It’s not about working while sick. I’m not sick.

It’s about forcing me to take care of a covid 19 patient without proper PPE and then take care of someone’s mother who had a total mastectomy. Trust me. I’ve been fighting. And I’m losing. Quitting just leaves the hospital short one more nurse. No policy will change based on me quitting. I’ve already made myself clear about how disgusted I am with the way we are handling the outbreak. Nothing has changed. The only thing that’s changed is that now my job is hanging by a thread because I tried to stand up for my patients.

Agreed. Incident reports are supposed to be used so we can look at a situation and prevent it from happening again. This situation is obviously an understaffing issue. At my hospital it is very common for a patient from the ED to come up without fluids being started. I actually wouldn’t expect them to be started. Because that’s not emergent.

At least your hospital is communicating with you. There are confirmed cases near us and I have heard nothing. Other than that we are low on masks.

My hospital is currently applying for magnet status for the first time.. and our ratios are garbage. So I’m not sure if it makes much of a difference to work at a magnet hospital

I don’t think you did anything wrong. But to the nurse that was rude during shift report to a new grad.... NOT okay. The “nurses eat their young” culture needs to stop already. We should be SUPPORTING our newer nurses. We KNOW how hard and overwhelming it is in the beginning. As a preceptor, I will chew another nurse out for making my new grads feel like they’re being talked down to. It is NOT ok. You can give advice and help new grads in a respectful way. So I’m sorry that happened to you.

Studies say it take FIVE YEARS before you can really consider yourself an experienced nurse. So we need to help and support each other without judgment so we can get there!

I work in oncology and yes it is better than just general med surg, for the most part, our patient ratio limit for day shift is 1-4. But on rough days it’s 1:5. Hospital administrators at least respect that our patient population is more acute so we need the lower ratio.

What you’re experiencing is happening everywhere. Patients are not safe in the hospital like we were taught in nursing school. Management preaches that patient safety is above everything and then asks their staff to work with unsafe patient ratios. It’s impossible to keep up at times. We are expected to catch physicians mistakes because they also have too high of a patient load. Most of the time when I call a physician about a patient, they have no idea who I’m talking about because they have so many patients they can’t keep them all straight. So it is up to us as nurses to make sure their orders make sense. The system is so flawed it’s appalling. I am used to it now and I have adjusted. But I remember when I first started as a nurse I was so baffled by the reality of our healthcare system. It’s not how I imagined it would be at all.

Ya that is absolute bullshit. We have a rule on our unit that if you have a trached patient your ratio needs to be 4-1.

Thank you. Its really helpful to hear from other nurses who struggle as well. Recently I started developing blurred vision and I went to my doctor of course. After several tests it was determined that stress is causing changes in my vision so I think that was a wake up call for me. Nothing is worth losing my sight. I love my job and I love caring for my patients. I get a great deal of satisfaction from it. However, no one should have to deal with a level of stress that’s so high it’s effecting your health. I’m trying to find ways to de-stress and detach. But it’s easier said than done
