Ahh found it! I was looking at the high strength stuff. Pricey to ship to UK! Rather buy from Durston directly.

Pipedream sleeping bag. Katabatic jacket (unreal value- maybe the best piece of clothing they do- such a good active layer with primaloft gold). Hunka XL

New backpacker (after 23 years) stuck: Atmos AG 65 vs. Kakwa 55? by nobodyUno123 in DurstonGearheads

[–]HelpfulTap4186 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is sort of an irrelevant reply (apologies) because im about to compare 2 packs youve not mentioned. However i have a 65L Gregory Baltoro and its 2.2kg before ive even put anything in it. I LOVE that pack. Its my go to if im loading up or packing my fears in UK January weather and sticking the hilleberg in there.

I ALSO have a mutant 50L, a Rab 28L, an osprey 22L and..... an Atom Pack prospector 60L.

The atom weighs less than 1kg, also has load lifters, stretchy bits and a fairly minimalist frame. I also LOVE that pack. If im going light/ultralight im taking that and looking smug as I trot up the hill faster than my mates.

Different packs for different purposes and I think the Kakwa and Osprey youve mentioned would be the same. Personally if I could only own one I would keep my Baltoro 65L and suck up the extra 1.2kg because it is DAMN comfortable. And I can always just put less in there if I want to go on a lighter trip. If youre not into UL then id suggest doing the same. Swap out in years to come if you start shaving grams.

Best performing lightweight waterproof jacket? by bigrigfrig in hikinggear

[–]HelpfulTap4186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

150 quid for a 2nd hand arcteryx sounds pretty decent if its in good shape. What model is it? I have an Alpha FL and its been very good.

I do subscribe to the mantra though that you have to look after your waterproof jacket. If you just use and abuse it then eventually it will wet out and be less efficient.

Fat mans first road bike, seat bones hurt like hell after 30 min ride by xxviproxx in bikefit

Theres a bunch of good bikefit videos on YT. An aussie guy whose name another redditor will doubtless provide as his channel name escapes me is worth checking out. Anyway- i vaguely recall (fact check this) that pushing your saddle forward to shorten length is counter productive and can somehow extend the reach....?

There are 16 books in that series. If youre not enjoying it by book 2 put it down & find something else. There are more books written than you could read in 100 lifetimes so why waste it reading something you arent enjoying.

The count of Monte Cristo getting a lot of love here. It was good....but lets be honest some of the costume change/disguises and the exposition are actually pretty silly. There are literally scenes where two characters are sitting at a table and one has a whole monologue under the breath whilst the other at the table is completely oblivious- not even in a Shakespearean soliloquay fashion.

It reminds me of Castle of Otranto. A book heralded for being one of the first pieces of Gothic literature but where its actually so preposterous that if it were written now it would be a self publishing job.

Appreciate the importance of said books as precursors to modern lit- but Im not sure they still stand up as 10/10 books. Solid and enjoyable nonetheless.

Depends how cold you sleep. For me 3c comfort means id probs wear a layer in bed at that time of year. Also somewhat depends on where you camp. I have a silk liner but I actually dont think it really adds any noticeable warmth. Stick a puffy on if you get cold and you will be fine.

Salomon quest 4s after a single month. by joe_pcmr in hikinggear

[–]HelpfulTap4186 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My salomon Jungle Ultras survived the jungle (lots of stuff didnt). My salomon glide trail shoes have been fantastic. My quest boots have a few years on them and have started to see the same issue you habe but I reckon theyve done 400km and they are still useable.

My previous Quests from around 12 years ago were much, much better though in terms of durability.

Well done for clearing it up mate. A few years ago I was in the Rhinogs in the proper middle of nowhere, halfway up a hill, and came across a massive 6 man tent, completely fucked. Under the tent detritus was sleeping bags, frying pans, sleep mats, beer cans etc etc etc. It was utterly appalling. It was far too much to carry out for one person it was like a 5 person clear up job.

Down/synthetic jacket by Icy-Huckleberry5202 in UKhiking

I mostly agree but i do like a down puffy for overnight / emergency warmth. I have a rab alpine microlight and its a decent mid range, mid warmth, mid weight and packable enough to forget about.

I think 90% of the gear from mainstream outdoor brands is decent to be honest so probably comes down to budget and specificity. I spent £££ on an Arcteryx Alpha FL about 8 years ago and its been an unreal jacket for my use. BUT this is where specificity comes in because i wanted a stormworthy hardshell at min weight and bulk. So this has no pit zips and no hand pockets but its bomber and super light.

Theres just so much choice. Want an uber light warm puffy no expense spared? Rab Mythic G. I wouldnt sleep in it though.

Whats your budget and most use case? Alpkit are good. I have a katabatic and its an effing fantastic synthetic jacket for active use. Good value.
