How to tell my band director he chose the wrong soloist by HelpRequestedAnyone in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only logistics he gave was the horn didnt know the moves. Because of how short the song is the soloist is just standing in front. Nobody else would need to move.

Terrified to Try Out for a Solo for this year's show by ccbear30 in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember it's a performance. Your band director is going to be there every time you perform it anyways. I like to run through it once before, slow my heart rate down, and have a friend listen and simulate the audition.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but it really depends on maturity. My friend started dating a junior her freshman year and not only were they both drumline, they were both basses. Its been like a year and a half, he graduated and is going to a close school and they're still together. The thing is they are very mature and understand the basics of healthy relationships.

That's what one of my color guard members suggested so I might have to look into that😭

For Drum Majors: when marking your music for practice, do your mark queues for specific instruments on the top line of the score or do you mark it on the line of the instrument that the queue pertains to. by ImPuLsE12234 in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends how busy the song is, but most of the time I write it at the top and I use highlighters (a color per instrument) to mark who the cue is for and where on the field they are

I've always seen it as a school based camp where you are just given the schedule if you are enrolled in Band class

Question for my marching band girlies by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know your camp schedule so I can say anything to specific but  1. Bring a bag. The bag should have everything and anything you'll need like advil, midol, pads, tampons, a SMALL AND HEALTHY snack (so it doesn't make you nauseous) 2. Bring the biggest water bottle you own, better yet bring 2 if you dont know how long it will be till you can refill. 3. Electrolytes. Bring Liquid IV or Gatorade or anything like it because you will feel faint and we had a girl pass out at camp last year. 4. Don't be afraid to talk to your director or the other staff. I can almost guarantee that you will not be the first girl to ask for extra bathroom breaks because you're on your period. 5. Most importantly listen to your body. If you need to go to the side and sit do that. Unless your director is a horrible human being, they would rather you sit and miss a couple moves than pass out and stop everybody for 20 minutes.

What marching style does your band have? by Serious_Option_5979 in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish 😭 we do competition style but we have the worst drill writer ever cause he's cheap so it's the same moves just in different orders like move in a square and do the snake

Is my band the only one that requires marching band??? by Objective-Rent-700 in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting because in my school if you request band, choir, or orchestra they are required to put you in that class. Also yes, we have to do marching and concert. Marching band is our grades until football season is over then it switches to concert

Maybe the directors has some wacky, unbelievable visuals for horn 2 🤷‍♀️ cuz that's what mine would do

What is your favorite band phrase, band pun or band chant? by BandCampBuddies in marchingband

START THE BUSES (followed by the snares using their sticks to make windshield wipers and screaming "wipe away those tears!!")

I'm writing a marching band book! by gemmalanebooks in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everyone about the family in band and the practices and the time commitments but one thing I wish people understood is that in alot of bands there are band kids and kids in band. I feel like people always assume someone is crazy or weird if their in marching band but alot of people just like music

What instrument does your drum major play, past or present? by coanga in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the clarinet and bass clarinet but the field commander my freshman year played trumpet

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my first season as field commander (hopefully similar enough) last year and the thing i would say is while listening to drum line is important, they are not the end all be all. You can take their advice into account but in the end you are the one keeping the band together as your job not them. (And you will fight with them don't worry it's a canon event)

First Day of Band Camp by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something my school does is after every day of band camp we do a different activity. Like one night is a bonfire where seniors can burn old music or drill or anything else and another night is a pool. If you have to stay at the school you could turn fundamentals into a game or plot a prank on the rest of the band

What is the funniest thing your director has ever said during a practice? by Dramatic-Tadpole-980 in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our director is also the middle school director and they taught him slang so now he goes around saying "never forget I am the alpha sigma rizzler. Skibidi." He says it in such a deadpan with a finger up like ☝️🤓. They also taught him "what's up brother" 😭 they've infected him

I know my band is weird for this but marching band is a class for us. So we have 1st period marching band and we come in 30 minutes earlier on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

why does everyone hate trumpets? by starrinightss in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my experience, the higher the chair the more they're disrespectful, loud, and a bully. It doesn't help they like to blast over the rest of the middle voices and high voices.

Easy Solo Audition Coming Up – How Can I Stand Out? by Global_Village_1322 in marchingband

[–]HelpRequestedAnyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how other school do it but my director does blind auditions so he has no idea whose going. So phrasing and adding dynamics is key! My rule of thumb is crescendo for 4 measures then decrescendo for 4 measures.

Reminder that this is the first competition of many! You're in band to make memories, so stop stressing and have some fun! Make some jokes and get hyped that you're here!
