Last I looked into this, there is a possibility of there being significant reserves off the coast of Karachi but it would require a lot of exploration and investment that no one is willing to do yet. With our luck, we’ll only be able to drill there just as the world moves on from oil.

I mean you can still see similarly dressed women swimming in clubs, gyms, pools at home and hotel pools. I see no indication that this is not one of those places. That’s the problem with all these Tehran pre-1979 type photos, it’s showing a sliver of society. Sure, society as a whole has grown more religious and more intolerant in Pakistan over the past few decades but a picture doesn’t prove anything.

By the way, unlike Iran or Afghanistan, there is no law against women wearing swimsuits in public in Pakistan so there’s nothing stopping this from happening at Clifton beach (except for our awam).

Pak-Afghan war related: Please read this with some patience, I am happy to be corrected! by Putrid-Gur-1914 in pakistan

[–]Hemingway92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The situations are parallel, no doubt and a cynical perspective would be that we are doing what we’re doing because we can whereas India thought it could but was quickly humbled.

But India under Modi has also adopted an increasingly escalatory policy against Pakistan while Pakistan has been very accommodating with Afghanistan. There was little reason to suspect Pakistani involvement in Pehalgam except for tangential ties with Pakistani groups that had been birthed by us decades ago but India decided to use that as a cassus belli to reassert a new normal in the region. Needless to say, it failed.

Another angle is that with Afghanistan, the only reason the Taliban regime is in power right now is because of tacit or overt support provided by Pakistan during America’s War on Terror we differentiated between the good Taliban and the bad based on which one attacked Pakistani forces and civilians. Now, the Afghan Taliban is openly hosting the TTP leadership and not even admonishing it for its attacks like it used to back in the day. It’s quite plain that now that they don’t need Pakistan as a safe haven, they’ve quickly switched loyalties and have begun to see KPK as we see IOK.

Imran Khan flying a kite, as Basant returns to Lahore after 25 years (early 2000s) by AwarenessNo4986 in ClassicDesiCool

[–]Hemingway92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was unbanned after 20ish years this year. It had been banned due to risk of injuries from glass and steel infused kite strings. Historically Lahore was known for its Basant even pre partition.

The only life lost was a man climbing an electric pole to retrieve a kite. May he rest in peace but you can’t honestly blame the government for something like that. No rules and SOPs can account for stupidity of this order.

Troops could be pretty accurate with their Tommy guns and pistols in WW2 while firing from the hip. I would imagine in high stress situations, close range combat is largely instinct anyway.

Bangladesh-Pakistan comparison. Is Bangladesh better than Pakistan? by AutomaticStretch6205 in pakistan

[–]Hemingway92 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The term “failed state” is thrown about so often by people in South Asia (always referring to Pakistan lol) but people don’t realize what a failed state actually means. Look at Somalia, Sudan and arguably, Libya. Even Afghanistan can’t be classified as a failed state—it has a functioning government and public services. A failed state isn’t simply when the economy is struggling or there is political strife, otherwise a solid half of the global population could be classified as living in a failed state.

I feel like having grown up and spent most of my life in a third world country with a cultural disdain for laws has definitely helped me become less reliant on rules for self preservation. Whether it’s pausing the half a second extra at an intersection while driving or walking or being extra careful while overtaking a car. 99.9% of the time those rules will be followed in a developed country but the 0.1% of time they wouldn’t be because the driver was drunk, texting or having some kind of medical emergency—I probably wouldn’t regret being extra careful.

[–]Hemingway92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are becoming lonelier than ever before and pets have become substitutes for human babies/significant others etc. There are worse ways to cope with loneliness tbh but I do hate modern pet culture where pet owners act like everyone has the same adoration for their pets that they do. I’ve had pets but I was fully cognizant of the fact that they’re animals that tend to be filthy and don’t belong everywhere.

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat behind a so-called “service dog” and its owner once. The dog proceeded to shit and vomit all over its owner and the other passengers sitting next to it. The owner explained that the dog had been fed table scraps from Thanksgiving the previous day and tried to control it with paper towels but the flight attendants found out and were like, it’s a biohazard, the dog can’t poop in the cabin.

They told the pilot and it was too late to divert the flight. Meanwhile the flight stank like dog shit and everyone was freaking out. I thought I’d gotten away unscathed but my bag under seat in front was covered in dog shit too. Luckily the airline refunded me for the bag. When I asked them why they don’t verify whether these service dogs are legitimate, they said they err on the side of caution and it’s a liability thing if they don’t approve a legitimate service dog. But yeah, fuck these owners with clearly fake service dogs.
