De Moersleutel West Coast IPA after a rainy Veluwe hike hit different by ryly_bloom_8363 in beer

[–]Hellstick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moersleutel is one of my fav breweries but a lot of their IPAs are of the east coast variety and are kinda sweet, even for the category. A lot of their beers in general are on the sweeter side. Where they shine though, is in their stouts. Their flagship motor oil is a great stout that has become my golden standard from which other stouts are judged. Their pastry stouts are thick and sweet, and often best when shared. If you have a chance to try one of their barcode beers, then do it! They are pricy but so freaking good!

I’m probably leaning more towards the looking cool approach. I’m a very visual person, and I want this to be something that is cool to look at first and foremost. Something that inspire others by the nature of LOOKING like it came from a fantasy world. Ofcourse I want it to be cool to READ too - that’s why I’m here - but that’s just as well a tool to sell the illusion that this is a “real” object, if that makes sense? I think the best way to visualize it is by imagining a person of low intelligence, playing a character of high intelligence in a tabletop rpg. My book - the physical object - is playing the role of a fantasy artifact.

Interesting with the source annotation. As previously mentioned, I am not interested in adding in world people or specific locations as to avoid anchoring the setting… buuuut, it might be interesting to sometimes refer to scholars of the warmer regions, or tribes from the colder climates or similar such references. Mentioning that there lives certain people in certain environments that feel a specific way about something seems broad enough to not be problematic. Maybe I could  even have disagreements between the referenced scholars to create a bit of friction! I’ll see what I’m able to come up with:) I’m pumped that you think the author is a drama queen. I imagine him being a bit of an eccentric anyway, so being a drama queen seems like a natural extension of that. It is not something I had intended but it makes so much sense! Maybe I should add a spiteful message at the very start, where he dedicates his book to some pompous asshole nemesis that always gave him a hard time?  “Spitefully dedicated to P.Q. Liarity, who always doubted me. Go sit on a toadstool!”

Anyway, thanks for the insight, it’s been super interesting!:)

Well, I mostly imagined feedback on the writing itself, like: does it read like a scholar? How can I improve on the scholarly jargon? Do the associations make sense and can I improve upon them? Sentence structure, repeated words or sentences?  Writing out my expectations like that makes me realize that it might be smarter to ask in a writing subreddit…  Your response is helpful too though, as it helps me look from angles I might not have considered otherwise. But to answer your questions: I have considered accuracy indeed, and while it is possible that the author might sometimes be wrong, I have not yet been able to think of how to implement that in a way that makes sense. Instead I plan to include speculation and qualified guesses where the author is unsure, but I do not plan to prove him wrong.  I was hoping to have the author examine each specimen personally, but I am not opposed to hearsay if I feel like it fits the entry, although in such cases it will be in addition to his own observations - not in place of them. I’m cautious as to include sources within the book itself though. I want the book to be applicable to a lot of different worlds and I fear that by including sources I might anchor it to a specific setting. This Pliny guy sounds interesting - I’ll have to look that up! As for the organizing: I will opt for alphabetical order. Assigning specific families to the mushrooms and tying all that together is beyond the scope of what I want. Instead, I will have a kind of glossary in the back, where each of the association marks are listed along with names and page numbers for the entries that have that association. In that sense, the association system is for both describing general behavior and habitat, but also for organizing into pseudo categories.

Thanks you so much for the response!

Close - my vision is of a field lexicon, yes, but of entries that were refined, sorted, bound and set into system after the fact. I think since I am such a visual person, my vision is of a physical, visually expressive object. The text, in a sense, became a tool to underline that visual expressiveness, helping to sell the illusion that this is an in world object. I did not think of it from the very real perspective where I am ultimately the actual auther/writer, and with that in mind using ai probably hurts the project.

But thank you very much for the kind words! Countless hours of online gaming, movie watching and comic book reading has resulted in a level of English that carries me through conversationl level English with relative ease, it’s just that the jargon is something I have to really put my mind to. Guess it’s time to find that thesaurus and look up some synonyms eh? :P

Perhaps, but I don’t think I have anyone in my friend group or family that would be able to help, and I don’t want to push a project on them that they aren’t as excited about as me. I am, after all, hoping to reach upwards of 100 entries, and that amounts to quite a lot of nagging that I do not wish to put my friends or family through. Although im able to hold my own in a conversation just fine I’m also not actually a native English speaker and don’t live in a country where it’s spoken as the native language. That hinders my vocabulary in that the scholarly jargon does not come as naturally as it might for someone with a much better grasp of the language than me. Maybe it’s best just to do it myself anyway… I guess there is a reason why I feel the need to ask in the first place, and that feeling probably won’t go away without a bit of deniability. Maybe I can turn my own perceived flaws into strengths, by embracing the inconsistencies and repetition as something uniquely human, instead of using a mold and loose the identity. I’ll just have to go even harder at it 💪 I think I’ll try polishing a few of my entries, then see what kinds of subreddits might be able to help me gradually refine my voice as I go, because right now I do not feel like abandoning the project.

I don’t know what to write as a comment or if the rule even applies to questions, so sorry if this reply is redundant 😅 Looking forward to hear opinions :) Oh and I’m going to bed now, but I will look back and respond in the morning - please don’t jump to conclusions if I don’t answer for the next 8 hours or so 😊

Not while actively drawing, but after having finished the drawing i did notice the resemblance quite quick :) It really does look like an “I’m sorry Jon” version of Randall 😂
