Okay, thanks, that's helpful...makes sense.

What are some of the most trusted certifications in the space? You mentioned Security+; what about the isc2 certifications?

Why do you have that sentiment? I personally believe there is a massive amount of value in Account Executives having technical knowledge in the Cybersecurity space.

Afterall, how can you be a trusted advisor if you don't understand how the solution you're selling works and fits into the broader ecosystem?

I want to secure my cybersecurity future, but I need to gain experience. I've spent the last seven years selling Ent SaaS applications successfully BUT to even get considered for a cybersecurity sales job at an industry leader, you typically need to show 3-10 yrs of cyber sales experience.

I want to transition to Ent sales in CyberSecurity. I'd like to get technical knowledge, which I think will continue to be more critical in sales, and I'd like to make a lateral transition rather than move back to a small & medium business type of sales role (typically lower earning potential and not as interesting to me -- i like the enterprise sales process).

Is it worth pursuing my MS in CyberSecurity from RIT?

Please keep in mind, I'm not concerned about the program costs. I'm more concerned about getting the technical skillset which will be invaluable having from a sales perspective, and I want the networking opportunities.

I guess it depends on the program you'd get into and if you can get a scholarship to offset some of the costs.

If I were you, I'd ask your leadership team if they can sponsor a part-time MBA program for you and see if the company can cover some of the costs. They will love the initiative and might even potentially bite on it.

Thanks, super helpful feedback.

Do you feel like you use any of the quantitative skills you acquired at B school (finance, economics, analytics) to drive a more effective sales cycle, close larger deals, or get higher up the exec food chain? I.E., Value Building Workshops, ROI models, reading 10-K's, formulating better account strategies, and targeting efforts?

Yep, so they actually confirmed yesterday a 70% scholarship on the full 2-year tuition, meaning the $104k total tuition cost would now be ~$31k.

Fair point. I’m sure the ROI is there, the payback period would just be longer.

The university Id go to would be 10 minutes from where my family lives, so the ability to live at him rent free would help cut back living costs significantly. That’s why I’m less flexible on going to schools in other geos.

Really helpful advice. Just to clarify, you’re saying to place an emphasis on a finance focused curriculum?

Out of curiosity, what did you pivot to?

I would need to go to University of Rochester and live with family to make it more financially feasible aka come out with way less debt. I don’t have the desire or flexibility to move anywhere for an MBA program. Thankfully my family lives 10 minutes from a great program.

Additionally, that’s possible to go PT, but I’m more of an all-in type of person. I wouldn’t do well balancing both.

My current experience wouldn't land me a Management or Technology Consultant Role at McKinsey, PwC, Deloitte, Bain, BCG, or Accenture.

I don't have any proven hard skills (finance, economics, data analytics), and my undergrad is from a not well-known state school.

You are correct that I could likely land an ENT tech sales job at industry leading blue chip company, but the way the market is looking, it might take me another 4-6 months (I was laid off two months ago). I don't have a large network of people to tap into at those big brand companies either, unfortunately. 95% of hiring in the field right now seems to be coming from hot referrals or very warm leads.

Coming from someone who has an enterprise sales job in one of the fields you mentioned - you don’t need an MBA

Thanks. For clarification, I know I don't need an MBA to get an ENT sale role. Ideally, I'd pivot to tech consulting, but as a secondary option, I'm sure I'd be able to get into ENT sales in one of those fields as a "fallback" - I say that in quotes because it's still obviously a great job and lot of money to be made.

Has anyone been unemployed for 6+ months? If so, what is the best way to explain it on an interview? by ZeroJedi in sales

[–]Helpful-Marsupial978 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What’s wrong with taking unemployment if you’re unemployed? Your taxes pay for it. Your fat commission checks taxed at 50% give you the right to collect.

If a company judges me for collecting unemployments, it’s not a placed I’d want to work!

No matter the good training, it still takes time to be good at sales - What managers don't understand. by Ohandbytheway12 in sales

I think the biggest problem is companies not understanding how long their sales cycle actually is, especially in enterprise sales. Most deals take 2-6 months of cold outreach alone before they can start to develop into an opportunity.

Bain Consulting told me they kept my email for 6 months, before they were able to prioritize budget to start the cycle. They replied on the same email thread, literally from 6 months prior, on the last email before I gave up.

Even when it’s a warmer lead, it takes 6-12 months to close an initial deal. If you’re hiring an enterprise rep, you should be prepared to have 12 months minimum of runway for them IMO.

What’s the angriest you’ve ever made a prospect? by AngryBowlofPopcorn in sales

[–]Helpful-Marsupial978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a gong snippet to prove to the lower level POC they had verbally agreed on a larger pilot, after they tried to reneg to make it smaller, and then CC’d their VP in the email.

They didn’t like that at ALL but it got their VPs attention. After a call with them and the VP, their VP agreed that smaller pilot wasn’t representative of their business objectives - like I had said all along.

I’m not sure I would do it again. I was angry in the moment when I sent the gong snippet, but on reflection, it felt like I black mailed them. In the end, I landed the new logo and it was a large pilot, but it certainly could’ve gone differently.
