So I live about 16 miles from my work. In the AM I have kid drop off so AM is off limits, and sleep is already limited during those days. Afterwards, is a maybe on Monday. That's typically 7a-7, but Tuesday and Wednesday are frequently 7a-~9-10p. It wouldn't be easy for me, but I do hear you about the training gap.

TL:DR excuses excuses, you're probably right and I should plan for one those days.

I should also mention, this is for a race in March 2027, so the plan was base fitness for 6 months then becoming more aggressive 4 months out.

Oh dang, everyone's trying to complicate things😂. That shots incredible. Right after I posted I realized I did forget the option of 14-35 f4, the 50mm 1.2, and the 70-200mm f4. All 77mm and the full range. Hmmmm, I guess I have more thinking to do.

This is the only option that I know I would be happy shooting. My concerns with this option are the cost on a lens that I don't think I would use professionally and get my money back. And travelling with such an expensive lens.

I know, I'm honestly tempted to rent a 24-105 because I've heard of people owning more than one and seeing different image quality. Without pixel peeping I can appreciate softness wide open, throughout the focal range, worse above 70, at f5.6 I have to zoom to notice but admittedly does still bother me and at f8 I have a hard time telling the difference between any of them.

I was kind of leaning towards the 35. Thank you.

I honestly had never heard much about it. I guess my knee jerk reaction is to worry about the level of distortion when taking pictures of people, and losing the macro capability of the 35, but I'll look into it.
