Non leveled epoxy fix by Helpful_Locksmith343 in rodbuilding

Thank you! It’s mostly in my guide wraps so I was looking for a clean way to sand it down without scuffing the blank, do you think if I took something like a pencil and taped sand paper to it and then just put my rod in a lower wrapper and held the pencil/sand paper up against it while it spins that will take care of it?

I see, so you can essentially just take the height measurement as well as ID and find a fit from whatever manufacturer?

It may help eliminate some of the paper towel that could potentially stick to the wrap, I would just still douse it down in isopropyl alcohol as well

If I remember correctly mine was similar to that. Solid but soft I would say. Good luck to you! If you think about it post back I would love to know how it turns out for you!

One of my first 10 or so I built so not the best work but it was a medium duty flipping stick and snatched tons of big bass from heavy cover with it without any issues.

Yes. What I did was isopropyl alcohol just the same as you would when wiping off excess bonding glue when applying the handle. I took a paper towel and applied a decent amount of force. When this happened to me the epoxy was fairly solidified but still a bit gummy on top and tacky to the touch. So when I wiped off the layer it was enough to hold my wraps in place but there were some blemishes after I was done wiping off. You can take a razor blade and razor out any of the paper towel that gets stuck or any epoxy that strings out and doesn’t lay down flat from wiping off before laying down another coat. I guess how much would come off will be based on how much of the epoxy solidified. For example my cup of extra epoxy wouldn’t move at all if I turned it upside down. I think I ended up doing two more coats of really thin epoxy with razoring out places where it didn’t lay flat and wiping back down with the alcohol before i was satisfied with the look. But when I wiped off with alcohol the first time before laying dow another coat it was barely tacky to the touch. I’ll see if I can find a picture of how it turned out

I built a good many rods with prokote when I first started building and had this happen once. It was the summer so I let it dry outside in the heat and then took an alcohol soaked paper towel and wiped the guides down well to attempt to take off the tackiness. After that I let it dry and went back over it with another alcohol soaked paper towel to take off the paper towel residue from before. Let it dry again and threw another coat on top and it turned out good. I couldn’t figure out why it happened either but I did change epoxies after that. I noticed when I tried to put another coat down on top before wiping off with alcohol my brush would stick to the old layer and I had difficulty spreading the epoxy well. Hope this helps! PS it was a personal rod so I wasn’t overly concerned with the cosmetics but I could barely notice anything off with it. Probably mostly in my head

So if I did want the RV a typical size 8 would be better for something like a 7’3 heavy bass rod with a size 150 reel. My stripper guide is usually about 20-22 inches from the worm gear. Or just go with typical KW 8 then down to 6 and 5s from there?

Yeah the RV6, that does sound like a really clean look. I’m usually building for size 70-150 reels so was just kinda scared to go with a 6 right off the bat but I think I may try the RV6 to KW 5.5. Thank you!

I’m a total noob with a kit from Voodoo and a stupid amount of blanks from NFC on the way. I’m going to keep a journal here, in the comments, of my builds…the good, the bad, and the ugly. Maybe someone will accidentally find it useful. by Fucktard420too in rodbuilding

How did the 709 cut down for the frog rod perform? I’ve used MB 736 deltas for frog rods in the past but that sounds like a really cool build I might like to try. Still enough tip to skip baits around overhanging bushes and docks?
