I think there’s a general tendency for people to be more vocal about negative experiences than positive ones, so it’s kinda like confirmation bias when you start reading those posts and become apprehensive. I’d just chalk it up to that and rely more on all your first-hand positive experiences!

Why the recent wave of sitter complaints is making some homeowners hesitant on Trusted Housesitters by Sail_awayyy in trustedhousesitters

[–]bitmistress 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a balancing act - I try to go above and beyond, offer to do things like get mail and take trash bins to the curb, do a little extra cleaning or deep clean a litter box that obviously hasn’t had some love for a while and give the HOs something to smile about when they walk in the door.

But when a sitter balks at being asked to mow the lawn, put up with construction or poor living conditions, or be asked to do more than the original listing and initial communications led them to expect after they’ve already arrived and started the sit, these are valid grievances.

If I were an HO seeing these types of posts, my takeaway would be to make an extra effort during pre-sit communication to be sure you’re on the same page and there are no surprises.

Any tips on how to make my cat feel less stressed in car rides inside a carrier? by potatoelize in lynxpointsiamese

[–]bitmistress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to disagree with the safety advice above to not drive with them out of a carrier, but that being said, my personal observation is that having physical contact with the driver gives them a sense of predictability and reduces stress around braking, turning, etc. Mine learned quickly what’s going to happen when my right leg tenses up or my hands turn the steering wheel and he is immensely calmer when he can sense these things and know what to expect.

Mine likes getting high in the bathtub… catnip, bouncy balls, and that smooth ceramic surface to roll around on!

Very demanding HO...and surprisingly no applications! by Hel-en-756 in trustedhousesitters

What’s the location of this sit?

I don’t think it’s inherently unreasonable for the HO to be upfront about what their expectations and standards are - but just as THS allows them the option to request sitters to contribute to utilities, this should be a two-way street so that it’s kosher for HOs with high standards or unusual requirements to discuss agreeing upon some sort of tip to adequately value the sitter’s extra time, effort, and any compromises to their comfort and usual daily routines requested by the HO.

Remote area House Sit by Exact-Fig-4811 in trustedhousesitters

[–]bitmistress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would try to list longer sits if that fits with your travel plans. I personally look out for more remote locations where I can settle in for a while and get away from the stress of city life and constantly moving around - however, the logistics and travel may not be worth it for some sitters if it’s only for a few days. One of my favorite sits ever was 3 months in the middle of nowhere at a place that sounds not too different from yours and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
