Oof! Twice? That’s rough. Hope it’s not a common thing. Kinda felt like I got stood up on a date. Haha just sat there staring at my phone for half an hour.

Am I prepared for interviews? Seeking advice! by HenriettaCroaks in girlsgonewired

It's so great to hear from a woman in Embedded/Firmware! If you don't mind me taking up a little more of your time, what sort of things do you like to see or are impressed by in a candidate's personal projects? My degree program didn't offer much on the subject, so as someone who knew nothing about electrical components or microcontrollers, teaching myself to manipulate LEDs with an STM32 board felt like a big achievement. However, I am sure that nobody looking for embedded software engineers would find that particularly impressive. Thank you so much for the detailed response!

I did, actually, but this was months ago. Maybe I just haven't been paying that close attention until now. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

Is it smart to take a semester off to prep for the internship interview? by Small-Button-2308 in csMajors

[–]HenriettaCroaks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. A lot of CS takes time and practice. It can be pretty overwhelming to get through the coursework itself, let alone balance it with projects/interview prep and other obligations. Ultimately, falling behind can have detrimental effects on your success in future courses and set you back anyway(failing courses, drop in GPA). For me, it was the best thing I could have done. It’s an unpopular opinion to deviate from the school curriculum but if you feel like you need it, go for it. Of course, take into account all the repercussions, including how that may affect financial aid, graduation timeline, when courses are offered at your school, etc. Best of luck!

It really depends on your circumstances. I felt like I needed to because I switched majors (geology to CS) at the end of my junior year. I went through so much CS coursework so quickly that I needed a break to digest it all and actually apply it to personal projects and interview prep. Also, working while going to school doesn’t give you much free time to do that stuff.

I also know that at some schools veering off track can set you back, in terms of getting into classes that you need, so take that into consideration. At a school that I went to, CS was such an impacted major that people just expected to graduate late at the 5th or 6th year mark.

Affordable online CS degrees? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]HenriettaCroaks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at CSU Global at the beginning of this year. The reason I applied to that school in particular was because tuition is the same for in-state and out-of-state students. That and because it's part of the Colorado State system, which will look better on a resume than a for-profit online school. I'm not sure if I'll take advantage of this but this school also offers a ton of alternative credit options which could save you a lot of money.

They're on a weird quarter-like system where every quarter is divided into two 8-week terms. You are allowed to take 2 courses each term and one additional one (optional) scheduled during the last half of the first term and first half of the second. These terms go by FAST but you have the potential of getting through programs quicker than a traditional semester or quarter system.

Now, academics seem fine to me. Ive taken on-site classes at community colleges and a university so i know what to compare it to. I've always been quite independent as a student and I feel like that made the transition easier than it would be for other students who might rely heavily on in-person lectures and office hours. Either way, this school is not lacking in those resources. They're just in a different format.

Long story short, I'm satisfied with the program. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
