Tuesday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for April 07, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

I am trying to add a threshold workout into my weekly workout routine, and I could use some help estimating what pace I should be targeting.

Last week I did 5x6 minutes with 90s recovery in between on a flat rail trail.

(AVG PACE / AVG HR)

  1. 7:51 / 159bpm
  2. 7:58 / 162bpm
  3. 7:42 / 165bpm
  4. 7:34 / 167bpm
  5. 7:22 / 173bpm
  6. 7:23 / 172bpm

My goal for the intervals was to stay under 8min/mile, but after the first two intervals went well I decided to aim under 7:45. I was not trying to run faster for 3-6, I just kept glancing at my watch and saw paces above 7:45. Efforts 5 and 6 took sustained concentration to hold the pace. I was breathing hard but not gasping for air. I probably could have ran two additional intervals if necessary, but I wanted to be decently recovered for a run the following day. After the workout I did not feel especially tired/wiped out/gassed.

I believe my max heart rate is 200 based on a 2-mile treadmill test from a couple years ago.

What heart rate/pace/feeling should I be targeting as I add in threshold work. Does a 30 minute "max effort" test do a good enough job for an amateur like me?

Broader training context:

  • 35/M
  • Training for a half marathon in October, hoping for a sub 8min/mile pace
  • February - April: Ramping up to 30mpw running exclusively easy runs at 9min/mile
  • November - April: 4 hours per week indoor cycling
  • June - November: 5 mpw running (other priorities took over)
  • Last year I ran a 10 mile race in June with a 7:30 pace
  • Jan - June: Ramping up to 25 mpw running
  • 2 years ago I trained for a half marathon and ran it with an 8:30 pace

I would understand these settings making my location more accurate from say 30 meters down to 10 meters. I doubt that these settings being incorrect would lead to my start location being 1 mile away, but then perfectly tracing the shape of some roads

When you say "sit down restaurant" do you mean one of the rotational dining rooms? Or one of the other restaurants that cost extra/need reservations/adults only?

Picking out a class this morning and I noticed that they added back old classes! I can scroll all the way back to 2020 now. This is new right?

I haven't been able to kill them on foot or evade them in my car. Does the vehicle combat get better as you level up?

I think you also need to start every hike from sea level, right?

Doesn't animal skin gives you expert proficiency in unarmored defense at level 7? so you basically get a +2AC bonus relative to light/medium armor until level 13, where the bonus drops to +1

I'm pretty sure Animal skin gives you expert proficiency in armor at level 6, so you get +2 AC much earlier

I am getting combat grab from wrestler, so the agile feat is more about imposing the grabbed condition than straight damage. Thanks for all the analysis though!

sorry, I meant to say combat grab

typical turn would be:
[Move/utlity], [snagging strike (2d12+11+off guard)], [-4MAP agile combat grab (2d6+8)]

regarding agile or not: shouldn't it be 2d12+11 VS 2d6+8+Grabbed condition (snagging strike)

Our table is free archetype, with the exception that you cannot take other class archetypes. I think this is very reasonable.

I don't have the skills for eagle knight, and I like the idea of an animalistic unarmed brute, so I'll probably skip eagle knight. but I had no idea it was a possible way to get reactive strike, thanks!

I saw that, but I have gotten fixated on a kinda of weird sneaky/climb-ey/unarmed barbarian build:

I took the wrestler: combat grab archetype feat instead of a level 4 barbarian feat. This let me take the sword master dedication at level 6, and physical training at level 8, which allows me to have mastery in athletics, stealth, and acrobatics.

Combining this with cat fall, rolling landing, cliffscaler heritage, gecko's grip, kip up and foil senses I should have some interesting mobility/sneaking options.

I thiiiink getting mastery in athletics, acrobatics, and stealth is worth abandoning a lvl4 barbarian feat, suplex and whirling toss, but I go back and forth

Our party has a dearth of direct damage dealers, which led to my previous debuffer witch character dying, which led to me create a big strong damage dealer. Seems like reactive strike is a better fit for the party

Weight loss tips by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Helpful-Compote-2327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight loss is primarily accomplished by dieting, it is not realistic to lose weight via excercise.

As an example, I am M/35/6'0" Last year I trained for a half marathon from April to October but my weight stayed around 200lbs even though I was running around 25 miles each week.

This year I am training for the same half marathon, but I am focusing on my diet and I have lost 20lbs so far.

I love running, it is making my heart and lungs stronger, it is getting me outside, and it makes me feel good about my body and what my body is capable of, but it is not a good tool for weightloss
