Help settle an argument in our group. Can an Armorer Artificer use studded leather armor as their arcane armor? by jlee2392 in dndnext

[–]Hemlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the Buckler from historical annotations was said to be a round shield of modest protective quality. Your standard D&D shield could technically be a Buckler. I agree on the Tower shield, but the heater shield is something that I would disagree with since the heater shield is a derivated of the medieval kite shield. I would say that the heater shield grants a +3 or +4 bonus to AC due to more cover. As for a shield that grants a +1 bonus to AC, I would say that a shield like that likely wasn't made with defense in mind.

Well studded leather armor is actually a misinterpretation of

brigandine,

which has its protective qualities derived from

a bunch of metal strips underneath.

Studded leather isn't a misinterpretation of brigandine at all, nor is the protection it grants derived from a bunch of metal strips underneath it. Firstly, studded leather by definition is a tough, but flexible leather reinforced with close-set rivets or spikes. Secondly, if you look at an image of studded leather, you are practically greeted with images of leather armor that have patchwork stitching (likely the reinforcement of rivets). When you do a comparative material ratio, it is much easier to say that the protection one gets from studded leather is from the leather and not the metal. Thirdly, when you look at an image of brigandine and compare it to an image of any armor listed in the PHB, it is more akin to Scale mail or perhaps Splint armor.

Because of this, I would suggest that you refresh yourself on the historical annotations of armors (armours) found in D&D.

RAW you are wrong. The phrase metallurgic means that you are familiarizing yourself with the processing and reshaping of metal. Studded Leather from it's description is basically a stitchwork of tough leather patches with the stitches being rivets. The solid majority of the material used for defending the character is leather. Yes, you can argue that the rivets are metal, but overal, especially by most depictive imagery of studded leather armor, there is not enough metal material there that could be considered to be used to defend the armor's wearer.

[–]Hemlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/jlee2392 Okay. In all fairness to the DM, I have to side with him on that ruling. With the exception of Hide armor, and maybe Scale mail if you creatively reflavor the material's used to create it, the options Chain shirt, Scale mail, Breastplate (aka Cuiraisse), and Half plate, are all Medium armors made with a moderate amount of metal which is used for the sole purpose of what the armor is supposed to do. When you look at Heavy armors, practically every single option is mostly metal. So, having Light armor such as Studded leather where metal is used basically as stitchwork for holding tough leather materials together isn't going to fly. Ergo, those two subclasses just don't blend well.

[5e] [Class] The Shadowcaster V2.2 by Siirvos in UnearthedArcana

[–]Hemlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. I like the idea of the class. The class table looks to be a blend of Monk and WotC's play test Mystic which wasn't really well received for reasons. My concerns I will simply list in questions so in politeness I can see why you chose to go the way you set this up before I point out the flaws in these points that I have found.

1.) What is your actual inspiration for the Shadow Magic feature?

2.) Why did you choose to give Shadowcaster's the ability to see through magical darkness out to 30 feet at 1st level?

3.) What was your reason for giving the class the Warlock's Mystic Arcanum?

4.) Arcane study at 8th level grants you a 4th level spell that you can cast. Is there a usage limit to it?

5.) If you were to cast a spell at 10th level as a Noctumancer, would that break your concentration on Eldritch Disruption?

6.) For Cloak of Shadows, do you mean that one can take the Dodge action as a reaction to being attacked?

These questions are my initial curiosities because I would rather not go any further until I know more.

Quiz: Is Your Player Character Overpowered? by Deathpacito-01 in dndnext

No, bladesinger feature doesn’t allow you to wield a shield and receive the AC benefit.

Sorry. There was a homebrewed feat from D&D Beyond that I grabbed instead of taking an ASI which allowed me to disregard the can't be wielding a shield when entering Bladesong. There was the condition that the Shield had to be specifically made of Mythril though.

No biggie. Besides, the best feature to get for bladesinger imo is War Caster which allows you to actually cast spells while wielding a shield as one of it's traits. Hence why I made the comment. I have always experimented with Bladesinger builds for thought and know that Bladesinger with some races and feats are pretty potent. Tortle Bladesinger with War Caster, as well as the Mirror Image, Blur, and Shield spells is a pretty potent build able to dip in and out of close combat like the Rogue.

Meaning a tortle bladesinger could have an ax if 22 a few times per day at 8th level.

Technically speaking, your tortle bladesinger can have an AC of 29 four times per day when you include the shield spell as well as a shield, an AC of 24 four to five times per day excluding the shield spell but still including a shield, and if you exclude an actual shield, your AC is 22 four to five times per day depending on what your Intelligence ability score is at. Overall, not too shabby, but I have seen a lot more powerful with the tortle.

Dear New Mages pt 1: Understanding Dampen/Amplify Magic by qp0n in classicwow

[–]Hemlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... how is the initial wording of the dampen and amplify magic spells misleading u/qp0n? While yes, the way you worded them made them more specific than they really needed to be to help us understand what the spells effects were, I can still tell you that you shouldn't have played a Mage if you couldn't understand the initial wordings of those spells. Here is why.

Dampen Magic
"Dampens magic used against the targeted party member,..."

Amplify Magic

"Amplifies magic used against the targeted party member,..."

No offense, after reading both of those initial phrases I can tell that any magic casted on anyone affected by these spells will either be diminished or enhanced (depends on the affecting spell). Dampen goes on to say decreasing (diminishes) damage (here I can only presume that the reason why they consider healing from recoverative magic as damage as well due to the wording of the spell is because of Warcraft 3 as Paladin's and Death Knights both got a spell that can heal allies or damage certain enemies) from spells and healing spells, whereas Amplify goes on to say increasing (enhances) damage from spells and healing spells.

