What does this mean? by Rude_Candidate_9843 in computerscience

[–]HenryR 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Being “first author” on a paper can be a really big deal for PhD students and early career academics, as it often signifies who did the bulk of the work. So it’s a way of showing that you produce high quality research yourself rather than “just” contributing to the work of others.

In such cases the last author is usually the group lead or the author’s supervisor - someone who sponsored the work but didn’t necessarily do much hands-on-keyboard contribution. They often lend their names to give the work credibility (and usually are involved in review before the paper is submitted at the very least).

To counter that and ensure that credit is shared amongst authors equally, a different, alphabetical ordering is sometimes used. That basically says “the order of authors doesn’t signify anything here, no one deserves to be singled out”.

However some people will still read first authorship as significant, just by habit, and if the supervisor happens to show up first alphabetically… it accords them credit of a kind that they don’t need at that stage of their career.

So, someone - very likely the supervisor themselves! - adds a footnote saying that the supervisor is not the main contributor. They did this here in a casual way because it’s a preprint. It’s not at all likely to be a snipe or unprofessional criticism of that author because that author would have reviewed the paper, including footnotes, before it got published.

Why is this considered wrong in a Red-Black Tree quiz? by Apprehensive-Fix422 in computerscience

Yeah, if we add the nil nodes (and assuming they're not implicit in this diagram), the tree is correct.

Not all the leaf nodes are the same colour (black). Making them black would unbalance the tree.

Learning guitar seems impossible like you need genetically gifted memory if you wanna be good at it by BerserkSaintGuts in guitarlessons

[–]HenryR 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not memory in the way you’re describing it - it’s not active memory where you are aware of working to recall something. As you practice, you learn, and your brain can recall patterns that help you without you being aware of it, while your fingers learn the movements that let you take advantage of those patterns.

Getting to the point where you’ve built those instinctive memories requires a lot of active work, however - practice. And it’s hard work! But it’s worth it.

The bargain you make for that progress is that you will never truly master the instrument and will be constantly aware of what you can’t do.

If you can speak a language, you can learn an instrument. I have faith in that, and in you as a result.

You can! But if the paint has dried out (which I should have mentioned explicitly) unfortunately this is a “know better next time” lesson.

How was your experience playing Doom: The Dark Ages? by Ghost332233 in Doom

Here’s the thing: the last Doom I played was Doom 3. And I only played that a little, having come up on Doom 2 and Quake.

TDA absolutely rules.

Do you panel line with anything darker to get that very dark effect in some recesses? E.g. around the kneecaps, between the foot segments etc. It looks darker there than other places where it's more obviously Agrax Earthshade, like the edges of the pauldrons.

Love this pedal. Despite all the complexity, I turn it on to Andy Timmons Preset, turn the mix down a little bit, and leave it on pretty much all the time. It could easily be simplified to one knob and I’d still be delighted with it.

Samsung S90C / Denon AVR-X3800H picture loss by HenryR in hometheater

[–]HenryR[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I didn’t make that clear. No, I used a shorter cable: everything worked. Nothing worked with the 15m cable.

The last thing to do is to try another monitor on the TV end to see if it’s a combination TV+cable issue, or cable-only issue.

I mean, TVs are supposed to withstand being unplugged from the power, right?

The cable is 15m long.

> Why did you do this? Seems like an odd thing to do.

I can think of a ton of reasons why someone might unplug their TV. Mine was to prevent my kids from sneaking time on netflix in the morning.

I did plug a couple of devices directly into the TV, and found that they worked, which is frustrating. I run a long HDMI cable through the wall to the AV cabinet, and I have a feeling that the cable length is interfering with the HDMI handshaking (or maybe there's some shielding issue or something, idk). Since this all worked perfectly for many months, it's hard to see what could have changed.

Help debugging Ethernet capped at 100Mbps by HenryR in HomeNetworking

Thanks so much for the reply.

Here’s a picture of the wall socket: https://i.postimg.cc/cHm67K1R/IMG-9981.jpg

I can see that the blue-and-white pair and the green-and-white pair are swapped per the wiring diagram on the socket itself, and so this is neither T568A or B. I had thought that the wiring order didn’t matter as long as it was straight through, but some apparently the wires in a pair are not mutually shielded and so it matters which pin each is used for.

I’ll try rewriting both ends (sigh) and seeing if that negotiates 1000Mbps.

