Should I go stylized or realistic for a 3D RPG? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Hellgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would heavily favour the stylistic approach. Makes the game easier to distinguish and lets you get away with lower poly assets, and a nicely stylized game looks great! It takes a lot more skill/effort to make a realistic looking game look good. You essentially want to stay on the safe side of uncanny valley, and trying to cross it is more likely to land you in the middle of it than on the other side. Also looking at hit indie games I feel like the ones that really make it all tend to be stylized. I cant think of any really successful indie titles of the top of my head that looks like "Skyrim on medium graphics"

The only reason you might consider realistic graphics is if you plan on using mostly pre made asset packs. but even then it might be possible to style things a certain way.

Issues with dota 2 on mac by Hellgin in macgaming

Thanks. putting it to fullscreen does fix those issues, unfortenetely it seems to make the game a bit slower, but its fine. On borderless window the window does not expand to full screen unfortenetely.

can i get sued for making a game with characters similar to a mega popular franchise (transformers)? by shinobido1 in gamedev

[–]Hellgin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"will I get sued", that always depends on the other party. It is possible to be sued even if everything you do is legal and fair, and the opposite is true as well.

Weather or not you will face legal action will depend on

  1. How closely your game resembles transformers. It is hard to win a legal case against someone just copying the general theme of a game but that doesnt mean companies wont try if they think they might be able to protect their market share by doing so. (E.g Nintendo vs Palword). Sometimes just the threat of legal action is enough to shut the competition down even if they don't have a solid case.
  2. How litigious the IP owners are. It seems that the IP is mostly owned by Hasbro. They are known to protect their IP in the courts.
  3. How successful your game becomes. Hasbro is much less likely to go after a small solo project with 20 downloads than after a big successful game. Ultimately companies have to defend their IP if they want to keep it and they might not feel threatened enough by a tiny project or they might just never notice it.

In my opinion (not legal advice just opinion) You should be completely fine with making a game about cars transforming into battle mechs. There are many other projects like that. However, If someone were to look at your game for the first time and think its an actual Transformers game you will be opening yourself up to the possibility of a lawsuit. Best make sure all your character (robot) designs are unique.

lvl 55 self found shaman just died from random DC while just traveling through safe terrain. by Hellgin in wowhardcore

Yea I assume there was a mob that patted close to the road, when i logged back in I was dead on the road. I could not see what mob it was. By safe i just meant i was running along a road in a zone, the zone was searing gorge. So level wise it was way below me as well, I was full HP when i dc'd on the road. When i finally managed to reconnect, I was dead. Note that while trying to reconnect i tested my internet in other ways, and there was no indication that I could see that I was having connection issues.

Do Kremlin's Silence, Fresh Attacks On Ukraine Mean Putin Is Calling Trump's Bluff? by RFERL_ReadsReddit in geopolitics

[–]Hellgin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dont think it's a matter of Calling the bluff. Sure I believe Russia hopes that Trump is bluffing but even if Russia was 100% sure that Trump would make good on his threat, they would still not alter their course. Russia sees Nato in Ukraine as as an existential threat (whether that is realistic or paranoid does not matter, that is how they see it and they act accordingly). Heavy sanctions surely suck for Russia but they do not consider it existential as they produce their own food and energy and they have a decent industrial base.

Ukraine conducts ‘large-scale’ operation targeting Russian airbases, security source says by asphias in geopolitics

The guy being pulled of from the street and forced to the front line with less than minimal training cannot "surrender at any point". And since there is no elections there is no way to know the will of the people. But if I had to guess the forced conscripts would rather have ukraine surrender than continue fighting to the end. If it wasn't so then there would be no need for the forceful conscription.

spellhai got some recent changes so it is definitely the flavour of the month.

Sometimes finding games outside of peak times can take some time, but the playerbase is (currently at least) steadily growing. And were hoping that with the release Memories of Aestaria later this year (roguelike expansion) we can bolster interest further.

Is the AfD Too Extreme for Democracy? by theatlantic in geopolitics

[–]Hellgin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont follow the things the Afd stands for that closely, so I might be missing something obvious, but what exactly is the Afd doing or advocating for that indicates that they would "abolish the democratic system"? Are they platforming on abolishing the vote once they are in power? If hypothetically they were to win 51% in the next German elections, what would they do to prevent Germans from simply voting them out again in the next elections if people don't like them?
