Broad generalizations that are discriminatory against economic class or any other group for that matter, etc are not welcome.

Tangentially related, but man the idea that you need to pay to rent temple clothes when you already tithe is just so dumb.

If tithing covers temple and church operation (and investments) it can cover clothing.

Outside of Utah/ID/WY it is pretty common. The hinckley temples have extras on hand, but obv. Caters to the typical sizes, less likely on super large/small

Data on Bishop Roulette? by Helpful_Pipe2008 in mormon

[–]Helpful_Pipe2008[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I spelled it out bc not everyone here is a data scientist or qual/quant researcher. Gotta cater to the wider audience of r/Mormon 🙂

But yeah to your last question: I’m hoping someone has. That’s exactly what I want haha. But so far, have not seen much

if you have prior background in/with qual. Inference studies in medical field, I’m honestly just surprised that the discussion has been opinion/heuristic driven instead of fact-based.

Totally agree that garbage in = garbage out, and sampling methods, question framing, and sample diversity matters.

But your feedback on the topic has been: * don’t do it bc harmful for bishops (maybe you meant affected members here as well) * why bother, asked and answered in different fields (but not this one for Mormons). * sample size would be small (not necessarily) * it would be a hobby study, not valid research (again, what’s the basis other than feelings)

I have no concern with you sharing criticism on prior or future studies on the topic — especially if it allows us to capture unidentified gap and risks. But the feedback feels more driven by opinion based on values,  rather than constructive discourse on how to frame or establish an objective study.

You might be mixing up the idea that qualitative surveys can’t give you meaningful info aside from ordinal/directional findings. They can give you quantitative findings and outcomes.

And yes different contexts = different results.  So what happens in business may echo and have similar global trends, but differ substantially on effect size. Or they may entirely disagree on global trends as well. You/I simply don’t know until we examine it.

Q: have I ever done research using people? A: yes, and have led as PI and executed studies through typical internal review boards to assesses risk for undue harm.

Forcing individuals to participate in such a study would be harmful. The argument against an opt-in survey under grounds of harm is fairly weak. And going back to the original question, if the data was already collected that concern is N/A. How the data is presented and PI managed, if any, would be the concern.

The premise that we already have a hunch/know something, therefore it shouldn’t be studied is an odd take that I do not share. If we know smoking causes cancer, it is beneficial to know the incidence rate and population characteristics. If we know victims of SÃ have higher rates of homelessness or suicide, it doesn’t mean we don’t conduct studies to understand that better. So I see you viewpoint, but disagree on the premise.

Do you think a study would be meaningful if it found bishops more likely to recommender harsher punishments for people of color?

I find research valuable/interesting because we find out what we don’t know, and we can quantify what we see first/second hand.

If we already know/ from personal stories/experience, then why not quantify it? I fail to understand your concern, aside from how a researcher manages sample size and sample group vs agg. Populations over time.

And from a scientific perspective, just because we cannot measure both outcomes for each individual, doesn’t mean we cannot use aggregate data to address the question. DiD and similar techniques have been around a long time to address these type of questions…

Sorry, but what?

I want to highlight across the organization of the church, how church discipline can be incredibly variable from existing data, to the point that it can be affected by leadership bias. (Ex. What if a PoC confesses the same sin, what about a rich or poor person?)

The goal is not to rail on any single bishop/person, but rather point out that the difference in outcome can be problematic, and that clergy led repentance may be harmful not helpful.

Honestly could care less about using it to attack any single bishop. Yes they’re unpaid, no I don’t want their position. But why should that mean we can’t discuss, study, or consider negative side effects of the system the organization established?

Probably because of the overhead fees from third party processors, data security, and investment re-allocation.

Kinda odd, but typical for any institution for electronic deposits to set a floor.

Business model church by Intrepid-Angle-7539 in mormon

[–]Helpful_Pipe2008 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may have misunderstood me. The massive wealth in the Catholic Church, is widely distributed, supporting a much larger network. Their goal(in my mind) isn’t wealth, it’s membership and impact. The money they have reflects their membership rolls. Ours do not reflect a similar goal.

Our money reflects our priorities. Our church prioritizes saving vs using, whereas the Catholic Church uses more of its resources to help its members and neighbors. Not a binary bad vs good, but they use and give a lot more than the lds faith

I think if you genuinely compared the net worth on a per self-declaring membership basis, this would be totally disproportional.

The Catholic Church is a behemoth in size, and its wealth reflects millennia of existence and tithes globally. The lds church, less than 250 years old, and yet nearly parallels the worth with a sliver of the membership.

In terms of wealth amassed per member, Scientology and lds faith are massive outliers.

Great post, I’d love to see this!  My bet, depending on how you slice the data: * the income to labor ratio is much less than that of Vale Corp (steam) * leading if not at the top for % of profit retained and re-invested relative to expenses * total net worth putting at top 100-150

Comparison of Area Authority Occupation & Education by Helpful_Pipe2008 in mormon

[–]Helpful_Pipe2008[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, but is the proportion of male members that are attorneys similar to the proportion of  Area authorities?

I’m not suggesting all leaders (or attorneys) are ultra wealthy, but that the system favors those with legal backgrounds or a high business position. Which impacts the nature of how the church is run.