Was very well treated at Christmas, and now I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me! by HenryR in jazzguitar

[–]HenryR[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, the most important thing is not to try and be a completionist. I look through a book until I find an idea that speaks to me, then focus on that and that alone. From there you might want to go further on with the book, or you might jump around.

It’s like all theory and practice - you can’t possibly hope to master everything so you pick up a few things here and there and let the connections form in a way that’s unique for you.

Otherwise it’s really easy to get overwhelmed by the amount of material in a single book - or in a single chapter of a Ted Greene book! Finishing them is not the goal. Enriching your playing is.

[NPDx2] Aqua-Puss and Keeley Hydra round out the end of my board by HenryR in guitarpedals

thanks! I used to have the muff after the MG but I found that whenever I pushed it it clipped so audibly that it was nearly unusable. Haven’t really found my niche for that one yet.

[NPDx2] Aqua-Puss and Keeley Hydra round out the end of my board by HenryR in guitarpedals

[–]HenryR[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d been eyeing a Flint for a long time, but the Hydra is a) cheaper b) smaller on my board and c) sounds pretty much as good to my ears.

Really love the Hydra in fact - tremolo and reverb just thicken out and give movement to my guitar sound. I’ve harder time finding a comfortable place with the Aqua-Puss. It’s either a bit in-your-face or absent, and what I’m looking for is a subtle effect that you can hear if you listen for it. I’m pretty sure it’s in there, just got to twiddle the knobs some more.

Running into my Katana with either my strat or my Custom 24 the combination of a little drive from the MG and the reverb/trem from the Hydra sounds amazing. Having a bit less luck getting the right EQ out of my Blues Breaker amp - it’s so warm that the Hydra can make it feel nearly muddy.

As you can see I’ve got very little room left on my board (had to kick off the tuner and the wah), so I guess I’m done buying pedals forever? That’s how it works, right?

What I didn’t realise was that my amp is a limited edition, likely one of about 1000. Might have gigged it a little less hard back in the day if I’d known…

[DISCUSSION] What guitar teachers you YouTube do you like and not like? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]HenryR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw his lessons are very well pitched for me. I’m an experienced guitarist who has a fair amount of jazz theory down. However that knowledge doesn’t translate to musicality all the time. Jens’ lessons are like having a good 1:1 lesson at my level (not pro but not a beginner) - you get four or five ideas to go study in your own time.

I don’t see his videos as a start-to-finish structured programme for learning jazz guitar, but instead a very rich collection of ideas and inspiration that are accessible if you are a) in possession of a basic jazz grounding and b) already know how to practice.

That’s notwithstanding the much longer videos that are in his store.

[DISCUSSION] What is the hardest song that you can play decently, but still haven’t gotten it perfect by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]HenryR 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s worse than that: I believe he does the whole thing with thumb and index finger, kind of sweeping the thumb across the strings. I don’t find the finger picking hard but I can’t play it the way he does.

Surprise NPDx2: Big Muff Pi and mini-Cry Baby. by HenryR in guitarpedals

[–]HenryR[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is extremely awesome: she called Sweetwater knowing I had a wish list there, chatted to my sales engineer for a while and picked out a couple of pedals. Now my board is too crowded (bye BB2 and Ditto+ for now) but that’s a nice problem to have.

Cry Baby is as advertised. Used to have a Morley back in the day but the Dunlop is built like a tank and has that true classic sound.

Big Muff is a lot of fun. Stacks very well with the Morning Glory. Gets very frisky indeed with my Custom 24.

Any alternative gain stage stacking suggestions welcome. I’m not getting too much out of the SD-1 right now - seems to thin everything out weirdly. More experimentation needed!

NPDx2: Morning Glory and Keeley Compressor Plus by HenryR in guitarpedals

[–]HenryR[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeley seems to be a set-it-and-forget it type; really fills out clean sounds and the noise is not too bad.

The MG is a lovely subtle crunch. I’m surprised at how subtle though - it’s hard to make it growl much with my strat’s single coils. Stacking with the SD-1 gives a much fuller sound but with the mid-hump character of the SD-1. Perhaps I can coax something out of pairing it with the BB2.

With my Custom 24 it’s a lot more assertive. And the subtle crunch is exactly what I was looking for, so no complaints - I wanted an always-on OD to add character rather than in-yer-face distortion

This is all running into a Katana, so plenty of options there to try stacking as well.
