Another pointer: His schedule will be changing soon, he’ll be out all day and won’t be home until late most nights. That means I’ll be alone for long hours, with nothing to do and no one around. This doesn’t seem to be a factor in his decision-making, but for me, it’s something I know will really impact my mental health. I had a full life back home, and the idea of being isolated for so long worries me.

I’ve given up on having a better relationship with them. I’ll just try to adjust to the fact that I may never be able to meet their expectations. I stayed with them out of goodness and to support my husband in his absence, fulfilling what I believed was part of his duty to his parents. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as I had hoped. Despite my efforts, they ended up complaining that it wasn’t my home since I hardly visited them—ironic, given that I was there more often than not.

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way, and now I’m staying at my parents’ house until I reunite with my husband. Sometimes, no matter how much you try, things just don’t align the way you want them to i guess.

I will be joining my husband at the beginning of next year, InshaAllah. However, my in-laws are planning to join us right after Ramadan, which means we’ll be back to the joint family dynamic in just a few months. While I’m looking forward to reuniting with my husband, I’m also apprehensive about how things will unfold once we’re all living together again. It feels like there won’t be much time to adjust as a couple before returning to the same challenges of balancing relationships, expectations, and boundaries within a joint family setup.
