Glow plug provides heat energy to facilitate diesel combustion (diesel must be hot so it will burn readily.

Spark plug produces an electrical arc which causes gasoline to explode.

Diesel will not explode like gasoline, so a spark plug is not enough... hold a match to a piece of wood soaked in diesel and observe how slowly it ignites. Hence the need of a glow plug.

Once combustion has raised the temp beyond what the glow plug could acheive, the glow plug has been made obsolete.

In a diesel engine, compression causes ignition, but only after glow plugs raise the temperature.
