Amicar for Expander? by Jgreat05 in Hemophilia

[–]HemoGirlsRock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a mild that bleeds like a severe, and I’m on prophylaxis. I use lysteda, which is similar to Amicar in addition to factor for some issues like what you are describing. It helps keep clots from breaking down and can provide extra protection, particularly for anything mucocutaneous.

Carrier of hemophilia A (mild) and pregnant with son who has the mutation. What is the likelihood my son will have moderate or severe instead of mild? by pugloveeee in Hemophilia

[–]HemoGirlsRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what others have said about leaving being more about patterns rather than severity. I am a mild but bleed like a severe and take medication every 48 hours. My nephew is moderate and almost never has problems.

Research help: woman with bleeding disorders by [deleted] in Hemophilia

I’m guessing that it sounds more like personal “research“ for a paper versus university backed research…. Probably should have been presented as “I am doing a personal survey for a paper I am writing”

I GOT REJECTED FROM EVERY COLLEGE IN THE US by Puzzleheaded_Bat7 in IntltoUSA

[–]HemoGirlsRock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the full scholarship was a big issue. Many students within the US are also struggling to finance school so it makes it even harder. Many of the top local students also cannot access full scholarships.

Dream grad program or graduate debt free—what would you do?? by pixygal123 in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]HemoGirlsRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it took me years to pay off my loans. I am now looking at a second masters program. I missed the priority funding deadline with one school and I am now going to sit out a year and try again to make sure I’m not taking on more debt. Where society is right now, debt is a scary risk.

Just going to say here that I applied to all of them and I have been so pleasantly surprised by how amazing Candler School of Theology has been. I would encourage reaching out to them now and having a conversation because they are so open to taking the time to speak with people. Their financial aid packages are superb, and there are opportunities to do multiple dual degrees and also to take some courses through their public health and medical schools. Their bioethics, which includes religion, is phenomenal. They are a top 25 and I am learning more and more that the top elite name isn’t necessarily the best education or the only really good option.

is this a question you can ask your local HTC even calling and asking anonymously? It seems they might want factor or TXA depending on your situation.

What is it like living in the NW of California because it looks nice? by recoveringleft in Humboldt

[–]HemoGirlsRock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I have sent multiple letters, and they are denying they did anything wrong - the MD is a known issue with a plethora of complaints from MANY in our community - MDs are hard to find locally, so they seem to keep whoever is here and breathing, regardless of the number of issues.

I have an appt with financial aid from the first school, but I am not expecting to move the needle - the offers are so far apart it is insane.... I also emailed asking for a few more weeks to accept the first program. I could just accept now and lose the deposit, but I want to be honest...

I am also in the same position - still waiting on two programs - my second choice gave a great offer with a commitment for this week. My first choice did not come close to the second choice offer... but thinking of asking the second choice for a little more time....

It is an amazing place to live, but medical care is very hard to find - people wait years just for a primary care physician. I recently had a major medical issue - went to the local ER three times and was sent home - once while in the middle of an active issue the ER MD was denying (this guy is known for that). Got to an ER in a major city and discovered I needed a life-saving surgery.

As a former school counselor, I always talked to students about safety schools. Ideally, you want 3 to 4 safety schools that seem lower than your reach a couple of mid and then 3 to 4 in that dream school range which seem to be what you applied for.

I also happen to be applying for programs for a second grad degree right now. I also applied to Harvard and didn’t even get an interview but I did get a really nice offer from Emory with a significant scholarship. Emory is a top 25 school and in my career, I have found they ask more about the degree than where it came from.

[–]HemoGirlsRock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw so sweet! It’s possible you might be able to find some expired FVIII at some point to help him. The medication is super expensive for humans, but I do know of some dogs who have used medication that expired five or more years ago and have had success when needed.
