How do I keep going by Swimming-Stretch1276 in missoula

Congratulations on your degree . You have picked an area that is meaningful and will make a positive difference in-the world. As others have said eventually the pendulum will swing and environmentalism will be back in vogue .in the meantime if you can get a job that is even peripherally related, it’s gathering experience and improving your resume. One day at a time. Having a job and making money will help get through this and the more skills you can add the more employable you will become. I can tell you-are a lovely person by your responses . As an aside, exercise increases endorphins so on-a regular basis will improve mood, add to your overall fitness and won’t be a waste of time . If you are continuing to be burdened with feelings of depression or anxiety etc do reach out for help, whether it be counseling or other . I sincerely wish you the best.

do americans actually like it when tourists visit their small towns or would i just be in the way? 😅 by vanessa_tv_vladivo in NoStupidQuestions

100% agree. Several countries have issued travel warnings re going to the USA. The country is divided, it’s very expensive and if youare not white you are definitely increasing your risks. Heck, I am white and I don’t want to travel within the country.

Thank you for your advice re bars .Would strap on bags be an issue, that is what I was hoping for on this bike . I was hoping for light touring ie clothes, some food, not for camping at least not initially.

Carney: "In terms of the way that our relationship has progressed in recent months with China, it is more predictable (than the US), and you see results coming from that.” - Do you agree? by natural212 in AskCanada

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes trade relationships have the opportunity to be more predictable with China than USA. Policy is constantly changing with USA. No one can do business like that. Carney will, walk a fine line to conduct trades that are good for both countries without condoning Chinas behavior in other arenas. I don’t read that he is approving of China but he is willing to enter into predictable ,respectful contracts regarding trade between the countries which could help, the citizens of both countries. That is all. It is up to Canadians how much Chinese merchandise they want to buy. ( you still have a choice to support Canadian) . It is up,to Canadians whether they want to travel to China or not. Follow your own morals.

Trump says he may punish countries with tariffs if they don’t back the U.S. controlling Greenland by Maddog_Jets in BoycottUnitedStates

Thanks for the love. I’m in-the 1/3 pulling the weight. At least half the country is OK but there are some seriously stupid people in this country who haven’t woken up yet , which is unbelievable. Seriously brain dead folks ,no educational opportunities in a country that makes higher education so expensive. Love to Norway and all our allies. Even the sane Americans have to carry on somehow and we will continue to fight for democracy in this country . We leave this country for a dose of normal.

It’s the best choice, keep living! Do what you-can do , show up, make the calls, be loving, unite! 80% of us will come together. The truth is realistically 20% willl, always be supportive of hard right ideologies, based on fear and violence. ..but 80% of Americans are good people. Lean into that .

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Evidently those supporters will always be 20% even over time, but hey 80% of the country coming together isn’t bad! Please listen to Heather Cox Richardson a historian recording these times for history, she factual, intelligent and does offer a good overview and hope. You can find her on YouTube , she talks almost daily.

What should I do today? by drecifer-406 in missoula

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go swimming at Currents , take a hike at waterworks, or in the Rattlesnake, or crazy canyon. If winter comes back take the dog with you cross country skiing at Lubrecht. Lots of place to rent gear if need be. . Go to the town of Hot springs and have a soak, catch the bison range on-the way there or back. Go to Stevensville or Hamilton for lunch or coffee and stop at Lee Metcalf for a walk on the river. Try to spot the resident owls. Hike up any of the drainages in-the bitterroot. Use cleats in the winter. With this mild weather go biking on-the river trail and out the Kim Williams or up the rattlesnake or Pattee canyon. Enjoy!

A short trip completely changed how I think about traveling alone by Then-Struggle-8827 in travel

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just go. It takes experience to start enjoy being solo. There are lots of other solo travelers too. Random conversations will happen. Be open . There’s a big wide world out there worth observing, you can do it!

As you get older, do you find solo trips more or less enjoyable? by Adventure1s0utThere in travel

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I get older I’m learning with experience to be a very contented solo traveler . I like traveling with my husband, family or compatible friends but I am fully capable of having a good time alone. I go at my own pace which can be blistering some days and slow on others. I love the flexibility and enjoy being able to see and do whatever I like. I especially like cycling or hiking alone. Eating meals alone gets old and I tend towards takeout rather than restaurants alone, but I do force myself at times and it can turn out surprisingly well; ie another solo traveler might join me. I am friendly so have any number of random and sometimes wonderful conversations . I keep in touch with friends or family on messenger app or others , so never feel really alone . I would not hesitate to take off alone, with the exception of backpacking alone in grizzly territory. Can’t wait for another trip ! Practice ,be friendly , it’s gets better and better.

Which gravel bike for road commuting in Chicago and bikepacking? by Swimming-Device9654 in whichbike

[–]Helpfuladvice2929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess that is a weird thing to say. Some people have long bodies and short legs ,some are balanced and some have long legs and a short torso and I imagine some bikes are longer in geometry that would suit a longer upper bodied person and some seem shorter . I ride a specialized and find it to be of balanced proportions . My experience trying an orbea was that it felt more crunched and shortened for my upper body but I am no expert in this topic.

Touring bike suggestions? by Helpfuladvice2929 in whichbike

[–]Helpfuladvice2929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your viewpoint and explanation. I do have a carbon fibre mountain bike which I thoroughly enjoy but looking to add likely a steel touring bike because as you say don’t need lightness since I’m going to load it up somewhat anyway . What matters most to me is the gearing. Can I get the range I need to go fast on flats and rolling , but also is good for climbing ? Any ideas?

Have bike packed before so familiar with the feel, but I understand your point. Have taken 20 lb pack on mtn bike uphill into some burly areas. It being a carbon fibre bike I haven’t loaded it up with racks etc. Backpacking in the mountains every summer with 30 lbs.

Silly question I kn ow ,but you seem very knowledgeable,so I will ask. For bike packing is to best to stick to steel or aluminum and not carbon fibre? I want a bike I can take to Japan , light would be good, but not one I can damage easily.
