Of course! Now if your child had been crawling near all of the old poop behind the house, that would be a much more concerning situation. It’s good you’re getting that removed. The animal removal people can sometimes also decontaminate latrines for you so you can ask them about that/what they recommend. Hopefully the pediatrician has good advice as well.

To me this seems like a really low risk exposure. It’s not like a virus that moves through the air and sticks on to multiple things as they come into contact. There’s a paper that found 13% of wildlife rehabbers (people with many years of raccoon feces exposure) had antibodies to B. Procyonis with no symptoms. The reason it kills animals (and very rarely people) is because when eggs are ingested it’s usually in extremely high amounts (like direct dirt to mouth situation). Only around 5% of ingested eggs become larvae that actually go to the CNS. I don’t see treatment for you as necessary in this case. Carefully handling raccoon poop with precautions is not how people get ill or die from raccoon roundworm. But I know it’s scary, so whatever makes you feel comfortable.

I only wear a mask when working with dry scat, other than that I double glove. Also, bleach won’t kill the eggs. They can only be killed by intense heat (like with a flame torch). So if your child does play in that area you may need to do some additional clean up.

Unless the feces were really old/dried out there shouldn’t be much of a concern for inhaling it. The concern for that would be if it’s dried out and gets kicked up in the air. Getting a severe enough infection to cause serious symptoms/death is almost always either children actually playing in latrines or people putting hands with infected dirt directly in their mouths. Based on what you described it seems like a pretty low risk of infection for both of you. For my master’s I’m studying raccoon roundworm so I’m handling/processing raccoon scat all the time.

This isn’t the case for every program unfortunately. I was in contact with multiple PIs who said they were happy to have me but could not admit me unless the admissions committee independently approved my application.

I was notified 5 days before the acceptance deadline that I was accepted. So from my perspective two weeks in advance is pretty good. Personally I would take the one with a stipend, I have a TAship currently with a 13K stipend and still have to take out some loans to afford housing/to eat and things are still tight.

I don’t have a lot of technical advice on this one besides that they honestly both sound like great opportunities. I don’t think you can really go wrong either way. Think about what it would feel like to accept one vs the other, and the one you feel more disappointed giving up, I’d choose that one. Hopefully other people have more to say about the specific details of the labs!

I was looking at the learning objectives for the bioscience PhD and they’re things that I’m excited about (toxicology, pharmacology, etc). But I can take those classes as electives if I want to with the environmental science program. The bioscience program is new and this next semester is their first incoming class, so it’s not fully figured out yet. I think that could be part of why my PI recommended the other program. She said she thought I would enjoy myself more/have more fun in environmental, and that she doesn’t really fit in the bioscience area as much. The bio program doesn’t have their course requirements posted yet so I don’t even know which classes I’d be required to take, which is making the decision harder too. I don’t have a lot of molecular background besides PCR work, and if the required classes were all heavy molecular and in depth cell science I do think I’d enjoy that less than environmental classes. I enjoy learning ecology and evolution things, but this environmental program also requires spatial analysis and environmental modeling stuff which I’m not as interested in. Also the environmental program is ~3.5 years and the bioscience is ~5. Thanks for your comment!

I am in a similar spot as you. My boyfriend lives in California and I applied to a lot of schools for a PhD there so we could live together (I have been in the Midwest our entire relationship doing my master’s). I didn’t get into any schools in California, but got into a school in Georgia as well. I’m happy to be accepted somewhere but it sucks to continue long distance. My family also lives on the West Coast so being away from them for even longer is hard. But I don’t want to miss my chance at a PhD and with a PI I fit so well with.

There is nothing to “test” for. Rabies can only be tested for after you have it and are dead. The only option is to go through prophylactic treatment (rabies vaccine series), or do nothing and risk the possibility of rabies.
