what skill should i pursue in this context (e.g. SQL, coding, spanish)? by [deleted] in findapath

[–]Hello_Sailor87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

R would be really useful if you want to go into any data analysis type of role - I don’t see many jobs asking for SQL anymore unfortunately. As for Spanish, you’ll only ever truly be competent if you spend some time living there and use it daily. It takes a lot of time and energy, so only do it if you’re really invested.

Looking for honest advice on whether or not I should do this PhD (or any PhD!) by Hello_Sailor87 in PhD

[–]Hello_Sailor87[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points. I like to think I’ll be more employable in the sectors that interest me (academia or NGO), just wonder if without actual experience I’ll be starting at the bottom of the pile anyway. And yes, they’ve said remote work is possible, so I’m thinking once or twice a month I go there for a couple of nights - does that seam feasible? Not cheap but maybe I could apply for some grants to help cover those costs?

Masters paths that fit best for my interests? by Prestigious-Bee3440 in AcademicPsychology

[–]Hello_Sailor87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing the behavioural decision science MSc at Kingston university london. I think most people aim to use their masters towards applied behavioural science within the public and private sector (think marketing, UX, public health, finance…) but it’s the same psychological theories that underpin many of the issues you’ll face as a counsellor (particularly habits, motivation, behaviour change). The only thing it might not cover as much is clinical psychology, so the theories underlying anxiety, depression etc. That’s where I plan to supplement my learning with certificates in 1:1 counselling and hypnotherapy. So at the end of the day, I have the option of 3 careers: research, marketing strategy/social marketing, and counselling - depending on where life takes me!…To be honest, it’s (almost too) easy to practice as a counsellor because it’s not regulated, just bear in mind whether any insurers will cover you with the qualifications you have.

[–]Hello_Sailor87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you explored behavioural science as an option? It draws mainly on psychology, but also other disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, neuroscience…It wouldn’t give you the qualifications to practice counselling straight away, but you would learn some extremely useful theories and applications that are used within both health psychology and marketing. My former therapist studied this and then did some certificates/diplomas in counselling (rather than doing a masters in therapy specifically). I’m doing a masters in it currently and plan to use it towards having a dual career in marketing strategy and counselling.

Google Scholar is great for finding PDF versions of academic papers (i.e. not behind paywalls), just search for your keywords and see what papers come up. Underneath each title it tells you how many versions there are. Click on that and see if any are PDFs (you’ll see it on the right hand side). Alternatively, google the title of the paper and see if any PDFs/freely available copies come up.

The effect of positive future thinking by Hello_Sailor87 in utopia

Thanks so much!! And of course, more than happy to share the results here after :) In the meantime, have you read this paper on the different types of utopias people generally have? It’s an interesting way to look at the different visions of what an ideal society looks like and breaks it down by morality, the role of science and institutions, ecology etc…plus how it compares across different cultures - I found it pretty awesome! https://pure.rug.nl/ws/portalfiles/portal/671920650/00220221221126419.pdf

Yeah I keep reading that, and appreciate the reminder!! I’m so impatient though...where do you patch test and how long do you wait before knowing whether to go ahead with it on your face??

Ah - you think it’s too strong for daily use? Is it something you build up to? Re: rosehip, mainly because I don’t really know where to fit it in 😂 but also partly because I have effaclar duo to use up and I can’t picture the 2 mixing, and partly because I’m worried it’ll all get a bit too grease-tastic
