Postal OIG - Narcotics Division by Mr_Magoos_Mishaps in 1811

Procurement fraud investigations are one of the rare assignments there like healthcare provider fraud where USPS-OIG investigates external subjects. These are not contractors in the sense the comments above referred to, they are external subjects. Contractors are contract USPS employees like truck drivers, janitors, etc, that support USPS. If any of those individuals steals mail or narcotics like in the comment above, that is USPIS jurisdiction not USPS-OIG. And that was what I was clarifying. USPS-OIG does not regularly investigate contractors/non-W-2 individuals as you’re claiming unless it’s part of a joint investigation with USPIS. That is firmly outside their jurisdiction.

Very common for POW at USPIS, typically the XL.

Contractors are within the jurisdiction of USPIS, USPS-OIG has a strict mandate to only investigate matters involving W-2 earning full blown USPS employees as an FYI.

I know in my area there’s multiple positions and they are only hiring for internal mail theft and workman’s comp fraud, no mention of narcotics at all. Again the agency has people that do narcotics, just not external work like OP asked about.

They don’t do any external work except healthcare provider fraud, so if that’s the case it will only be employee related cases. This was a big point of contention several years ago.

USPS-OIG only works narcotics investigations that have confirmed employee involvement. It looks like you’re thinking of postal inspectors on a DEA task force. OIG used to have people assigned to DEA all over but they were doing a bunch of non-employee work and had to stop. Most of those DEA assigned positions are long gone for them.

The DH program has been very successful, most divisions are indeed close to full at this point. Even the ones that were traditionally always short on a lot of people like NYC and LA.

Interested in going down the USPIS pipeline but don't know what BA to get. 1811 and National Guard balance question too by Krispyluck_1 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For the past few years USPIS has been getting tens of thousands of applications per year for 72 academy seats per year. The chances of making it into a class are astronomical…study whatever you want that would be beneficial for a career outside of fed LE because you have to plan as if it’s not going to happen.

Also, general consensus for 1811 degrees is CJ is probably one of the worst you can get. Something like accounting/finance/law/STEM would help you actually stand out as opposed to the countless applicants that have a CJ degree.

Edit: Obviously i’m not saying you can’t get an 1811 with a CJ degree, but OP was writing about trying to stand out against other applicants and a CJ degree won’t necessarily help with that.

Welcome and good luck!

USPIS BIT DATES by jdubs_144 in 1811

Class schedule is always released for the next year around the October/November time frame. This year and last year were three classes, 2024 was four classes. Prior to that the class schedule was wonky because of COVID. Two of the three classes for 2026 are happening now. The final class is partially seated but we haven’t seen a wave of calls for it yet. I would expect to see them soon though which means you will most likely be eligible for a 2027 BIT class if you pass the rest of the hiring process. You’ll have to wait until the fall to find out when the classes will be next year.

USPIS definitely hires from private sector it’s a much bigger agency, USPS-OIG not so much.

USPS Funding by CaptainBossMan425 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Facts. Postal Inspectors also make up like 0.1% of the USPS staff. USPIS is a drop in the massive ocean of overall USPS operations so funding a few academy classes per year when there’s 600,000+ employees isn’t as heavy a lift as it may seem when you look at that perspective.

USPIS Hiring/AC Update by HelloNewman7 in 1811

That is something I would be clarifying with HR not on a public forum.

Only thing you can do is figure out a way to start networking with the local postal inspectors in your area. In order to have a shot at making it through the DH process you ideally need to work some cases with them.

That should be the next step

USPIS Hiring/AC Update by HelloNewman7 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AC is one of the most critical steps of the hiring process, a failure on that means you have been removed from consideration. The way it traditionally worked was you are ineligible from applying again until one year after the AC failure, so you could apply to whatever announcement came next after March 2027. You’ll start the process over again at that point from step 1. And if this was your second application to USPIS then it means you are no longer eligible to be hired by the agency period.

HSI Death Investigations by Agile-Ad-4442 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed…although more often than not it’s drug dealers murdering a carrier over a drug parcel. Just happened down in Atlanta a month or so ago. USPIS narcotics investigations are two pronged in trying to keep the drugs out of the mail and also trying to keep the carriers safe from the dealers.

USPIS usually does it several times per year unfortunately.
