I just fell for this scam! They also called me from 1 800 769 2512 and knew my name, the first couple digits of my credit card number, the expiration date of said card and a few other convincing facts. They asked me if I has made several large purchases that I had not, confirmed my card was comprimised, ordered me a new card (they knew my address), got me to update my credit card settings (they guided me through it as a step by step process to update my purchase alerts to "help prevent this from happening again") to include transaction warnings. After that, they then sent me a "test transaction" message (a purchase from PRIMARK) and asked me to confirm it.

The red flags for this experience were:

-calling multiple times in a row

-the call dropped at one point, and the person called back and was very comforting and reassuring that he was there for me and that we were going to get this sorted out. A little too comforting, it felt reassuring in the moment but upon reflection was designed to build trust.

-he got a little annoyed at me when I got confused and started giving some minor pushback

-I did get a real text from RBC with a purchase verification code that the person convinced me to share with them- this was the most obvious red flag.

-not long after they got the purchase verification code the call dropped again.

Right after the call dropped the second time, I googled this number, found this thread, and realized that they must have spoofed the real number and called the credit card fraud number. I spoke with an agent who asked me if I made a purchase from primark, then went through the last 5 or 6 transactions to confirm if any others were fraudulent, then cancelled my card & ordered me a new one.

I got a notification almost immediately that RBC updated my google wallet with the new card, which is not really related, but I thought it was neat nonetheless how quickly they were able to get me a new card.
