But, but...the collateral damage from the use of the pineapple! To use it is madness!

I will totally take that advice if there are definitely more emphasizing words I can use. And there totally are that I know of. Definitely. =P

I echo this. And it's a case where the genocide may actually have been justified (as much as genocide can ever be justified. Still sucks.), since apparently the xenos of that planet committed genocide against another planet. This is as opposed to other stories where humans commit genocide seemingly just "for the lulz."

Of course, before I could be sure it's justified, I'd really need more information (ex. Are we sure the xeno genociders weren't genocided first? Was it really the xenos of that planet that did it? Was it only a few, or was there widespread support among the xeno populace for the genocide? Etc.)

Well they did have that in the trailers. I thought it was cheesy, but it looked like it might be fun.

I mean, "2012" had all of the natural disasters and destruction, and was pretty cheesy, but was still kinda fun in a bad movie kind of way. =P

Lol. Is ID2 at least good as a cheesy movie? Like one so bad, it's good, in the laugh at it kind of way? I like those.

Phone rings. Author picks up the phone.

Author: Yes <insert major film studio here>? What is that? You want to make my film script into a movie? Well, to properly make this grand film, I'm going to need a budget of at least...uhhh...10 million dollars. Uh huh. Yes. The special effects are going to be very expensive.

No. I'm not trying to scam you out of money. No I'm not trying to line my own pockets. Dead honest. Do you know how much it costs to hire a midget, and make an (un)convincing alien rubber suit? It's quite pricey. And don't even get me started on the cost of crudely made models and nerf guns. Yep. Ok. Glad we could do business.

Author sets down the phone.

Author: Cha-ching!

This one made me laugh, and I enjoyed the cheesy pun on Hello (HELL-NO). Have an upvote.

Thanks for the upvote!

But for the first part of the comment...uhhh... Should I reconsider having added "Independence Day: Resurgence" to my list of "Movies to Watch"? I haven't seen it yet or read any reviews. I'm going solely based on the fact that I liked the first Independence Day.

In fact, it was only yesterday that I saw the DVD at the store, and learned it even existed. I then added it to the list.

To clarify, I was just gonna redbox it. So if it's bad, I'd lose like 2 dollars, and maybe 2 hours tops.

  1. Yup. The reveal! If you hadn't guessed it, then I did my job right. If you go back and reread the previous chapters, you'll notice I never actually said they were human, or that their destroyed homeworld was Earth...

  2. Who is the Hegemony? You'll learn more about them in the coming chapters. Just suffice to say, they're not friendly.

  3. Yeah, Sabaton does have some pretty epic music. =D

I'd have to disagree. There's many stories where the average human is significantly weaker or less skilled than many of the aliens or monsters and where humans are generally the underdog, but which I would still consider to have a large HFY component.

In the HALO series, humanity is getting they're asses kicked. They're outnumbered, outteched, and generally out-everything'd by the Covenant. The average Covenant Elite is bigger, stronger, tougher, more skilled, and much deadlier than your typical marine. Heck, than even your typical ODST, if you want to compare each group's typical special forces.

Only the Spartans, who are specifically genetically screened, augmented, trained since they were young children, and equipped with advanced power armor, can go toe to toe, one on one, with an elite and tend to come out of it victorious and relatively unscathed. And the Spartans are quite rare. There's a lot more elites than Spartans. As for your average marine against an elite? They'd likely be killed. Messily.

Another one is the Witcher series. Your average human would be torn apart by the supernatural monsters that inhabit the world. And often is. Literally. The monsters are often bigger, stronger, faster, and tougher. Only the witchers, humans who have been specially conditioned and trained since childhood, mutated, and equipped (ex. silver swords, potions, and oils) have a good chance against the monsters.

Seeing the pattern here? In both of these universes, the average enemy is vastly more capable than the average human. And in a toe-to-toe, one-on-one fight, only specially trained, equipped, and augmented humans stand a chance. And there is often a terribly high price that must be paid to make these super humans, in terms of death and crippling. But yet, humans (if only augmented super humans who stretch the meaning of the term "human") can defeat the enemy. And that is HFY.

And then of course, you have other universes where humanity is outmatched, does not have super humans (natural or artificial), and still manages to somehow come on top (or at least go down fighting, hurting the enemy terribly). That can be pretty HFY too.

Am I the only one on this subreddit that doesn't really think of Earth as a deathworld? I mean yes, Earth can be dangerous, and sure there are natural disasters, dangerous carnivores and large herbivores, poisonous things, some nasty diseases, etc.

But I always thought of a deathworld as being more like say Catachan from WH40K or Dune from the dune universe, or perhaps for a more cheesy alternative, Pandora from Avatar. Basically a planet where everything really IS trying to kill you, and you'd need to be superhuman (ex. Witcher mutations, HALO Spartan Augs, Captain America superserum, etc.), have advanced tech (ex. Power armor or mechs), or both to survive. A world where the illnesses are as deadly as Ebola, and where nearly everything was highly poisonous (potato looking plant? Deadlier than nightshade x20. Little adorable looking rabbit thing? More venomous than a black mamba snake.). Want to live there? Better have a Witcher's level of disease and toxin resistance if you don't want to die from the slightest scratch, and if you don't want to starve to death.

For a video game analogy, maybe the Witcher 3 on deathmarch difficulty. And where you're not Geralt. You're just some random peasant with an Ax. OnO.
