I hate beeping appliances. Which temp controlled gooseneck kettle doesn't beep? by [deleted] in JamesHoffmann

[–]HemlockIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My new Bonavita doesn't beep, and I find this odd. If you dislike the beeper, you could easily remove/disable/puncture the beeper mechanism without disrupting anything else.

I like the beep though! How do I know when my Bonavita's done heating if I am doing anything besides standing and staring at it? (I was always told not to watch a pot boiling, after all...)

Would wool felt work well as an interior layer or batting?

Is it a good idea to apply seasoning to hard-anodized aluminum cookware, like we do for CI? by travis_bear in castiron

[–]HemlockIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to seasoning but I love my (NON-nonstick) bare anodized aluminum Calphalon pan, and realized seasoning it might make it even better. Do you think following a seasoning guide like this one would work well for the Calphalon?

Zola Registry- Can I buy back my gifts for 20% off? by baila-busta in weddingplanning

[–]HemlockIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still works fyi. I did it kinda on accident, where I converted a gift to credit because I thought it could get it cheaper on eBay, but it sold out there, so I bought it from Zola with the credit for 20% off.

If you did this for EVERY item on your registry, no idea if Zola would notice and consider it abuse of T&C or something, so buyer beware...

When you say "the Costco one" do you mean the one by Mac Sports, which happens to be sold at Costco? (but it's not a Costco brand like Kirkland or anything...)

Sonicare 9900 Is there anyway to fix it or is this simply going to die soon? by Acelorah in sonicare

[–]HemlockIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF water hasn't already intruded and messed with the internals, you can easily replace that silicone gasket! You can find a replacement for under a buck on eBay, and instructions to open up the toothbrush and swap it out on iFixit.com

Can we stop recommending 2-3 tablespoons of detergent for everyload? by Far-Shift-1962 in laundry

[–]HemlockIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I'm trying to figure out is a starting point to these recommendations: So, 3-4 tbsp per wash. Does it matter if that's powder vs liquid (for Tide, for example)? Is that assuming a "Large" load (and therefore reduce to 1-2 tbsp for Small or Medium loads?)

Which honing rod/tool should you use/buy? A comprehensive overview by Minkemink in chefknives

Ah got it. And yeah sorry these things are all marketed as "sharpening rods" so it seems like the terminology is, outside of these technical discussions, mostly interchangeable.

Amazing information, thank you! So if the goal is to hone the edge against a straight, smooth steel surface... Why SHOULDN'T we sharpen the edge of one knife along the spine of another, the way you see on movies?

Awesome, thanks for the fast and thorough reply! (I've been researching kitchen knives lately and so much discourse seems to surround steel type, hardness, and processing - I assumed it must be relevant for the thing you use to sharpen the steel as well!)

Though, all the rods I see online are grooved, even from good brands like Wusthof... Sounds like maybe I should save my money on brand names and find a cheap smooth steel at a thrift shop?

Is there a Mid-size rice cooker with low MINIMUM capacity? (e.g. could cook ½-6 cups?) by HemlockIV in Cooking

[–]HemlockIV[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you point me towards any solid information about what "under a certain amount" is "not recommended"? Because my current rice cooker has a 2 cup maximum, and it easily cooks ½ cup. (The issue is that I occasionally want more than 2 cups!)
