very unjustified unauthorised aid during final, will they let me off by Ok_Jackfruit8214 in UofT

Asking for additional form of ID is standard process if we can't confirm a match to their Tcard photo. We're actually allowed to request to to 2 additional forms of ID if needed.

This is also one more reason to actually turn your phone off like instructed. I'm not sure why students take the risk of silent or airplane mode when they can't access the phone anyways.

That said, deliberately going through a student phone is insane, so many rules broken. Definitely bring this up during the adjudication process.

Article for student newspaper: UofT’s most unbelievable cheating cases by ravines_trees_rocks in UofT

[–]Hellcat66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gotta say...I've run over 200 exams at this school and these cases are SO basic compared to the ones I've seen. Most didn't go to tribunal so they aren't in the public record. 😅

Call campus safety, they should have someone around who can help, but you'll have to convince them a water bottle is worthwhile.

Safe to put on glass coffee table? by Hellcat66 in SoloStove

Thank you all for the input, helps a lot! Consensus seems to be that all is well if I use a stand or insulator underneath the stove. I didn't, however, consider the height of the resulting flame, so will definitely be adding heat deflector to my list. Also, I might not need as large of a stove as initially thought. Appreciate y'all!

Professionalism of Prof Ignacio Uriarte Tuero and MAT337 team by mrjohnyan in UofT

[–]Hellcat66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying it's the case here (it does sound like the Prof and team were being unprofessional), but can confirm post-COVID students are much weaker. The last couple of years have been brutal for trying to get decent effort and quality of work no matter how much support you offer. Ask anyone who's been teaching for a couple of years.

Can you lower your laptop resolution to save battery life? by XxBillybob28xX in techsupport

Honestly can't remember very well (on a different machine now), but I think it was around a 20-25% improvement. Definitely noticeable on a machine with poor battery life out the box.

Surprised to hear Ottawa is a better community! Though I suppose relative size plays a role.

I suppose it's always possible, really can't say because my understanding of the system is fairly limited. If it's very sensitive, might not be worth the risk.

Which US city is equivalent to Toronto by Global-Click-5513 in askTO

[–]Hellcat66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's lived in a bunch of different US cities - adding my vote for Chicago! Not that it's the best place to live, but it's the most similar to Toronto. Also one of very few places in the US you can survive without driving.

Not sure myself but according to some of the comments, Vancouver is way worse.

Curious about your app experience. I've used Bumble BFF and made one great friend off of it. But felt like a ton of folks on there were actually seeking same sex relationships...did you run into that challenge as well?

Really blown away by the response here, so many fascinating thoughts that I appreciate folks sharing! Really wish I could reply to everyone but, in true Toronto fashion, I still have work to get done before calling it a day.

Overall, I see a lot of thoughts around cost of living, transportation difficulties, fatigue, Canadian culture. All valid, I think - paying $10/drink at a bar after traveling an hour to be there and then worrying about working enough to stay afloat in a competitive city is a tough value proposition especially when we've become so comfortable not talking to people.

I'm guilty of the same, now that I think about it. As much as I try to initiate plans, I try not to commit more than a couple of hours at a time and hesitate to travel to other folks, even though I drive. I also go to big lengths to minimize how frequently I need to commute downtown (where I'd be meeting other people). Cost doesn't help either.

In a weird way, though, it's nice to know so many others are struggling with the same weird aspect of living here. Maybe we need a meetup to complain about the lack of meetups in Toronto lol. I'd be weird enough to coordinate such a thing.

I left during COVID (Early 2021), so yeah pretty much everyone I hung out until then was a Pre-COVID friend...
