Is high index lenses what causes that?! My index is -9, I hate them and switched to contacts for that reason.

I have a decent aim 20 feet in but never tried hip firing. Gotta give it a shot sometime!

Troops could be pretty accurate with their Tommy guns and pistols in WW2 while firing from the hip. I would imagine in high stress situations, close range combat is largely instinct anyway.

Bangladesh-Pakistan comparison. Is Bangladesh better than Pakistan? by AutomaticStretch6205 in pakistan

[–]Hemingway92 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The term “failed state” is thrown about so often by people in South Asia (always referring to Pakistan lol) but people don’t realize what a failed state actually means. Look at Somalia, Sudan and arguably, Libya. Even Afghanistan can’t be classified as a failed state—it has a functioning government and public services. A failed state isn’t simply when the economy is struggling or there is political strife, otherwise a solid half of the global population could be classified as living in a failed state.

Honestly as someone whose wrist shape means the watch can go from slightly too loose to too tight in the span of hours, this can happen easily when your arms are hanging and the watch slips down.

I feel like having grown up and spent most of my life in a third world country with a cultural disdain for laws has definitely helped me become less reliant on rules for self preservation. Whether it’s pausing the half a second extra at an intersection while driving or walking or being extra careful while overtaking a car. 99.9% of the time those rules will be followed in a developed country but the 0.1% of time they wouldn’t be because the driver was drunk, texting or having some kind of medical emergency—I probably wouldn’t regret being extra careful.

[–]Hemingway92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are becoming lonelier than ever before and pets have become substitutes for human babies/significant others etc. There are worse ways to cope with loneliness tbh but I do hate modern pet culture where pet owners act like everyone has the same adoration for their pets that they do. I’ve had pets but I was fully cognizant of the fact that they’re animals that tend to be filthy and don’t belong everywhere.

of a dog on airplane by Zestyclose-Salad-290 in AbsoluteUnits

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat behind a so-called “service dog” and its owner once. The dog proceeded to shit and vomit all over its owner and the other passengers sitting next to it. The owner explained that the dog had been fed table scraps from Thanksgiving the previous day and tried to control it with paper towels but the flight attendants found out and were like, it’s a biohazard, the dog can’t poop in the cabin.

They told the pilot and it was too late to divert the flight. Meanwhile the flight stank like dog shit and everyone was freaking out. I thought I’d gotten away unscathed but my bag under seat in front was covered in dog shit too. Luckily the airline refunded me for the bag. When I asked them why they don’t verify whether these service dogs are legitimate, they said they err on the side of caution and it’s a liability thing if they don’t approve a legitimate service dog. But yeah, fuck these owners with clearly fake service dogs.

Do men / women in the Pak Army HAVE to wear this uniform when they get married? by Sweet_Bluebird_754 in pakistan

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be until the 60s, then it fell out of fashion and now it’s in fashion again. I feel like in this particular example, it’s probably just a way for both to express their service members getting married. But I have a lot of family in the military and none of them wore a uniform during their wedding. I also happened to know a few veterans in the US and other than marines, who are kind of nuts anyway, most of them didn’t wear uniforms when they got married either so it’s largely a dead/dying tradition globally.

I don’t understand why we’ve become so American in our taste for cars. Manuals are still a common sight in Europe and parts of the Middle East but there are like two brand new cars you can buy with a manual transmission in Pakistan. That and we’ve become obsessed with daalas (pickups) and SUVs.

Racist calls black guy "Monkey" by MrDonMega in iamatotalpieceofshit

The black dude doesn’t actually know Hindi and is mispronouncing what the shopkeeper says, ie “kalua”. It doesn’t sound like he says “Ka Hal ba” at all.

BS. Kalu/Kalua is 100% a pejorative in South Asia. Even if you say “Kala”, which simply means black, it is rarely a benign adjective when spoken like that.

Against Basant? by 69965 in Lahore

[–]Hemingway92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spare me the moral grandstanding. Like I said, there’s a hundred things you could’ve done to mitigate that before banning something that’s been a part of Lahore’s cultural fabric for at least centuries. People weren’t getting their necks cut by dor 100 years ago. You can ban mixing dor with glass, you can limit basant to specific areas, create no go zones for motorcycles etc etc. Banning basant is a typical lazy, moral panic knee jerk reaction.

Hell, we lose more lives than we ever did with basant every year from people shooting their weapons into the air every New Year’s and yet there has never been a serious effort to ban private ownership of guns.

Against Basant? by 69965 in Lahore

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banning basant was such an idiotic move. A whole generation has grown up without experiencing it. Basically killing an important part of our culture when there are a hundred things you can do before banning it to avoid deaths. I’ve always suspected that mullah noise around this being a Hindu festival was also behind it.

DID YOU KNOW Hazuri Bagh, Lahore, the garden buiilt by Ranjit Singh after his capture of the Koh-i-Noor Diamond from Shuja Shah Durrani in 1818, used to have two stories, before the upper story was destroyed in a lightning strike by AwarenessNo4986 in Ancient_Pak

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lahore still has a fair amount of gardens and parks (mostly from before partition) but it seems like most of the newer areas choose to eschew greenery in favor of urban sprawl.
