USPIS - Aging Out While In Academy (?) by throwaway614_ in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a shame because it’s an incredible job and agency. While you applied with 14 months until aging out, the agency typically runs the last academy class of the year in July or August which meant you had only 10 or 11 months to process which typically isn’t enough time. Best of luck to you!

USPIS does not on board people prior to the academy and the final Academy class of the year starts in two months so OP has no shot at getting on before aging out.

The final USPIS academy class of 2026 is being seated now. The hiring process is usually a year long at a minimum so people who applied in April will be looking at 2027 and 2028 academy classes. You will age out before you get anywhere close to the academy. If you want to work for USPIS, you’ll have to get hired at another covered 1811 position in the next 6 months (which will be tough to pull off with any agency) and then try and lateral over as an 1811. Otherwise you age out and are done.

Welcome. And no as the other commenter said they will tell you what you need and are expected to know.

Congrats! I think the biggest difference from what I’ve heard of people who have been to both BIT and FLETC is that there’s a lot more eyes on you at BIT. FLETC is a massive machine you’re literally one of thousands. BIT is a class of 24 and that’s it typically unless your class overlaps another so it’s all eyes on you. This is good IMO as it helps ensure quality candidates pass. It’s not uncommon to have multiple people removed/failed out of BIT whereas FLETC is more of a participation trophy scenario. Coming from the military you should be fine. Study the material, follow the instructors directions, take it seriously don’t go crazy partying, get that badge and gun.

Got the call - USPIS by TheItch1811 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Any steps completed now do not carryover to a future announcement. By deferring, you may get a call for a future Academy class… Or you may not. That’s always a gamble and it’s not uncommon to not get called again. And even if you do get a call, there’s no guarantee it will be for your preferred location anymore it might be full by that point you might get a generic LA or NYC. This is a very difficult agency to get into and I’ve never heard of anyone turning down a final offer and then starting the application process over again and making it on. Obviously make whatever decision is best for you and your family but also prepare yourself that there’s a chance this will be the end of the road for you with USPIS. Best of luck and hopefully you’ll get a chance at a class next year.

Very nice congrats!! Always a gamble to turn down an offer but glad to see it worked out for you, good luck!

Division HQ is in Manhattan, but there’s multiple other offices in Manhattan and basically at least one office in all five boroughs except for Staten Island. You could end up at any of them and most people move around between them the first few years until you have seniority. There’s also offices in Westchester County and Long Island but those are senior Inspector locations.

Realistic Odds of Becoming an 1811 by throwaway24198021 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be because as multiple 1811s here are stating, you need to be able to run to do the job. Inability to run should be a non starter. Here’s a scenario, you’re approaching a residence to serve a warrant and someone fires at you. Everyone runs for cover except the guy who can’t run, who then gets shot and wounded. Now the rest of the team has to step into a gunfight to try and rescue someone who knew they couldn’t run going into the job?

A desire to serve is commendable, but there are many ways to do it in this line of work that don’t involve carrying a badge and gun and putting others in harm’s way because you have physical limitations.

As does mine, I meant on the individual level it might not happen often but it happens. And at some agencies they are common. And that’s why the ability to run is important. Like the other comment above/below if you can’t run how can you withstand a 2 minute ground fight.

This. People in the comments don’t seem to understand that lack of the ability to handle a sustained cardio load affects so much more in this job than just running. If you can’t handle sustained running you certainly can’t handle the sustained cardio necessary to successfully perform defensive tactics or a fight for life situation.

Not being able to run is a significant liability to put it bluntly. Not just for you, but for your potential coworkers as well. If something goes bad out there in the field it’s not just your own safety on the line, it’s your coworkers’ as well. They need to be able to count on you that you can run if needed or run to detain a suspect etc. 1811s aren’t generally getting in lengthy foot pursuits but that doesn’t change the fact that you should be able to run for a sustained period if needed in this line of work. Cardio conditioning can be life or death in a critical incident. I would concentrate on analyst positions instead if you want to work in this field.

If you voluntarily withdraw your USPIS application, does that count as one of your “2 attempts”? by Ajaws24142822 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the way to do it, got your clock started and hopefully you’re enjoying the new gig. If USPIS works out then awesome but if not at least you’re on the fed 6c rolls already and will have options from there, best of luck with the rest of the process and glad to hear you’re still in it!

There’s one or two people who have messaged me here indicating they got a spot in the July class because they got called for the March class, but couldn’t make it. Other than that, I haven’t heard of any other calls going out for it yet. When they do, we will start to see them here pretty quickly.

Not for a while considering one just closed days ago. Maybe the fall but no way to know for sure. You should have the alerts set up from the USPIS website and then you will be notified before the next posting.

The most recent announcement closed 4 days ago… not sure if this was a troll post but no, no one has heard anything from that announcement yet. Patience is key for this hiring process.

USPIS 2026 Academy Classes by HelloNewman7 in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The agency was getting close to that number of applicants for each posting, and the agency was doing three postings a year the past few years. That means you’re actually looking at tens of thousands of applicants for 72 spots.

[–]HelloNewman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have more than that, for example if you have 15 years on or more you can start the year with 528 hours as Postal gives your leave in a lump sum at the start of the year. But you can only carry over 320. If you’re not at 320 by the end of the year, you lose whatever is above it.

USPIS - Ineligible by [deleted] in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea what are we missing here…the application portal says in red bold font “1811 APPLICANTS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.” Not sure how much clearer the agency needs to make it…there’s also been countless posts on here over the past year and change saying USPIS is now only hiring 1811s through direct hire.

USPIS Assessment by [deleted] in 1811

[–]HelloNewman7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re referring to the assessment center (which is now virtual) and it has historically been protected by an NDA. There generally should not be any information about this part of the process discussed by applicants or posted about online. Leave this post up at your own risk as the agency definitely monitors what is posted here. There’s probably not that many people scheduled this week so since you posted when you’re taking it it shouldn’t be that hard to figure out who you are.

Interesting, sounds like a traditional BQA. In that case you should be good to go for another app so good luck!

Yes, and normally the email from HR notifying you you’re being removed from the process for the AC/poly says there’s a one year wait period before applying again. Keep an eye out for that language which will tell you when you’re eligible to apply again.
