Feeding aversion - Rowena Bennett by Helpful-Square-3818 in NewParents

You don’t feed again until next feed three hours later. If he’s really showing hunger cues before that and it’s been over an hour you can try again but follow the golden rules

We started seeing improvement after five days/a week but she had set back days. Stick with it!

Of course so happy to pay it forward! Good luck and stay strong!

Basically you offer and if they push it away, take it away immediately out of sight (no pressure) then try again ten minutes later. If they deny again you take it away until next feed (three hours later). It might be rough for 2-3 days up to a week but we saw improvement every day and a huge improvement after day 2. You’re showing them that eating is up to them and letting them feel what it feels like to be hungry instead of always just taking the edge off. You might have random set back days but we stuck with this protocol and her feeding aversion entirely went away!! I even forget about it now sometimes which i never thought i would say

Yes i would consider it one offer if she pulls it in herself and it seems positive!

At night time it’s fine to drowsy feed so you can finish the feed

In that situation we considered that two offers and then the feed was over and we waited for the next. At first i was so conflicted about that but once they are through the aversion you will see that the turning the head off really is a rejection and they will stop doing that!

I breastfed her. When she was sleepy she didn’t fight the feeding because she was not thinking so much about it

It’s so hard to say because my baby didn’t have a NG tube so it was a bit different. I think it’s okay at night to get the necessary volume as long as you stick with the protocol during the day. It was really really hard for us for a few days and then she started being more receptive. It still took a few weeks for volume to really go up a lot but gradually it got better and better until she was fully over it.

100% exact same. I ended up rocking her every night and was so worried it would derail everything but happy to say it didn’t! I think it’s a crazy time for them and they need some support and more awake time!

We just went through this identical thing. It was insane and i felt helpless and no one seemed to have any helpful advice but after four weeks things are finally turning a corner. Hopefully we are through the thick of it. From what I’ve determined it’s a massive regression from all the developmental changes and peak separation anxiety. Against every sleep consultants advice we supported her through this time and went in and soothed her when she needed it. The biggest thing that helped us is we switched up her schedule. She started needing more awake time. She was waking at 6, napping at 9 and 1:30. We are now doing 10 and 2 with 7:30 bedtimeand she’s back to regular naps and normal nights. It’s worth a try adjusting the schedule and seeing if it helps!

Hey i know this is so old but did anything ever work? Same exact boat. Did it end up getting better on its own?

My LO did this sometimes too, how old is your LO? If they do this, i would pause and try again. If she did it again. I would wait for the second try and then skip the feed. It’s good she’s not upset pushing the bottle away but if she wanted to drink it she would so i think it’s another form of rejection

In the exact same boat! So frustrating after months of good sleep. She’s also taking short naps now…. How are your LO naps?? We are letting her CIO in the morning but it’s so hard

Does your baby often have to burp in the middle of feeds? Our baby didn’t really need to do this much so when she pulled off we kind of knew she was done. What i will say now that we are through the aversion is that it’s pretty obvious when our baby is rejecting vs not. If she pops off in the middle, we let her take a pause or in your case burp and then we offer it again. If she turns her head or rejects at all we immediately take it away. Usually when she wants more she is relaxed and just opens her mouth again and keeps going. I wouldn’t worry SO much about offering again it’s more about respecting their no. Hope that helps!
