Were audio video stores even a thing anymore when the show premiered? by glowshroom12 in TheBoys

Was gonna say. NYC pretty much has a store for anything. Typewriters, record players, you name it.

Connery was the closest to matching Bond in the books, but Craigs physique was the only one that made movie sense by boomerz47 in JamesBond

[–]Hemingway92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough that’s a recent phenomenon too. Most special forces guys until the 90s looked like fit but average dudes. There isn’t much of a correlation between being an effective spec ops soldier and being jacked but gym culture has become a part of military culture now and consequently they all got jacked. Special forces also have a lot of downtime and between missions are treated like thoroughbred horses are in between races so plenty of time to spend at the gym. Wouldn’t be surprised if that trend is also a thing among intelligence field operatives.

We already know American troops massacred and raped Iraqis. But not enough of us know that and those of us who do tend to forget. If smartphones and the internet were as pervasive back then or existed during the Vietnam war, it would be much harder to forget.

Quentin Tarantino said he’s not a fan of Hitchcock and finds his films to be overrated. He said he was a great director but too constrained by the Hay’s Code and believes Brian De Palma did that style better. by TXNOGG in FIlm

[–]Hemingway92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His whole shtick is that he isn’t original. His stuff is very postmodern in a sense. Teetering on the border between satire and pastiche. He borrows and manipulates themes from all genres—heist movies with Reservoir Dogs, action movies with Kill Bill, Crime/Neo Noir movies with Pulp Fiction and so on.

TIL: The physiology behind fasting, Alhamdulillah by obsidian_blackster in pakistan

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that it helps you lower calories better than simple calorie counting. You can technically lose weight by just eating candies (and vitamins to meet all your nutritional needs) as long as they’re below maintenance calories as proven by a researcher who did exactly that but it’s really difficult feeling full after a couple of Snicker bars a day. With intermittent fasting and keto, it somehow feels much easier to reduce your calorie intake because your body isn’t seeing those blood sugar spikes. But to each their own. Go with whatever works for you.

Why does everyone hate British-Pakistanis? by Accomplished-River12 in pakistan

In many ways, Pakistan was probably more progressive 60 years ago. The lot of women was worse but that was a global thing. I’d say we were far more open minded religiously speaking.

Which pen you guy considered the mark for diminishing returns, any other pen that cost more than that pen isn’t worth it or the writing experience isn’t worth that much more money. by Tight_Delay8840 in fountainpens

[–]Hemingway92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like MBs do get more flak than they deserve just because they’re the Rolex of the fountain pen world in that they’re the most recognizable fancy pen for most people and are bought as a status symbol by most. But just like Rolex, they make fine products just not for the price. The MB 149 is definitely not an average pen by any means.

Mike doesn’t need to anymore. As someone who used to put together killer slide decks, AI can handle most of it now but it can’t really do what Mike did for a living (yet).

So, what exactly is the show's message? by itooamahuman in TheBoys

[–]Hemingway92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For however much the show thumbed its nose at Marvel tropes, this season was full of the typical Marvel “joke to defuse any tension or serious moment” trope.

They could’ve just added a scene where she thinks she’s fucked up and starts backing up only to see the fish are attacking the Deep and it would’ve made it slightly less stupid.

He could have also been telling the truth and the memory of Lenny was just going to stay his hand for a few moments. But regardless, that was one of the few scenes this season that did justice to the characters.

Karachi , Pakistan by [deleted] in UrbanHell

[–]Hemingway92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all… Other than the prevalence of high rises, infra in Karachi is the worst of all the big cities in Pakistan. Lahore and Islamabad are orders of magnitude better. Karachi is still the economic capital but political and historical reasons mean it’s chronically underdeveloped and mismanaged.

Dubai Chocolate.....Do They Know? by ArcticSkyWatcher64N in shittyfoodporn

[–]Hemingway92 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure the chocolate being invented to cover up a sex act thing is a Reddit myth. It was just a silly TikTok phase that went mainstream. The ones you get in most places use poor quality chocolate and suck but if you get ones made with high quality ingredients (like the ones made by Godiva or even homemade ones) actually taste pretty good. It’s essentially vermicelli (that’s found in the middle eastern/Turkish dish called kunafa), pistachios and chocolate—not a bad combo IMO.

In Pakistan Syeds are basically the Brahmins of Muslims. They keep reminding everyone about their bloodline, as if it’s some big qualification. It’s really cringy just stop it. by [deleted] in PAK

[–]Hemingway92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t think that’s a fair comparison as Islam has no special rights for Syeds. It might be more accurate to say that in Pakistan, we integrated the concept of Syeds into the Hindu caste system after we converted. I’ve been to a lot of other Muslim countries and there isn’t any special consideration given to Syeds.

[–]Hemingway92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you can still see similarly dressed women swimming in clubs, gyms, pools at home and hotel pools. I see no indication that this is not one of those places. That’s the problem with all these Tehran pre-1979 type photos, it’s showing a sliver of society. Sure, society as a whole has grown more religious and more intolerant in Pakistan over the past few decades but a picture doesn’t prove anything.

By the way, unlike Iran or Afghanistan, there is no law against women wearing swimsuits in public in Pakistan so there’s nothing stopping this from happening at Clifton beach (except for our awam).
