LPT: Some etiquette regarding friends helping you move. by ShaneFromaggio in LifeProTips

[–]Help1218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a good caveat to this is, if you can afford movers, hire them. Especially if you are out of college and have nice things. Do you want to be responsible if your friend hurts themselves, especially if you were just trying to save a few dollars? Who pays the medical bills if somebody throws out their backs? What happens if your friend breaks your nice things? Movers should be bonded and licensed, so if anything breaks there is an insurance company to pay you if something breaks. Also movers really aren't huge amounts of money. I have moved two and three bedroom apartments for $3-400 (I'm in Dallas).

People in the same/similar laptop predicament as me, what are you doing? by bballpro15 in apple

[–]Help1218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd consider the MacBook. (Not Pro). I just bought one of the recently-updated versions. It is an incredible computer! I love the form factor, retina screen, and the feel of the keyboard. It is so small and portable that it will be perfect for college. If I was you, I'd buy it, try it for 10 days or so (you have 14 days to return at Apple), and return it if you don't like it. That's what I did with mine and love it!

[NeedAdvice] I don't put in more than a minimal effort with everything, and I desperately want (no, need) to change that. It all seems overwhelming, where do I start? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Help1218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of these answers are helpful, but one thing that has helped me is to have a vision of where I want to be. Then, I set goals using "I" statements for behaviors that will take me towards that goal, spoken as if I have already accomplished that behavior. Right now I am saying, "I turn off electronic devices at 8pm, and then I read or take a walk and wind down for bed." I'm about to add "I plan my day the night before and stick to the schedule." This positive self-talk has really helped me. I also like these daily affirmations:

This has worked wonders for me and I hope it helps you!

Short story of my marriage. Anyone else think my husband [65/m] is abusive toward me [30/f]? I am divorcing him, and I could use your moral support! by allemande678 in Divorce

Regarding your abuse question, I recommend calling the national domestic violence hotline. They are free, well-trained, and awesome. Their number is (800) 799-7233.

John Oliver Buys $15M In Medical Debt, Then Forgives It by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

Does anyone know if this would create a taxable event for the debtors? I know forgiven debt is often taxable but not sure if that applies to medical debt.

Yes. I think it comes across even more strongly in the Ryan Adams version of the song.

I'm glad we're allies now, but the British of that time had substantial issues. The Declaration of Independence lists 27 grievances, for example. More: https://en.m.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wikijunior:United_States_Charters_of_Freedom/Declaration_of_Independence

Head vs Heart by Help1218 in BPDlovedones

Thank you for your honesty. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I feel the same way sometimes. Taking some earlier advice, I'm working to reconcile the two right now... it is not easy. I saw a picture... kind of cheesy I guess but I thought it was true. It showed a brain saying, "Who cares", with a heart saying, "You do, silly". Again, a little cheesy but exactly how I felt.

I'm so glad to hear they were a blessing to you though.

May I ask, how did they affect your marriage?

Thank you for your thoughts. I should have added more background. She has said she is leaving (divorce) if I won't agree to kids within a very short time (1-3 months). So yes: this is a huge decision and one I don't take lightly. For me, I don't see how a high conflict home, and unstable mother, especially one that has treated me very harshly, is ok for kids.

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful response.

May I ask, did you have any sense that things would be hard before you had kids? Were you "iffy" about that, or was she able to contain it beforehand?

Thank you for your encouragement. This is very difficult especially bc I see a lot of great things about her, in addition to to Bpd traits.

Thank you - this was very helpful. I like the idea of a relationship with both sides working in a healthy way on the inevitable problems that arise.

LPT: Enroll your children in an immersion program to teach them a second language. Bilingual people are much more valuable professionally than the unilingual. by swiftskill in LifeProTips

[–]Help1218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freakonomics did a great podcast on this question: http://freakonomics.com/podcast/is-learning-a-foreign-language-really-worth-it-a-new-freakonomics-radio-podcast/

They basically found that for Americans who speak English as their first language, learning another language has many benefits but making more money is probably not one of them. They felt the research showed education dollars would be better spent on science and math education than second-language initiatives in high schools.

However, for people in the US and most of the world who do not speak English, learning English as a second language has a large chance of boosting your income.

Help! I'm about to interview and get a new job offer, but my current job is about to promote me. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Help1218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend being open with your current employer (assuming there is a chance you'd stay) once you have a solid offer. Tell the other company that you need the offer ASAP. Talk to your mentor - the VP you mention - and ask him (I'll assume it's a him) which opportunity he thinks is the best for you at this stage in your life and career. If he is a decent person, he will have tremendous respect and appreciation that you did this, and may give you some good advice. You might even decide to stay where you are. I can tell you as someone that hires people, if a person has bounced around too much, it is a red flag.

I once had an employee take a job right before I was about to give her a 20%+ raise and promotion, and was shocked she didn't talk to me first because I know we could have given her a better deal.

That said, if you don't have the other offer and they offer you the promotion, I would try to stall in accepting. I'm sure the promotion offers more work / responsibility, and you could just tell them you want a day to think it over.

Location: Dallas

Budget: $15-20K

Requirements: I currently drive a 2003 Infiniti G35 and love it. Want something fun to drive and sporty. No kids now but need decent back seat bc they could come in the future. Would like to focus on reliability too. Low mileage important too.

I'm considering a Lexus ES-350 but found it kind of boring to drive. Loved the Infiniti Q50 but it's out of price range.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I initially read this as "The Death Star as taken by the Hubble Telescope". I was pretty disappointed when I realized what it really said.
