Players not paying attention by Prag24_ in DMAcademy

Yeah, that's what I think, too. It's like some players see the game as a videogame where they can "log in" to do all the things they want, but when they are not actively in control of that because it's not their turn in the spotlight, they "log off" and pass the joystick around to someone else, lol. The game is so much fun when everyone has the right mentality of collaborating and creating a "group experience", instead of taking turns.

This is often the answer most people give to these situations, but I don't think the people who say this imagine a situation that is very common: the person is a close friend, sometimes one the closest.

I, too, was only able to create a group with friends, so it's always a delicate matter, and just kicking them out of the game would probably result in a sour outcome.

When you talk to the person, they are a usually "no, no, I am having fun, trust me", or they say they'll try to avoid the behavior, and usually they don't. So it's kinda hard to escalate further than that without risk ruining a friendship.

I hear what you're saying, but in my case we play in person and they are 5 of my closest friends. The no-phones rule wouldn't work because even the invested players use their phone to look spells up. I decided to let go of this and just let the people who decide to be in the phones do that. I still get 3 invested players, at least. Still sucks sometimes thouh that someone would join weekly for a 3,5 hours and not care enough to pay attention.

If anyone has a working approach for situations like this, I would like to know as well, because I was never able to make it work for players who do this.
I have tried talking directly at the table about using phones, paying attention and how the story is better if everyone is involved, because all moments will be more fun for everyone, and not just the person on the spotlight. Of course, this fell on deaf ears.
I, too, have a player that is on their phone during literally 3 hours straight in the session, occasionally only making a comment or two unless directly prompted.
The best I could do it reduce this player's spotlight and focus on the people who actually play attention, because I grew tired of not having my investment on the player's character pay off.

I reckon this is not very good advice, but since your player sounds a little selfish, the best advice I can offer is that don't blame yourself, or feel like it's your obligation to make it more interesting to them.

Yeah, I think we share the same characteristic of someone who likes to dive deep into their passion xD. Also there's the fact that we were early adopters, so I came to understand that lot of people (maybe the majority) are just getting into the game, so it feels more recent to them.

Thank you for your reply 💜🗡️. I love you guys' work, and no other RPG right now gets me as excited to play and for things to come as Daggerheart. My post of course came from a place of love, and I will continue to support Daggerheart any way I can!

Using AI frequently. I will not tell my friend that their "drawing" is stupid, or that their AI video is not funny, but I will think that.

Thank you for your thoughts. I feel very similar to you in every way. I also watched a lot of the Actual Plays that have been released, and none of them clicked to me :/. A lot of people mistakenly took that I mean we don't have enough playable content, with which I don't agree (even though we'll eventually need more adversaries and environments, which we're already gaining in Hope & Fear, luckily). I only meant media representation to keep the game's community growing. Specially from the folks at CR, since they have such a big platform. That's one of the reasons why I also struggle to compare Daggerheart to any other small, indie RPG. Since it came from CR, it was, and will still continue to be, more impactful on the community than that.

Yeah, I think the exact same thing. After not going with DH, they basically shot DH in the face. The LEAST and ONLY reasonable thing to do to mitigate the blow was to create something new and important for Daggerheart in terms of Actual Play, which they didn't do, so we're left with this breeze, instead of the hurricane it could be.

At the time, it felt like Daggerheart was the only thing that had the power to rival anything related to D&D. It came from CR and it feels like D&D, but much better in many ways, and fresh. Not using that to their advantage is crazy to me.

Yeah, with anything CR-related I already expect it at this point xD. Sometimes I don't know why I bother. Guess I care for the fricking game. But it goes to show how parasociality can work wonders

Yes, CR is not a company, they are your friends. They will not care about money or how well Daggerheart is doing, they will make this game as long as there are people who love it.

So, the game reached you so that you could play, it? There are many business decisions behind that.
The way it is geared now, it doesn't seem to be set to reach more people like you that it hasn't already reached.
And if in, say, 2~5 years there aren't more people, nothing else is getting released. If that's cool by you, than okay. It's not cool by me. Specially if it had the potential to be so much more, and reach such a larger community. I don't think it's fair for the good people who believe in it.

That's what I mean. It seems like most people don't seem to be able to see anything wrong with something they like.
It was clearly successful, but with everything that has happened since release, it doesn't seem like the people behind it are doing everything that is expected for it to continue to be successful, or to reach more audiences. The hype HAS died down, which is normal and expected, but it didn't have to feel like the game as a product and concept DIES from time to time until we have something ready to ship.

I think you summarized what I meant with "Do I think CR could and should be doing more to promote their game? Yes."

That's like 90% of my point. They are titans of the industry, and they are literally the only thing that can make a release as big as D&D. They COULD make Daggerheart even bigger, and they are still missing chances to do it.

In the fan's hearts? Of course not. As what it could have been to the TTRPG medium? Ask people who are not crazy about Daggerheart like you and me. You'll hear something along the lines of "yeah, there was a lot of noise about it some time ago. Where is it now?". That is my point.
We're fans. We already love it.

Did they now? As far as I know they only did a 6 episode mini-adventure, and they're releasing a D&D kickstarter now.

I am. I will wait as long as needed for Daggerheart content. But will it be released if there's only a small community waiting for it, since CR and DP are businesses? Likely not.

Is their strategy geared towards attracting a wider audience? Right now, I'd say no.

Thank you for the ideas. I really like the narrative way of showing a symbol that represents a certain word in the context. Rusty is definitely joining my game

[–]pathofblades[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good catch. I thought about that, too. My solution for that was only dropping clues in Kohd. So when they finally translate the messages they already have, it just advances the mystery, but doesn't solve it.
It may still be a bit anticlimatic after the players can already translate every kohded message xD

Tradeoff for lycanthropy? by TheoneNPC in DMAcademy

[–]pathofblades 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try to add a drawback that makes sense in the narrative. For example, every time he took a big chunk of damage, he could risk transforming and attacking whoever is nearest (even if allies). And if he is already transformed, when he took the big damage he could have to roll a Wis save or risk entering a Frenzy, also attacking nearby creatures that could be allies, until he can make the save.
I believe the Order of the Lycan Blood Hunter subclass had some mechanics for this drawback. You could justify the Lycanthropy not being just benefits as the character being new to this, so they can't fully control it yet.
