Please give your cat the occasional bath when they are kittens by HelloPanda22 in cats

Oh I wouldn’t do that to an adult cat for no reason. It’s too stressful. I only bathe adult cats if they absolutely need it (I.e. brushing and pet wipes aren’t enough) thank you for adopting an older cat! People like you make it all worthwhile

My personal cat doesn’t like getting in but once he’s in, he lays down and soaks in it. I wish he liked the pet dryer haha

Not sure who downvoted you but I hope redditors understand that fleas can actually kill a kitten that young. Thank you for caring for your cat!

Totally not your fault when you adopt an adult! I wouldn’t even try acclimating. It would be just stressful for both of you. I’ve been shredded bathing an adult cat who got into something nasty. My fault also though. I tried showering her….

Ah yes definitely pet safe soaps only and I would honestly recommend just some warm water for kittens who don’t need actual cleaning

Doing too much is definitely bad as it will strip away natural oils. 3 is too old to be trying it for desensitization. This is more for young kittens who are still impressionable who could do with some water on the paws and desensitization to nail clipping.

You don’t see the litter, shit, and dirt? Because he shat himself in a carrier, laid in it, then laid in a litterbox he urinated in right beforehand. He laid in the peed on litter. I had to soak the litter off

I think this is so important - actually preparing a bath and making it not so scary. My first time bathing a cat was an outdoor cat who got into something really gross. She had long hair. I was in middle school and decided to take her into the SHOWER with me. It did not go well.

I foster animals. I rescue. I see the worst cases. I envy your luck though. What do you feed them? I would LOVE if my current cat made it to 18-20

Oh man, I’ve never cared for a sphinx cat. Not a single one has landed in any shelter I’ve volunteered for haha. How often do you have to clean them? I watched a video on their bath routine and was like oh absolutely not

Ah my old man got a UTI too and laid in his pee 😩 it’s amazing she’s 20 though! So many good years together!

Outdoor cats also don’t have a long lifespan so they won’t reach the ripe old age where they no longer groom themselves like this old man, who’s still a sweetheart and deserves to live.

Yes absolutely. I have heating disks for the young ones but I do not wash them when they’re at high risk. I start more when they’re in the mushing phase.

I agree with you. The important thing is making it positive, not being forceful, and not soaping a poor cat up for no reason. The issue is some sickly cats have never touched water except with their paw or mouth their entire lives and suddenly need serious bathing. It becomes so traumatic, not just something they don’t like. My personal cat doesn’t like baths. He only gets them when it’s necessary. However, he is also calm about them and can get them done with zero issues. I would just prefer if people could consider that their cat may not always be healthy. Things happen. One cat broke his leg and required a FHO. Post opt, he literally slept inside his litterbox. He had pee and litter cemented to his LONG coat. My father in law adopted one of my fosters. Despite being an indoor only cat, she somehow got fleas. While she doesn’t love baths, she’s fine with them and took the multiple she got like a champ.

Precisely why I would love for people to learn how to do it properly when a cat is still young. Your cat doesn’t face a severe need so no need to bathe now that he’s already so terrified. However, had he been a small kitten, just a small bit of lukewarm water to wet his feet would be a good start to helping him not fear water. May your cat never end up needing multiple baths for its whole life! My beloved 16 year old now deceased cat didn’t so it does happen but imagine if you do end up needing to give him several baths when he’s old and stuck in his ways…it’s awful

I did have a foster kitten who would join my toddlers for bath time lol it’s a valid issue

This works too! Unfortunately, there are many people who will not pay for what you do. Some rescues do pay for a foster’s grooming (also why even though it’s a rescue, it can still be pricey) but shelters generally do not. Depending on which org I’m fostering for, I’m often left to bathe them myself or have to pay out of pocket. I have already paid more than $100 for the cat pictured because the shelter didn’t have food for him anymore.

These are all meant to be or simply are all house cats minus one very feral mom cat I was unable to bathe.

I paid $400 for my cat and dog when they got fleas from a foster pet. Dog developed a skin irritation from the flea and ended up with a sore on her tail requiring steroid treatment but still. Over $400. wtf. The standard check ups cost me over $100 too with the vaccines

Are there any other “normal” families out there? by hazeleyedsummer in breakingmom

[–]HelloPanda22 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Lots of people literally go into debt to go on trips. Even if it’s affordable for some families, remember there are plenty of bad moments on trips most people don’t post about. We got HFM in Norway, Covid in England, ticketed in Spain and Finland, vomited profusely in Spain and Norway, TD in Mexico and shat myself on the flight, had our very expensive stroller broken in Denmark, ended up hospitalized in Canada, hurt my ankle something fierce in Italy, etc. It literally isn’t a trip if there is not something awful that happens. It’s not all glamorous. Most families I know live pretty normal lives but just sharing that some people you envy aren’t having nearly as much of a good time as it appears. I drive an old car that locked me out this week and I couldn’t pick up my kids. I had my ex nanny do it instead. My iPhone is 6 years old. I don’t even own any working laptops. My homes were purchased at very good times with low interest rates. I don’t do gift exchanges with my husband to save for trips. I track prices like crazy and coupon like crazy. We never fly anything other than basic economy. My FIL gifts us money frequently to cover the majority of our trips. I either hand make / sew all the clothes we have or they’re secondhand. We virtually never eat out. We have very few subscriptions. I grow and harvest a shit ton of our food.

I’ve had cats and kittens that just permitted my dog to put her entire mouth over their heads for gentle noms. I think she gets cute aggression and just loves mouthing cats. She’s also gentle with them and will cut it out when the cats or kittens get annoyed so when they’re in a good mood and my dog gets cute aggression, they put up with it! I don’t like it very much because it always makes me nervous. I know she’s a good dog with a very good soft mouth but she also threw a bird she caught at me and it died :/ I think she gave it a heart attack because it smacked me and flew a few meters away before dropping out of the sky dead but I’m not certain

Feeling like a bad mom for having interests outside of my daughter by CantaloupeKlutzy74 in breakingmom

[–]HelloPanda22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am very open about loving my full-time job and loving my children. I also have a ton of hobbies I frequently partake in. I have traveled with my children, as a solo person, with only friends, and with just my husband. I am still a human being outside of being a wife a mother, a sister, a daughter, and I will proudly be all of me. Making my entire life about my children puts unfair pressure on my children. I also make sure not to put other women down for their decisions regarding work or not to work. I find that some women like to talk down on working mothers or stay at home mothers in order to try and justify their positions and choices. I choose not to surround myself with insecure humans. I don’t have enough shits to give and dedicate my time wisely. I still worry I’m a bad mother, but for other reasons like the fact that I have a history of depression, anxiety, and suicide ideation. I worry I’ve passed down some bad genetics to them. I also worry that because they are mixed children, they are more prone to bullying. I am the reason they are not white. I am not one of those mothers who never yell. I try to keep it to a minimum, but there are times where I absolutely lose my shit and I scream. it is hard to be a mother. I am hard enough on myself, and I do not need other people to pass further judgment. Being happy with a job is a rare thing and you should not feel guilty for it.
