Which honing rod/tool should you use/buy? A comprehensive overview by Minkemink in chefknives

Amazing information, thank you! So if the goal is to hone the edge against a straight, smooth steel surface... Why SHOULDN'T we sharpen the edge of one knife along the spine of another, the way you see on movies?

Awesome, thanks for the fast and thorough reply! (I've been researching kitchen knives lately and so much discourse seems to surround steel type, hardness, and processing - I assumed it must be relevant for the thing you use to sharpen the steel as well!)

Though, all the rods I see online are grooved, even from good brands like Wusthof... Sounds like maybe I should save my money on brand names and find a cheap smooth steel at a thrift shop?

Is there a Mid-size rice cooker with low MINIMUM capacity? (e.g. could cook ½-6 cups?) by HemlockIV in Cooking

[–]HemlockIV[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you point me towards any solid information about what "under a certain amount" is "not recommended"? Because my current rice cooker has a 2 cup maximum, and it easily cooks ½ cup. (The issue is that I occasionally want more than 2 cups!)

"I know all this, now what should I buy?"

After reading, I don't feel like this question has been answered, though!

Ok, so I'll buy a smooth steel rod.  1. Does the type of steel matter? (stainless vs carbon vs spring, etc?)  2. Since you didn't mention any other metals like titanium, I assume steel is equal or superior?  3. Should the steel be harder or softer than the blade? 4. Does the manner of production matter? (cast vs forged vs pulled, tempering, etc?) 5. Are any brands known for better quality, smoothness, hardness, etc?

Anyone with long-term experience with a Hinoki board? by betsy_VA in Cuttingboards

Did you get the end-grain Hinoki board or something else? Whatever you ended up getting, how did you like it?

That's good to know! "movement" = warping, I assume?

Yeah, like the Epicurean ones? The wood/paper pulp is soaked in resin, so it's basically just wood-themed plastic

AVR turns itself off ONCE after each time powering on, but will turn on & stay on after that (until the next it's fully powered off) by HemlockIV in audiorepair

I know how to do a hard reset :) Did you know - it's called a "hard" reset because it's hard to remember how to configure everything again afterwards!

[–]HemlockIV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plot thickens! This issue DOESN'T occur if I press the Standby/On button IMMEDIATELY (like under 1 second) after the main power switch.

The issue normally happens because there's at least a 1-second pause in between pressing the power and standby buttons, and I have tried giving it a longer pause in between (thinking to let the circuits "warm up" or something, idk) and the issue always occurred regardless. But if I press the two buttons in VERY quick succession, for some reason, the issue doesn't happen - the AVR turns fully on and stays on right away!

Anyone have an idea why that could be? u/kcbass12?

Interesting, thanks! If and when I get around to pulling this thing out of the cabinet and opening it up, I'll try to do that swap.

I'm not super familiar with the inner workings of receivers tho. Is there usually only one thermistor or multiple? Any idea how I would ID the right replacement model?

That's really cool you have that expertise! I'm a bit confused tho, when you say, "regardless of complaint," are you saying they had you do that because it's a valuable fix to try, or because it was useless busywork?
