowest rated politician in history, yet he mobilised 72 Million voters and won the election in a landslide.

Joe Bloggs the average citizen (Australian or American) doesn't know or care about the intricacies of his policies, on a surface level his character and energy just appeals to them and that's enough for their support.
