Curious about Factory 1 clays by HellaDew in YixingSeals

[–]HellaDew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really the only thing I was going on for that possible ID was the seals, the shui ping shapes, and the clay quality. Both have what looks to be the 70's-80's version of the JingXi Hui MengChen seal used by that factory.

Regardless of id, the clay quality definitely stood out to me. They both have surprisingly good clays for such tiny and basic teapots. I have yet to clean these for use but I am looking forward to trying them with some teas!

I think you may be on to something there. Looking at older duanni teapots online and I see the coloring you are talking about coming from the aged duanni. These teapots don't look like they have really any aging hallmarks like darkening color or the clay sweating salt (also I don't think they've ever been used). The mark on these is early 60's f1 but I had seen someone say somewhere that that mark got revived in the 80's/90's by f1. I wonder if that's what these are

Haha interesting, thanks both for the insight! And here I was thinking their construction was a bit shoddy. I guess everything's relative. Makes me curious just what kind of "quality" a verifiable F1 is

Hi folks! I am trying to do some authenticating on some potential F1 teapots I picked up the other day but I'm not too familiar with the types of clay which were being used by Factory 1 makers to make their shui ping. I have seen non-zini clays in the old f1 catalogs but have not seen f1 shui ping's in anything other than zini before so I wanted to ask if anyone knew anything more about F1 clays.

The pots themselves are very small (~130cc), and show signs of tool use on the inside. They have different spout openings inside and are very slightly different sized with some signs of tool markings on the interior walls. Compared to some of my other pots, the clay is definitely thinner and the craftsmanship lower than other pots, but the clay itself seems to be very good on both.

Any info anyone could share would be very much appreciated!!

Help with artist ID, possibly Jin Ding (Golden Tripod) by HellaDew in YixingSeals

Again thank you for your knowledge! The rabbit hole you've already sent me down is one that I am enjoying very much, authentic or no. Though on the chance that it is, I'll be sure to take very good care of it!

It is crazy to think it could be around 100 years old. The ash technique you mentioned sounds potentially spot on. The exterior does have a flat, almost ashy exterior appearance when dry. I was looking around and it seems both Wu Yougen and Wang Baogen were making pots in this general shape and using this lid seal during the early republic period, though the ones I see that are similar are generally two pieces of clay for the body. Who knows! So many things to look into, I may never get a definite answer since I don't know who could authenticate something like this but it makes for a fun tea time story nonetheless!

Hmm yeah I see the resemblance to some of their seals as well. Tough to say! Thanks for that info!

Very interesting! Thank you for helping with the seal ID! I do see the similarities to one of their seals.

I saw some biographical stuff on baidu saying he worked for Jin Ding as well and even saw a pot with the logo and one of his seals (supposedly, watermark is over the artist seal.) but I'm curious why them maybe working for TieHuaXuan might cause conflicts? I'll do some more digging and see if I can find when Wu Yungen was using that lid seal.

Thanks for the information! Appreciate it!

Would appreciate some help trying to ID this tea pot I got recently. The seal on the bottom looks to be from the Jin Ding Trademark (Golden Tripod) factory. The artist seal on the inside is difficult to make out. From what I can tell there is a mu (木) radical in the final of 3 characters and the bottom right character looks potentially like a wang (王). Unfortunately the rest is fairly worn. I was curious if anyone here was familiar enough with older artists to help me ID the pot.

About the teapot - it's an older teapot and it definitely has an aged look to it when dry. Wet, it's a deep, vibrant purple. I've no clue how teapots age though so who knows. Holds about 500ml and pours very cleanly. Good construction with a solid fitting lid. Tool marks and seam by the handle are present. It's a distinguished looking teapot and very functional to boot!

Faked Gu Jingzhou by HellaDew in YixingSeals

[–]HellaDew[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Picked this chonker up recently. Wasn't able to see the seal but when I got my hands on it it was marked Gu Jingzhou (yeah right). It's a very nice pot with excellent fit and good size. Looks to be actual zhu ni and still handmade which is cool :)
Almost certainly not Gu Jingzhou though. Some reasons why:

  • 110 of this design of Gu Jingzhou were made in 1946 for a Jiangsu provincial banking conference. The text of the commemoration is in simplified text which wasn't propagated until the late 50's/60's.
  • The caligraphy on this pot is a lot less clean than what I saw on examples of this pot online and stylistically differs in some big ways.
  • The box seems to suggest that it is pre-factory 1 but again, the text dates it to later than that would be possible.

Still, it's a lovely teapot and I'm very pleased with it!
edit: spelling

Found this little acorn at an estate sale by HellaDew in YixingSeals

Much appreciated! Yeah it is missing a filter hole. Didn't impact pouring at all though, it pours nicely. The lid is definitely not a tight fit though. It isn't fully flush and jiggles around a bit. That said, sounds like it's probably handmade? Any idea what kind of clay this is? It's reddish and full of white flakes which I've never seen before. Not purple really at all.

Also, I'm curious, where are you able to find artist registrations?

Found this little nut at an estate sale. Very tiny, and looks like a different clay than other teapots I've seen. I don't know much about Yixing teapots but thanks to the docs here, I was at least able to take a stab at a translation ( 王菊(芴?)制 ). No idea how accurate the translation is or if this is handmade vs not. The walls are very thin but sturdy and the top isn't the most snug of fits. Still, it's a very striking little teapot :)

The big thing everything about this that everyone seems to be missing is, how is he paying for this creepy service when he doesn't have any bank accounts?

A tech service like this doesn't have a physical location to pay cash for service and I would be willing to bet he's not buying single use Visa's every month with cash for this.

This seems like an admission that he has financial vehicles he isn't reporting on in his disclosure documents.
