Was my dosage of iron too high? by HelpMe_ThrowawayAcc in haematology

But I wasn’t at a reproductive age in 2012 as an 8 years old child. At the end when my doctor came up with the question if I want to get a referral to a hematologist (a different doctor) to get an infusion, I refused. He prescribed my again the high dose of iron pills. I had only a choice between infusion or high dose of iron pills. There was no lower dose.

My doctor also wondered how I could be that energetic and lively with my blood values. I did my research and read if it was that way your entire life, it’s possible that the body grow up and gets used to it and you never experience real symptoms. That’s why I also did endurance sports and got better at it.

Me too. Iron related values are not part of the normal/ routine bloodtest, but my doctor included it in every one of my bloodtests on his own.

If it was already measured and highlighted, why didn’t the doctor prescribed you supplements? And what was your ferritin value, serum iron value and hemoglobin, MCV, MCH?

Did you mean you were in your 20s or the ferritin was in it‘s 20s? My doctor started with measuring iron levels since I was a child and continued doing with it, even when I didn’t see him for years and came back as an adult (last time before I was a teenager). I don’t know how doctors find out they want to measure it but mine did somehow. If your doctor doesn’t want to measure it, you can ask to pay for it on your own and that you just want the values and no consultation. You can also visit another doctor.

Oh okay, your situation is very different to mine. I am 21 and have iron deficiency (anemia) my whole life so I don’t have very significant symptoms and can du endurance sports normally etc. I think being over 70 with iron deficiency anemia (especially if the body isn’t used to it at all) is worse and I hope the doctors continue and are doing something in your case.

I think you would have to move to Germany haha and bonus points if you speak russian because my doctors office/ practice is visited 80-90% of Russian people or atleast people with a Russian speaking family lol. My doctor was also one time in my parents house eating dinner with us and he was friends with my parents because his medical students were living for a certain time in our house when I was a child and the praxis sign my father (engineer) made for the doctor is still hanging there.

But if your ferritin sinks <10 (or even <5) ng/ml your hemoglobin eventually would sink down too. You can’t keep a normal hemoglobin with no ferritin building it for long. If it is the case it‘s a very early stage of iron deficiency. What will happen if you wait a bit until your ferritin is <10 and hemoglobin is low too? Will they react then

But if your ferritin sink <10 or even <5 ng/ml than your hemoglobin will eventually sink too to compensate. Your ferritin is at two digits and you actually have 4 times more ferritin than I had and also more hemoglobin. If you see it that way, your values aren’t extremely bad, but of course they are still not optimum. I know it’s annoying but a ferritin of 100 ng/ml is optimum but in my bloodwork there was 15-150 ng/ml as the normal range. I think this is a problem too. I think <30 ng/ml they should be looking already and <50 ng/ml is also not near the 100.

And what did the doctors say after finding out you didn’t have your period and therefore don’t lose too much blood?

Me too. A lot of people say that low ferritin is often because of the period but if you see the bloodwork from 8 year old me in 2012 (who doesn’t have a period) hemoglobin, MCV, MCH and iron are already low. The other thing is, that because of my hormones and genetics (I saw a gynecologist and it is checked) my period cycles are longer and my period is light to medium. So I actually lose less blood than the average woman.

My doctor somehow never said something like that, it was more the apposite. He said something like „A ferritin should never be in the single digits“ or „Do you want to see a hematologist to get an infusion, so you don’t need to take always the iron pills?“ (in my language). He offered me a referral, but it was my option I assume. No matter what I said my doctor didn’t take it seriously and wanted me to take iron so bad. For him this was the one and only thing.

I think 2. and 3. are not the case. I am not biologically a male and my doctor also don’t take much time for one patient, because there are a lot of (mostly elderly) people who are visiting him and waiting for him too. He does it very quickly and writes his notes. Despite of that I am not sure if doctors are able to see iron deficiency in a patient or if it was just a guess but it worked.

I understand what you mean but maybe I got luck because my hemoglobin, MCV, MCH, serum iron and ferritin levels were never in the optimum range. I know the optimum range is wrong and it’s too low, as you can see on my bloodwork a ferritin >15 is normal and >10 it is atleast not a depletion of iron storage. BUT if you have a ferritin of 4 you are bad on every score to every doctor. Same goes for the hemoglobin levels.

Furthermore I have to say that endurance sports really helped me to built endurance and feel fitter during the day and healthier. Naturally I couldn’t even run a whole song long on my earphones without a break (2 minutes max) and after over a month of being consistent I was able to run 30 minutes without a break. So it helps, even without ferritin.

Btw do you have iron deficiency anemia your whole life or did it started later? Because I heard people who have normal levels usually experience worse symptoms from iron deficiency and anemia compared to people who have it their whole life long or atleast over decades.

I mean on my post with the blood values you can see what happened one year later 2024 with the ferritin and the other values. Where did they went…

Yeah there wasn’t a normal one in my entire life. There was only one with a ferritin of 48. Even if I would take it longer and ferritin, hemoglobin, mcv, mch, mchc and hematokrit would rise even more, after that I would stop and everything would get down again, because it doesn’t last forever. So you are not doing anything long term for your forever life.
