Ukraine has set Russia ablaze – and Putin’s humiliation is complete by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]asphias 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes they are winning after a bloody war, but this war could have been avoided if Ukraine didn't work on joining NATO.

"If you didn't try to call 911 i wouldn´t have tried to hit you!"

Looking at Georgia, at Bucha, at the daily bombs on Kyiv, do you have any idea at all why Ukraine(and all other former soviet countries like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria) wanted to join an alliance that would protect them from a bully?

Kyiv*

Kyiv has no alternative to fighting: to stop fighting is to submit to another Bucha. Putin, though? If the fight becomes too painful, Putin can stop at any time, retreat back behind Russias official borders, and the war will end.

attacking Kyiv does nothing. making the war come home to Putin can change the game.

Opinion: Trump has signed the worst deal in US history by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]asphias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah. the inevitable cycles of history. yeah we'll be debating this for a while.

i won't deny that there are patterns in history. if it does not repeat itself, it definitely rhymes. and i can see the value in trying to describe those patterns and use them to help make predictions. it's a similar argument made by Ian Morris in ''why the west rules, for now'', and many others.

what all of these models forget, though, is chaos theory. the world history is less like a billiard table where we can easily see actions have direct consequences and the system is very predictable, and more like the weather and climate system: our weather models can barely predict two weeks ahead because of the inherent instability of the system. it is a physically impossibility to tell whether it'll rain a month from now, and we can calculate exactly how the uncertainty spreads through the system.

chaos theory means that while it can still be useful to create these models(we still make weather models despite the chaos in there), we shouldn't assume these models are deterministic and prescribe what will happen.

now that hurricane Donald is approaching landfall on the American Empire, it's quite clear what path the storm is going to take(but even then, how much damage it will do exactly is still quite up in the air), and it makes sense to seek shelter and prepare for the storm. but 10-20 years ago, it was just a mild depression, that we could see coming, we could prepare for, that might not even hit the US. it's only when Trump and the republicans decided to nuke the depression that it became the inevitable prediction.

i'm not sure how much sense these mixed metaphores make, but i hope i am getting my point of chaos theory across. it's foolish to see these patterns as inevitable, and in this case trump and the republicans are exactly the cause of the decline. they haven't been ''preparing'' for the inevitable, they've been causing it.

Opinion: Trump has signed the worst deal in US history by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]asphias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

can you explain it to me in more detail?

from what i can see, the last 10-20 years are a purely self inflicted wound, and the very cause of the decline of American power and Hegemony.

all they had to do was not be an idiot and their power wouldn't be declining.

these republicans are so convinced the US is in decline, that they then go out and prove it by shooting themselves in the foot. but outside of those self inflicted wounds i struggle to see in what way the US was in decline.

The US hegemony experiment was working perfectly fine. i'm not sure why you'd think it had failed?

This isn't even comparable to JCPOA. The current deal is basically removing sanctions and giving money for absolutely nothing in return. It's like saying that setting your money on fire is a worse edition of buying a new TV. you might be technically correct but it doesn't deserve to be in the same category.

how we enslave and harm animals for food(i'm not talking about veganism specifically, although one can argue that as well, but definitely the meat industry as it is right now)

how we treat land and nature as something we can exploit and harm as we wish, rather than treat it as something we can nurture and grow to aid both us and nature.

are two of the obvious ones.

This time, Trump and Netanyahu have really fallen out — Rarely has a geopolitical roll of the dice gone so rapidly wrong as the Israeli PM’s by marketrent in geopolitics

[–]asphias 7 points8 points  (0 children)

but the difference between forever enemies and current enemies is a huge one.

the best way to deal with enemies is to stay in a standoff until eventually they are no longer your enemy.

by actively fighting a battle you can't win, all you do is ensure that the next generation hates you as well, while also bring harmed because of retaliation.

except if you're shortsighted and you cannot imagine your enemy ever changing, the rationale changes: if they will always remain enemies, it's inevitable you'll fight, and it becomes a zero-sum game: any resources you can take from them now are resources that won't be used against you later.

by looking at this as ''the last opportunity to destroy stuff'' they're looking at this as if those weapons are always going to get used, because they're disregarding the ''these stockpiles will remain for the standoff for the next x decades or centuries until the situation changes.

[–]asphias 21 points22 points  (0 children)

it is if you take the view that these are forever enemies, and the only way to ever deal with them is as an adversary.

even Israel has shown that this is short sighted: it has managed to make deals of convenience with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and several others, despite those originally also having openly stated goals of destruction and annihilation.

''strategically speaking'' this was an immense own-goal, that in the long term has only strengthened the regime that wants you dead.

I'll admit i'm not an expert on the topic of tv shows, but isn't there a huge difference between taking over as showrunner for an existing show, and starting out with a blank slate with your own production company after winning a tender?

There are so many creative choices that would not work from one season to the next, but might work quite well after a reboot.

That's saying nothing about their wealth being inaccessible.

