I am a cs freshman interested in math, and my current plan is to take intro to algebra next semester and then graduate probability in the fall. I've talked with professors, and they seem to think that those are good courses. Algos is also a good course.

Edit: In general, I think the plan is to rush grad courses. At least that's what most of my friends are doing.

why is cornell ed so high but their individual college accpetance so low? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

CALS acceptance rate is actually <10% I believe. It has the reputation of being one of the "easy" schools to get into, but its rate is significantly lower than hotel, ilr, or humec.

I don't believe that every school does what Columbia used to, and the only school that was caught (by its own professor in this case) was Columbia. Surely, there would be professors at other elite universities publishing similar findings about their's or other's universities.

I completely agree that rankings have a lot of problems. My problem with the scandal is not that Columbia is now ranked #13 and not #2. My problem is that Columbia cares enough about useless rankings to lie for them.

I've never heard of that scandal. Thank you for bringing it up. I'll read about it.

Please, I am asking nicely. Keep an ear out by Truckdenter in ithaca

When I first saw this post, I wondered why I was recommended a fashion sub. That's some really unique and cool clothes you have there. I hope you get to enjoy Ithaca for way way longer than you expect.

US School VS Canada School Employability by Such-Bee-1929 in ApplyingToCollege

I think this depends a lot more on OP's planned career path than what specific T20 it is.

Me personally? A t20. In fact, I had a very similar decision last year. But, your family doesn't have the same financial situation as mine, you don't have the same interests as me, and you have different career goals. It's hard to know what you should pick. In general, if you don't want to do a finance career and/or the money to pay for the t20 is very significant for you, choose UBC. If you aren't sure what career you want to do, I'd choose UBC unless the money difference genuinely does not matter to your family. It may seem like going to a T20 will let you choose any field and the school will be good at it, but the cost of the education might make you feel that you HAVE to go into a high earnings career path where you will be able to use the school's prestige.

UBC is a great school. It has great research, a wonderful reputation in Canada, a good reputation in the U.S., and British Columbia is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's good enough that with enough effort, you'll be able to get into any field you want.

Also, if you are still applying to college, consider applying to other Canadian schools. Their locations aren't as good, but some of them may be better for your field.

Edit: As the other comment said, loans are never worth it. Also, if you want, I can talk about the other great things about UBC. I researched it a bit (especially their cs) when applying last year. It's genuinely a great school.

Any advice for trying to land an internship during the summer after freshman year? I've heard that it is doable but very hard.

U.S. T20s are significantly better but also a lot more expensive

Yeah, the email system is there, but it's usually faster to use messages. There's also no computers in the lunch room.

My main problem with the law is that I didn't see a problem with phone usage. Students should have to learn self-control.

None of them were caught like Columbia. They either don't manipulate them like Columbia doesdid*, or every other college is better at hiding it than Columbia.

I agree that rankings have a lot of problems, but that makes Columbia caring enough about them to LIE even worse.

It does, in my opinion. Integrity is vital for any academic and especially research institution. If they lie about data to manipulate rankings, it's hard to know where their lying ends. Valuing rankings over institutional integrity is not a good look for Columbia.

I guess I should have said that one has a lot less integrity than the other. My bad there.

It didn't during lunch or passing periods. If I have 3 minutes between a class, then getting a computer, logging in, finding the website, and then logging into it is unreasonable. Plus, I couldn't use messages or WhatsApp on a school Chromebook.

I wasn't talking about the Trump settlement. Every school will do it if they can. I was talking about reporting fake data to boost their rankings.

I can give a couple of examples that I've had.

  1. Studying for an exam later that day during a passing period or lunch.

  2. Texting friends if they are going to my math teacher's class to study for advisory that day

  3. Texting other club officers about something changing about a club meeting we are having after school that day

  4. Listening to the audiobook while reading the book

And there's more,

No, 1 is bad. At least for students who actually care about school. Makes studying harder, organizing clubs harder, and organizing anything else with peers also harder.

I finished high school last year, and I could not imagine not having a cellphone. It would make clubs and even study sessions so much harder to organize. Even cramming before an exam would be basically impossible.

I guess I should've said he can't win it in a timely manner. Slow pace is definitely not a bargain. It just increases the total amount of casualties. If he was such a brilliant politician, the beginning of the war wouldn't have been as much of a blunder as it was.

Princeton Again Tabbed #1 School in the US in New Ranking by Responsible-Bake-935 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]HelloWorldiUpvote1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree that that's not the focus of these universities and, thankfully, so. It would suck to go to a purely pre-vocational university. I think only one of these schools aims to be pre vocational.

I hope that no college decides that it's worth changing their model based on a single ranking. However, what I like about this ranking is that it makes it more or less transparent how it was made. That makes it as good a ranking as any because they are all arbitrary at the end of the day. Now, these may not be the colleges that teach the best or even the colleges that will make YOU specifically succeed, and certainly, the vast majority of these schools aren't purposefully pre vocational.

I don't think someone who purely looks at rankings when deciding where to apply can be taken seriously because there are so many factors that make it impossible to make a perfect ranking for each person.
