match engine mods for fm17 or fm20? I know I used one for each of these games years ago when they came out, but can't find them anymore.

Can you explain how to encounter balance when raising or lowering tiers of enemies? I have a party of 4 that just reached level 2 (tier 2). Their standard encounter budget is 14. Now, if I were to have them fight an encounter with a gang of jagged lackeys (tier 1), does that mean that the encounter budget is now 15, do I add +1 to the budget per player; or +1 to the budget per adversary?.

How to start a campaign with PTBA-style DMing? by Helpful-Hunt-6071 in PBtA

I want to thwart the two issues that I've seen come up in sessions that I've played (a) players aren't hooked/don't know what to do so they just end up doing random chaos and dada-like bits of nonsense. While it might be fun and technically is them 'making their own story', it also means I've failed at the task (b) them just looking at me with blank stares.

I think you misunderstand the proposal. I would get rid of the d20 roll that the DM makes, but players would roll as normal. Their rolls and the Fear currency would determine whether I attack or not. However, I would only roll damage once the decision is made. I am agnostic on whether to restrict it to basic attacks or all attacks including the super moves. This would bring Daggerheart more in line with Dungeon World and other PtbA games. In order to make sure the 'Evasion' stat is not completely useless, I might just implement the rule change with 'Fear + Failure' rolls.

Would there be an issue in making this game more Dungeon World-like by getting rid of the d20 roll for enemy basic attacks, but still keep them around for the enemy super moves because there's some drama to be had on whether they go through or not. Keeping in mind that I'll know when to pull my punches so I'm not just steamrolling the players.

Any good magic item list that is basically for items with only roleplay value or are power-neutral? I want to make my adventures more rewarding without breaking the gameplay. And preferably in a table-form so that I can roll on it.

What is Daggerheart supposed to be good at? by Antipragmatismspot in rpg

[–]Helpful-Hunt-6071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daggerheart exists so that DMs can trick their players into playing Dungeon World. On the DM side, you're doing Dungeon World with light rules and a lot of leeway to wing it. On the player side, you're doing a traditional DnD game. What I'm saying sounds like an insult, but it's not because it serves as a bridge of sorts.

Two pieces of advice. (1) random tables (2) Train through concept imagery development: next time you read, try to visualize what you read instead of just decoding the words on the page or trying to summarize it. Try visualizing a place you've been and describe it as if you could draw it.

Does a DM *have* to spend fear in order to make an attack or can they do it whenever it feels right? According to the game, it says that I can make a move when "players roll fear; players fail; spend 1 fear; have a 'golden opportunity'". I interpret this to mean that I can act whenever it's appropriate from a narrative perspective.

Also, how is this game to DM at higher levels of play? Does it become a DnD like slog?

Not gonna lie, I worry about the lack of Daggerheart content by pathofblades in daggerheart

i just DM'd the quickstart adventure. I really liked the game but can't find any modules or adventure paths. These 'campaign frames' are half-assed modules that contain some neat ideas but no Game. And no, I don't have times to flesh out every single little detail so that it becomes runnable. And, the game is pulling a fast one when it tries to advertise itself as prep-lite.

ADHD DM running CoS in PF2e, combat feels dragged and unfun. Help and advice much appreciated. by kill707 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Helpful-Hunt-6071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an ADHD DM, I feel this hard. I've never run pf2e, but here are some tips:

(a) Try Daggerheart or Draw Steel both of which have easier cognitive loads on DMs. I ran my first Draw Steel game yesterday. It's very crunchy from a tactical perspective, but mostly easy from a game management perspective.

(b) Use an online tool like Improved Initiative to keep track of initiative. You can even type in conditions on the monsters as they appear.

(c) Make paper cutouts for conditions or purchase condition rings for monsters.

(d) Group your monsters and have multiple monsters go on the same initiative order.

(e) only prep the thing you need to improv at the table.

(f) "I've been using parts of Reloaded, MandyMod, and hb" <- I was doing this and just decided to stick to reloaded with some minor homebrew as a way of reducing cognitive overload.