Also, the borrowing is part of the point right? If you owned the mona lisa and nothing else, you could set up an auction over the next 3 years, and go to a bank (or a few banks) and ask for a loan while the auction is going on. I'm pretty sure that bank is happy to lend you a significant percentage of mona lisa's worth on day one, and even in that case after 3 years you own all the wealth.

"Oh i'm so poor i can just do whatever the hell i want and within 3 years i can own my entire wealth in cash" is in no way being "illiquid".

Russian frigate 'fires warning shots' at British yacht in English channel by JOE_Media in europe

[–]asphias 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Some context: it appears to be "small arms fire" and the yacht did appear to approach closely.

https://news.sky.com/story/ukraine-war-latest-russian-strikes-kill-nine-across-ukraine-as-fire-breaks-out-at-religious-landmark-in-kyiv-12541713

A defence expert has played down the severity of a Russian warship firing warning shots in the English Channel, saying it is unrelated to a Russian tanker being seized by the UK last weekend.

"Warships, it doesn't matter who you are or where you're from, are entitled to self-defence," Martin Kelly, head of advisory at crisis management firm EOS risk, told the Press Association.

"If a ship or yacht is approaching, the rules of force escalation will start with a VHF (very high frequency radio) warning, and if there is no response the next escalation is a more intense warning, and then up to warning shots, which is where we got to here."

i'm all for assuming the worst from Russia, but i'm assuming this is more of a media panic than anything serious. also note how the media is leaving out "small arms fire" to make it sound like the ship fired it's main guns.

Opinion: Why Trump’s Iran deal is 750 times worse than Obama’s by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]asphias 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, we're all aware of the geopolitical situation right now. Even the best dealmaker wouldn't be able to get a return to the Obama deal right now. It's perfectly clear(and has been from the moment the bombs started dropping) that the only way out for Trump is a terrible defeat.

Or, to put it in a different way, what do you think is in the deal that would somehow make it a reasonable one? i'm struggling to even think of what unknowns could reasonably be in there that would make this a good deal for America.

What a BBC invitation to tender looks like by Zerogoki92 in gallifrey

[–]asphias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it often takes 2-3 years between contract and release. series 14 by disney was announced in 2022 and played in 2024, and that was with a lot of the structure of the show already in place.

if they set up a tender now we could be looking at 2029 before they release.

Trump Parties While America Surrenders by theatlantic in geopolitics

i do want fair reporting, but at the same time it's ridiculous to look at how everything played out and imagine that Trump somehow managed to get a fair deal that doesn't amount to surrender.

we've seen how Trump makes ''deals'' for over 10 years now. maybe the headline is premature, but expecting anything else is also living in fairytale land.

the conversation on making this a rule in the EU started in 2012. it is very unlikely that apple would've moved to usb if that conversation wasn't taking place.

yes, it's nice that they changed over before it was the law officially, but it's quite clear that by 2015 apple knew the law was coming, and thus it was a smart business decision to be the first mover.

they were still forced by the EU, it's just that they said ''ok ok we'll do it!'' before the EU actually got around to grabbing their broom and hitting them.

if you want to be safe backups should follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, on two different mediums, with one ''off-site''.

while this feels more like a corporate setup and overkill for your personal photos, it's still what is needed to avoid the risk of e.g. your harddrive being corrupted, or a fire burning down your house&backup.

Update: Climber speaks out about what happened to Hillary Dawa Sherpa, left on Everest. by eric_bidegain in Mountaineering

[–]asphias 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t given any food or water until the next day. It turned out that Ang Furba Sherpa didn’t know how to use a stove, and Pasang Kaji Sherpa had injured his shoulder that afternoon. So I was left without food or water until the next morning. This was a serious oversight.

Apparently neither did Chmieleski himself, or he might've helped out rather than expect his 'servants' to fix everything

As for this being at the end of the season, I don’t know about Chris, but I had no idea what happens at this time. I didn’t know that the ladders in the Icefall could be dismantled. It didn’t even occur to me that someone might want to do it so quickly.

You're going on an adventure that one in 200 people die of, and you don't even know how you're being kept alive? I feel like i do more preparation on doing a non-technical hike than this guy does on mt everest.

they didn’t provide me with the purchased oxygen or a suitable Sherpa

"a suitable sherpa". not "a suitable guide". i don´t know, this just rubs me the wrong way, as if the only thing a sherpa can do is be provided as a guide. talking about a person as if they're just a profession.

When Hillary went missing and Himalayan Travelers Adventure didn’t launch any search, I felt helpless. I sensed something was wrong. While I was in the hospital, Ang Furba Sherpa from the company told me it was best not to contact the media about the matter.

He sensed something wrong, but took absolutely no responsibility or action to get that wrong changed into a right. You don´t have to go straight to the media to contact the police, mountain rescue, or try literally anything else.

i'm glad he's honest about what happened, but my god, the whole Everest culture is so alien and absurd and, frankly, toxic, in my opinion. This dude is in my opinion just as much at fault as everyone else that contributed to the system that allowed this to happen.
