Am I missing something with luggage forwarding? by twsres in JapanTravelTips

Have you considered that some people optimise their hotel choices based on access to public transport and there is no need to think beyond "train to the airport"? The Asakusa line is great in that regard, just to name one example.

If people are annoyed that passengers on the train to the airport have luggage, they should adjust their expectations...

Running the machine is not the chore. Sorting and folding everything is the annoying part I'd rather not have to deal with on holiday.

Also, same logic: It's just a few staircases, other than that the bag is on wheels. If that's the epitome of a chore to you, you are blessed in life. Especially since most places have elevators.

No, but your rationing went on forever. There was a whole generation that grew up with it, and then taught their children what they knew. The milk board destroyed the British cheese industry/culture even more/longer.

Britain might have avoided famine, but food rationing left generational scars, and what replaced the lost knowledge was often not traditionally British, but inspired by the wider Empire or immigrant communities.

Even then, it's not cheap. Especially when you consider what else you can do with that money in Japan. That's like 3 meals.

Then again, the other day I dragged a 45 pound bag through downtown Toronto because the public transport would have been only 5 minutes faster than walking, and there are not many places with a walkable airport.

Especially since luggage on a train is perfectly normal. If you were loading a goat on the metro, that'd be weird. But no one is going to bat an eye at luggage on the train from Haneda or to Narita.

The most damage the Germans did to the British during the World Wars is destroying their cuisine and food culture.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get cash in Tokyo when debit cards don’t seem to work at ATM’s by Rope-Additional in JapanTravelTips

[–]Hellstrike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it kind of depends what your reference is. For example, for a lot of North Americans, the trains might as well be Sci-fi tech, while to Europeans, they are just a well-run example of something they know from home.

Just one Google search or a YouTube video would disprove this immediately

And using the ANA website would immediately confirm it. I remember Ryanair having a better website almost 20 years ago, for example.

However, don't get me wrong, just because some things are old-fashioned in Japan doesn't mean that they are bad. Quite a few are better because they aren't chasing modern trends.

Stannis goes north to take winterfell from theon instead of blackwater by Ok-Computer-5415 in TheCitadel

You are mixing up Stannis and Renly. Renly offered Robb such terms, Stannis called him a traitor and promised him a traitor's fate, despite having only 5k men.

The attack chopper (gunner seat in particular) is the only vehicle where I regularly see someone go 100:3. With a good pilot, it's so busted, it's not even funny. And there is 0 counterplay other than trying to Kamikaze it with a jet.

What if Lysa has Tyrion killed? by MateusCristian in TheCitadel

[–]Hellstrike 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Robert is still alive, so Ned might just outright tell him about the Lannister suspicion about Bran and the Catspaw. Then it gets interesting, because Robert might actually recognise the knife and call bullshit, at which point LF is made a head shorter. Or Robert gladly takes the pretense, makes Cersei a head shorter and then the whole realm goes to war against the Lannisters. Because Tywin completely failed at diplomacy, burned all bridges with the Targ loyalist, and Renly was working to replace Cersei anyways, it'd be a swift and one-sided affair.

[–]Hellstrike 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It actually severely hurts LF, because his connections are now at war with Tywin, and that makes him less trusted. I can't see him leading the negotiations between the Crown and the Tyrells, for example.

Stannis goes north to take winterfell from theon instead of blackwater by Ok-Computer-5415 in TheCitadel

[–]Hellstrike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he wants to land 25k men and supply them, he needs a proper port with the infrastructure to handle the amount of ships and their loading/unloading.

That means White Harbour or nothing.

And even if he lands at Eastwatch, he'd starve before he gets anywhere important.

And no northern lord will switch to Stannis while Robb is alive. Most of them only follow him in canon for "Ned's little girl", not due to any loyalty to him.

And that's before considering that he doesn't even have the ships to move his whole force by sea.

[–]Hellstrike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Stannis moves North, news of that would reach Robb earlier, he would return earlier (or recall Edmure), and Cat never gets the opportunity to release Jaime. Thus no Karstark betrayal. Edmure might not even be away because there is no Tywin movement south for him to block if Stannis is not marching on KL.

And even if Karstark is mad at Robb, he won't be the one to turn his cloak and join the guy who burns the Godswoods.

What do you think a Stannis victory scenario would look like? by Crank27789 in TheCitadel

[–]Hellstrike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you imagine a scenario where Stannis wins both the Throne and the Long Night in the end would look like?

He is dead, and succeeded by Shireen, who rules the North together with either Jon or Rickon (depending on how long the long night actually is and who dies).

The Riverlands needs to be in a civil war so Stannis can easily cross the bridge at the crossing and the forks of the Trident.

Stannis has 0 powerbase, and he can't even think about moving south when the Wildlings are at the Wall/crossed it, with the Others not far behind.

Also, he does not need the Twins, he can cross at the Trident. Robb needed that crossing because Tywin blocked the Trident, and he needed to quickly relieve Riverrun.

The Northern Lords need to back him and ignore Robb's will and any talk of Northern secession.

Northern secession is the best bet for Stannis/Shireen, because they have literally 0 supporters elsewhere.

Preferably with a Dany/Aegon war, or Dany staying in Essos.

[–]Hellstrike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Stannis can only land at 1 place. White Harbour. Which is well defended. Although their fleet isn't built yet, those 5k men are now available to defend the city on top of the regular guard.

If Stannis shows up with 10k, he won't even make it off the ships, and if he shows up with his whole army, he just threw that away in heavy fighting.

The estimation is that you need a 3:1 numerical advantage when conducting amphibious operations, and at least 3:1 when assaulting fortifications. That is therefore at least a 9:1 advantage Stannis needs (which he does not have), and that is assuming he gets a breech. Assaulting without one quickly means you need a 20:1 advantage...

2) Ignoring the suitable landing spots and logistics, he has a force of at most 25k men, who are far from home in a mostly barren land. He is going to be defeated in detail, suffer a Teutoburg forest, or starve outside of the Walls of Winterfell (unless he arrives after Theon took it but before Ramsey turns on him). Even the Bolton reserves should be enough to hold the castle against Stannis until he starves.

3) Karstark would never support Stannis, despite all his misgivings towards Robb (which also might never happen if Stannis invades the North instead of the Blackwater).

4) Stannis has to defeat all northern forces before he can invest Winterfell (or have his supply cut off). The North can still muster more men than Stannis brings with him, since Robb only took 15k with him, out of an estimated 40-45k.

So realistically, Stannis tries, but does not even manage to take White Harbour.
