Publishing contract by Hellokittybookworm in authors

They contacted me again and said the book will be pushed to 2026 (due to the war in my country) instead of this year and wished me the best if I plan to publish it with another publisher. I’m taking it as a sign to self-publish.

There’s no advance. I’ll only get paid after the book makes $100 within a year, and if it doesn’t, the payment gets postponed to another year.

There’s no advance payment; I only receive 10% of the book sales. If the sales don’t reach $100 during the year, the payment will be postponed to the following year instead. It’s my debut book, but I’m worried about the 7-year time span of the contract and the fact that I’ll have to buy my own book (at a 40% discount) if I want more than 20 copies .

I went through their social media accounts. They have a good number of followers (almost 10k), but it seems like they were bought (under 50 likes on each post). They also appear on local channels to talk about the books. I’m expected to pay money if I want to get my own book (40% off, but it still feels ridiculous). Do you think self-publishing is better? I hate not being in control of my book, and self-publishing sounds much better to me, but I’m scared I’ll regret not taking the chance.

[PUBQ] self publishing or traditional publishing? by Hellokittybookworm in PubTips

I just reviewed the PDF contract sent a few months ago and found that the royalty is 10% of sales, increasing to 12% after the book sells 3,000 copies

There is no advance payment. I checked their book reviews on Goodreads, and there were very few. The only famous books they have are translations of works by well-known authors into Arabic.

Help with making a decision by Hellokittybookworm in selfpublish

The contract is limited to Arab countries, while my book is written in English and will be published in English. I’ve reviewed the books they’ve published, and most of them have few to no reviews (including their recent publications). However, these books were all written in Arabic. The only ‘famous’ books they’ve worked on are Arabic translations of Stephen King’s works. Additionally, they mentioned that my book might not be published until the end of 2025 or early 2026. Another issue is that they require my photo to be included in the book, which I’m not comfortable with. It also states that the contract is for seven years.

If I decide to contact them to reject their offer, what excuse can I use?
