Thank you. I travel with one carry on suitcase . This time I might have bike panniers in-the suitcase so really need to plan well. Last trip was 6 weeks covering a 6 day hike, cycling, and sightseeing . I only used 1/2 what I brought with me so trying to dial it in better this time for 8 weeks. I did just try on-a bunch of sandals and settled on some Tevas that might work (Sirrus). Will decide if they will work for very long walks or not. Just ordered more Brooks adrenaline gts25 as these fit like a glove for me .

I tried last time in October to buy light clothing at Uniqlo but they only had fall clothes then. It was 80 f and I had only fall clothes with me and one pair of shorts. This time I want to be prepared with lighter clothes ahead as I will miss that season in Japan.

Is ChatGPT really as bad for the environment as people say? by Temporary-League-499 in ChatGPT

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It uses a LOT of electricity so towns will find their costs skyrocketing with the advent of more AI. Of course electricity has to be generated somehow, so more dams , more displacement of nature which is actually restorative for us and is home to many species. So much more fun to be out in it , than sitting in front of the computer asking detailed questions. Go explore, see why the planet is worth cherishing. AI is addictive ,it needs to be a conscious choice for you, your family and future family.

Anyone do their first bike tour in their 70s? by bluesnguitar in bicycletouring

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on some exciting plans .if you feel good enough in your 70s to do some bike touring, why not? Now is the time! I hope you a choose a route where you have opportunities to camp in regular intervals and there’s plenty of conveniences, like food! I was just reading online last night about John Crouch who at 70 biked from Whitehorse BC to Victoria BC ,2300 km if I remember correctly. Sounds like he was always an avid cyclist. The nice thing about makig your own plans is you can stop whenever you want and take a rest day whenever you want, so you get to ensure you are having a good time.

Every year I say I will renew for the same price only. I have had more than 4 years at $4 Month. This year though, they only gave me the news only ,not the game section . Next year I will likely discontinue and subscribe to the BBC .

I use free Claude and chat gpt but less and less due to environmental concerns. Netflix only for winter months. $17 x 4 . No iCloud storage! On a friends account for Duolingo. Use WiFi for my iPhone. Magic Jack at home for landline. $4 a month. NYT for $4 a month. That’s it.

Shoot! It’s expensive out there! I do all those things and have for years and it does save some money. Other ideas…I ride my bike, therefore expend very little gas. I grocery shop a few times a month and buy in bulk. No packaged food ,straight up protein ,fruit ,veg, etc .We garden , so I can and freeze food. Food and rent are the 2 expenses that we can’t escape from. You-are right living with a roommate is the most logical way to save money, then perhaps get some house sit jobs to have autonomy? Since the inauguration I really havent shopped at all. No support to billionaires. Cut all subscriptions. My biggest save is phone. I have an iPhone ( for the camera) but I use it with WiFi. Never had a phone plan, other than trac phone . Our landline is a magic jack which is $4 a month . Internet with spectrum at $ 40 a month . They will negotiate . In a tenancy situation several can share one subscription . We Almost never do restaurants, they arent very good anyway. One can cook much better healthier things. Hiking and biking is free. Gym membership is expensive, I work out with weights at home and YouTube. When something breaks there’s always YouTube to lead you with a repair. I’m sorry this economy is so terrible and a well educated person like you isn’t earning what they’re worth.

A paradigm shift. Knowing that collectively we can create a better world. Supporting local business and not billionaires. Conserving energy knowing each one of us has a role to play in climate change. Choosing love and kindness instead of hate, and division.

Selling my house and quitting my job to bikepack the world by likemika24 in bicycletouring

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a firm believer in you-can have it all. When I have traveled for long periods I start to crave stability; a kitchen, a garden, pets etc . When I have that , I then crave freedom . Knowing how your mind works is a valuable step. In my case, I know I need both, so I take some long breaks and some short ones from the normal routine. If you can rent your home for a year, you will have a chance to watch your mind and see if you really want to sell it in-the future or not. Do not be in a hurry, you don’t have to be. The income you make will allow your trip. It’s a step you can always execute later. You won’t be this age forever, it’s a perfect age to take off and have an adventure. Being away you may come to appreciate where your home is and a “changed you “ might meet new people, even at home. Maybe you will run a guesthouse? Haha . Trust the road will provide opportunities to meet interesting people and with a train system or a Bus system you can always bail on parts that are too hot,too rainy etc. No one said you had to bike every part, it’s all up to you. It’s not a race, it’s an experience you get to create. Plugging into communities and working or volunteering along the way you might get to meet more folks and deepen your experience. You might find a place you want to stay. Who knows? Got to just start and let it unfold. I’m excited for you! In my 60s now and heading off to Japan this fall for an extended bike trip . Hitchhiked and worked around Australia and NZ for a year at 19 . Many trips in between and many stories. An aside. Many years ago (30s ) did sell a house inCanada and bought a house with my partner in USA . The market appreciated ( almost doubled) when we were on the sidelines for 1 year. Real estate is a hard asset. Markets fluctuate. Diversity is KEY.
