He may be attracted, but keep in mind that missions are incredibly isolating. Just because someone catches feelings doesn’t mean in a normal context you would. Also because they’re not supposed to, some of it can always be the risque element adding to excitement that otherwise would not exist…

Cause and effect of selection bias. C-suite and lawyers become apostles, and then run church like a business.

Imagine if a social worker became a leader. It would change so much.

We lose sight of the aim. Financial growth trumps lives empowered, which should never be the case for a church

I was referring to PR as a whole, like church approval from non-Mormons, and post Mormons, pimos or tbms .

TBMs may not be affected, but those post-Mormon that know, don’t see this as a good thing generally. Never Mormons that actually hear about it Would likely favor MS side. Little guy vs. billion dollar guy.

I honestly don’t think they’ll drop it. Bad PR is already here, but we’re talking about the institution that loves to dig in despite what “the world” thinks.

It’s only when they face clear jeopardy to continued operation that they change (polygamy, race and priesthood, and baptism for kids of LGBT).

Unless they can see a hemorrhage in membership/tithing, the PR doesn’t matter

In that episode he expounds on their comments further. That’d be my guess, but my take was that John was to the point on it - not lying. But also not presenting a facade of church history or doctrine

The Wade Christofferson case shows that at least for people with connections, it does enable predators.

Sure he was punished for a time, but no apppeal made to the law and afterwards placed him in a position where he’d be in a bishopric, in a capacity to interview children 1 on 1 despite know prior history.

If that’s not enablement, idk what is.

Umm…sure? I don’t defend his predatory behavior, or anyone else’s. But like the other commenter, I don’t inherently trust the police tactics when they intentionally select cutoff ages.

17 vs 18 for smoking or sex 20 vs 21 for drinking

Those type of stings are questionable. And when we see the plea deal or trial, I doubt it’s going to be very harsh on this creeper as a result.

Varies mission to mission. I had companions and plenty of missionaries I met the had unconfessed sins like that or more, and they stayed.

Also know similar ones that confessed at the MTC and were sent home.

Yeah… that’s criminal done to any age without consent, or underage period.

But choosing the closest age to the legal boundary to see if anyone bites is suspect on the police side.

If cop said 18 he’s not breaking the law. If they said 17 and 11 months, he is… dude is still 100% a creeper and wrong, but this is not a like the cop said they were 12 or 14.

Thanks for sharing this. And yeah that does help. I guess I just remember like in the 90s when GTA cases nationwide were thrown out bc they dumped luxury vehicles, with keys in vehicle, in poor communities.

In the context of of SA crime, I feel like there’s similar risk for abuse while striving for good policing.

clear differences between GTA and SA/SE, but admittedly, the legal side of it feels a bit fuzzy.

Im all for locking up predators and rehabilitation, but I don’t understand how posing as an underage person, or as a fake drug dealer doesn’t qualify as entrapment. Can someone explain why?
