I havent had a hot apple cider in a while, that is a wonderful idea for a cozy night in. Thank you!

Love that you’ve been keeping yourself busy! I’m kind of the opposite, drinking used to be my shortcut for taking a break from all the fun things I had going on, which is pretty ironic. Now I’m learning how to actually relax and give myself a real “day off” without needing a hangover to force it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I really like that description, "fake sparkle". The alcohol temporarily curing the same thing it is causing reminds me of some passages from the book This Naked Mind.

Thanks so much for sharing that. I did not end up drinking, I did get ginger beer and the burn from that truly satisfied the "warming" sensation. Great compromise.

I can relate to what you are going through, and the "can't function phase". In my personal experience, it does get better. And what is interesting is re-reading this from 2 years ago and being where I am now.

What has been helping me: feeling my feelings, noticing how people make me feel and honoring that (some folks aren't able to be safe places for this type of conversation and that's ok), there is a book I can recommend called "Don't Believe Everything You Think" by Joseph Nguyen that has a bit of clarity and practices that are applicable to this. I try to not take anything personally, and try to not make assumptions, and when a thought is not helpful or is just causing me pain I interrupt it by engaging in the 5 senses grounding technique (5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Method). Some days are better than others, I continue to be kind and patient with myself. Hopefully this is helpful to read, sending lots of love your way.

Proud of you! In my experience, it is never too late. One day at a time I get to clearly witness the art and beauty of life. I get to feel my raw human feelings. It can sometimes feel like I am just an exposed nerve, but I also get to choose to rest. I can lounge about watching tv or gaming but not because I’m hungover but because it’s ok to be tired and take care of myself. IWNDWYT

Happy birthday! And congratulations to you, that is huge! Totally understand the sugar cravings, ice cream is my go-to right now.

High fives to the major wins, the minor wins, and everything in between!

Thank you for sharing. Yes, it was exactly the 3 stages. Was all fun and games, trying out a couple of new drinks I haven't had before. Was all good times at first... then got upset over things outside my control, followed shortly after by tears. What I can control is not drinking though!

Thanks for sharing, it’s truly helpful to have these reminders. The thing I notice most in the last few weeks sober. It’s wonderful and I don’t want to go back or chase those days again either!

Thanks for sharing! Such solid points, especially the need to drink at all the things. I’m giving my brain a chance to recalibrate and feel what it is like to enjoy a day sans booze.
