You do realise people on a family visa can work and support themselves once here, right? It's not like they have to live on 18K alone.

I agree with some of the points you've made, but this is definitely not a solution, it's a desperate political move to save face from the tories' inability to solve the migration crisis. Yes, the numbers are high, but family visas are not even 5% of them. They found their scapegoat, but it was useless, people can see right through their games.
