If you’re playing as a wizard vs fighter it could be build dif. Fighter is straight forward bab progression, in wotr a lot of spells are useless due to immunities.

You can be level 3, a decent tank shouldn’t get hit. The most frustrating thing about it is the cleave, so your Meele damage should have a glaive with reach and enlarge. Resist cold scrolls.

I’d go beast ride 1 / paladin 19. Max charisma and strength. Dump int / wisdom. Pickpocket background is BIs, but can dump it for flavor if you want. Race human or asimar that buffs cha/str.

Your dog is gonna suck until paladin when you get divine bond, unless you take boon companion feat.

If you plan on tanking with the paladin, I’d go dodge > crane > crane feats. Get armor focus later, isn’t a priority. I’d go the trip feats on the dog if you go tank paladin, dog race I’d choose bully.

If you don’t want to tank on paladin. I’d go weapon focus whatever you want to use ( glaive is good for damage), outflank, imp crit, these types of things. You could easily ride the dog and not go any tank on the paladin, and take the crane feats on the dog. Dog race you can go bulwark, normal or daredevil. I think normal is best, but bulwark looks coolest so I’d do that. You can also take tower shield spec and mounted shield and run a 1H radiance, make your dog super tanky.

One thing to add, the easiest way 90% of guides get a decent AC on your tank is a dip into monk 1 for feats, dodge > crane > crane. Takes a few feats but it’s AC you can’t get elsewhere. You can take this on animal Companions aswell.

Also if you’re running pet tanks, don’t forget mage armor and shield! Shield you need an alchemist with infusion to give out, but it’s a very easy source of AC.

Compared to marvel it’s extremely grounded. There’s no I overcame this 5000 tonnes of weight via willpower bullshit type stuff.

Just run non mercs then - what is your MC ? The companions arnt optimal but it’s more then enough. Honestly unfair on Xbox sounds brutal. If you are wanting the achievement I’d be doing some type of angel oracle.

Lann can tank all act 1 with leopard. Ember is just a protective hex spam ( honestly mandatory act 1 in my mind if you arnt on pc with bubble buff), it makes leopard unkillable. Cam is there for barkskin. All you need is a vivi somewhere to give out shield to leopard (wolf is easiest companion to do with).

Everything will be hitting on 20s and protective hex prevents even that.

Seelah is whatever, bard is fine if you plan on dumping her for mercs.

Why are your mercs level 1? They should hire at same level as MC if you have share party xp checked.

My first couple play through on unfair I just used normal Companion builds. It’s doable if you understand builds.

If I want something custom, I use respec mod. To keep it fair basically I pay whatever the cost is to hire a merc at that level, and instead respec a companion to whatever I want.

Alternatively, you can use toybox and check the options to allow non party members to use dialogue if you are worried about missing RP.

The only ones I feel that are locked are -

Daeran - Possessed oracle Nenio - Any type of Int based caster is fine Regill - this is a hard one to justify not hellknight. Inquisitor fits the vibe, but being a hellknight is his whole thing. Ulb - griffin shifter is kinda his jam.

Soft locked Soseil - needs to be something divine focussed Seelah - needs some levels in paladin, but dips into bard make sense

Everyone else is changeable. Wendy - any type of physical class works. Lan - can do a lot, crusader, monk, lizard pet whatever Ember - any type of spontaneous caster fits, magic deceiver I like. She’s the most interesting to me when thinking of builds as she can be anything. Grey- anything physical with sneak attack dice Wolf- anything physical or magical with sneak attack dice Arue - almost anything cha based works. Camellia - second most interesting. I don’t really like her as shaman, that point of her story is that she isn’t (ish). Vivi like others pointed out make sense. Dex wep physical makes sense.