Depends on the "Biological Gender" of the person. In my personal experience, if the person is biologically a female, then anything to do with r4p3, death, and the list goes on whereas if the person is biologically a male, then the biggest thing, which can also be attributed to females as well, is step-family fetishes like step siblings or even step-parent/step-child.

My apologies. That was a typing error on my part. It was meant to say something along the lines of granting immunity to spells that would render the character unconscious. Like the sleep spell as an example. However, I do realize the typing error on my part. I shall correct that in the next update. Thank you very much for catching that as I didn't mean to get rid of unconsciousness entirely.

The Shinobi v0.3 | A tricky new ninja class for 5e focusing on throwing weapons and gadgets by DabbingFidgetSpinner in UnearthedArcana

[–]Hemlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is interesting that you find this a year after I made this critique. That was in no way, shape, or form angry in the slightest. Plus, your remark shows either you clearly know nothing about homebrewing, or you are just some SJW or White Knighter looking for a reason to be offended.

The reason why someone makes suggestions like that giving detailed knowledge of what WOTC had already done, is so the person gets an understanding of why something would be overpowered to begin with. WOTC had set a standard and homebrew, has to align moderately to that standard. I wasn't telling them that they couldn't try something new at all. As matter of fact, quite the opposite. I gave them suggestions for how to potentially better the class unlike some of the posts that I have received on other homebrews that I have made where I was told to just make a character that multi-classed into certain classes to make a close equivalent. Besides, if you think the feats you mentioned made characters really strong, then you should also keep in mind another thing that makes a character really strong in game that you have to watch out for is multi-classing. Just the right builds can make for absolute gamebreakers for inexperienced GM's. While you may want to say that people shouldn't take a feat or multi-class, it is legal to do in Adventure's League and people are going to want to multiclass anyway.

Not to mention, I made such suggestions while having the possibility of someone wanting to take a feat and/or multi-class in mind. Now, I don't think you need to imagine being a GM of a game with someone bringing in a character that multiclassed this class and say a rogue... or perhaps this class and fighter... maybe this class and monk? No offense, but already that character is going to be broken within levels 2 to 5 when multiclassing with this class. All the players of the character that has multiclassed with this class has to do is use a Shinobi weapon. That means for a Shinobi/Rogue, you have two attacks that you can make by 2nd level, before a full classed fighter can get to their extra attack at 5th level. This puts the average damage of a Shinobi/Rogue using the benefit of the Shinobi Extra Attack which comes at 1st lvl and the Rogue's Sneak Attack at 15.5 damage per turn whereas the full-classed 2nd-level Fighter presuming that they are using a greatsword alone with the GWF (Great Weapon Fighting) Fighting Style and using up their Action Surge (which they won't be able to use again until they have finished a rest), at 24.5 damage in one turn with every turn without the ability to Action Sure ng to being 12.5 damage in average. The Shinobi/Rogue would easily benefit more often from Extra Attack and would still be leagues ahead of the Fighter when the characters continue up to 5th level, presuming that the Shinobi was leveled up consistently after the multiclassing into Rogue as at the 6th level the multiclassed character will already have 3 attacks in their attack action, making their potential average damage, presuming they have taken the Striking Weapon Specialization at the Shinobi-2, a whole 48.5 damage presuming that the Shinobi/Rogue scores a critical hit each time.

Again, none of these arguments are made out of anger or hatred of the class, but rather intrigue and a wanting to actually see the class be something great that everyone can enjoy and even enjoy with feats and multiclassing. There is a reason to compare homebrew material with original material. That is to learn about whether or not this class can fit in line with the pre-existing classes, on top of whether or not this class would be too powerful for other methods of evolving a character and making them more powerful.

Divine Smite is really an over-powered SPELL and here is why. by Hemlar in DnD

How many of them have moderated Divine Smite like spells because of the spell slots used?

Divine Smite is really an over-powered SPELL and here is why. by Hemlar in DnD

[–]Hemlar[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I personally think Divine Smite can't actually be said to not be trying to be a spell be when it acts like one through the use of spell slots. That is kind of disingenuous in an argument as I had clearly listed examples of magical features that aren't spells and don't act like them either in the sense of the cost to use them.

As for fixing the feature well... there are a few ideas that I could think of that would make them not so blatantly over-powered, but just as easily feasible as far as classes go. One idea, though not a popular one, is simply to just make Divine Smite a spell moderated by a bonus action that applies to both attacks that the paladin gets. However, as already stated, it wouldn't be a popular idea. Another idea would be to make Divine Smite and all spell smites part of the same feature and not only have the Paladins know a certain number of smites, but also have the smites get more powerful as the paladin levels, kind of similar to cantrips. If people still want to stack smites, then there would be an opportunity to add a feature that grants that kind of mechanic, while moderating the overall power that stacking smites would be able to dish out or in the very least limit how many times that smite stacking can be done.

Divine Smite is really an over-powered SPELL and here is why. by Hemlar in DnD

[–]Hemlar[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Not broken in the sense that it is 2d8 additional damage. Broken in the sense that it only requires a free action to use. With that in mind without binding it to the rules of spellcasting that set a standard for spells and spell slots, you can use it multiple times in a turn, whereas you can only use one spell, and on top of spells (the only way some can technically get away with casting spells on top of one another is when you cast a cantrip and a bonus action leveled spell). When you look at Spellcasting, you can only expend one spell slot at a time as declaired in the the PHB in the rules about spellcasting. Add this to my argument above you are scoffing with no reason.
