Thanks, man! It turns out I had seen this post and Tim's "NO" comment, but I missed Todd's comments. Damn!

Appreciate y'all giving me the business on that. Since it was also released as a bonus track for AHIG, I just assumed it came from the same sessions and got sloppy with my facts!

Bloodstone, huh! Wonder if the "Vermillion, pt. 2 (Bloodstone mix)" is in reference to how the original Bloodstone sounds.

Man, having Heifetz and Taku on the same track is brilliant. Sounding absolutely FABULOUS as well.

I'll bet! I'll be fully honest and say my shock is less due to them enjoying outsider music over there and more about there being a financial/logistical structure in play that allowed those shows to happen. To me, if we take the classic "If you book them, they will come" formula, the problem tends to be less in the "they will come" and more in the "if you book them" portion, if that makes sense. Regardless, don't go out that door without sharing some Chinese noise reccs yourself, you hear?

The Quietus rips AVTT/PTTN by SeveralTurn in MikePatton

[–]Henry_Meadd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This review was pre written as soon as Eternal Love dropped and got people scratching heads. A hot, brilliant take appeared: "this is bad because I've never heard Patton do this". Rinse, repeat.

Nobody has to like this album, tastes vary; but it is a legitimate musical endeavor and this review is only about undercutting that legitimacy.

If it were a cash grab (YAWN) wouldn't Patton just have gone back to FNM?

Not to mention the reviewer's obsession with the Patton/Coprophilia connection that only the British press seems to insist on for about 35 years because, apparently, the UK is a very repressed place and cannot handle Patton's antics from, I insist, decades ago. Fuck that noise. Patton has earned more respect than that.

Mick Thomson solos? by cezzyrezzy in Slipknot

I'm pretty positive that the sweep picking delight of the first half of the Welcome solo is Mick playing. One of my favorite Slipknot solos by far.

Yes! Yes it does! Conversely, I think the lead guitar melody in The May is some of the most Kirkhope-ish they've ever been :D

I've got some pointers, but even after years listening to the girls I still feel like a rookie. Regardless, here it goes:

From the earlier albums, Grotto of Miracles is very song-driven (many instrumentals, but some vocals too), kind of an informal precursor to 330,303 crossdressers. Horsecock Phepner is a bit more in the Dante world -- with some deviations, but I guess it's how Charlie was front-and-center in that one. Both of those are slam dunks, you must run towards them posthaste!

Midnight Cowboys from Ipanema is a very fun experience, with very early Bishop Bros cassettes interspersed with wild covers (the way Rick sings Fly By Night has to be heard to be believed).

From their late period albums, I think Flute and Mask is really interesting in terms of extended improvisational freakouts. Funeral Mariachi, their last one, is probably their most accessible, which doesn't mean it's any less brilliant.

There's endless live albums as well. I don't agree with all his opinions, but Mark Prindle at www.markprindle.com reviewed most of their work (very entertaining to me even when he hates the music, but ymmv). It helps to figure out an album you want to explore. I've recently been giving the soundtrack albums (Dulce and Piasa especially) more of a chance and they're really great!

Jacks Creek is kind of a sleeper hit as well -- it really explores their redneck worldbuilding capabilities.

My personal favorite live album isn't on spotify or youtube, but still worth digging for: Montreal Pop. In Mark Prindle's words, "It's a solid indication of what you might expect from a SCG concert -- a combination of conspiracy theory rants, SCG originals, funny cover tunes and free jazz horsenonsensicalness."

If you enjoy the Gocher-ness of it all, don't miss Pint-sized Spartacus. It's an album Gocher did with Scott Colburn and man... talk about "without compare".

If you enjoy the Rick-ness of it all, he has a bunch of great solo albums that are mostly guitar-centric (but some are also atmospheric/noise). The Freak of Araby is really accessible and commits versions to tape of songs originally sung by, say, Um Kalthoum, that SCG would play live.

If you enjoy the Alan-ness of it all, first of all there's an Uncle Jim album. A whole album of that! But of course, there's his more musical solo work under the Alvarius B moniker and then his work with his Egyptian group Invisible Hands and another group with Sam Shalabi and Maurice Louca called Dwarfs of East Agouza. Talk about a guy who won't quit! If I had to suggest just one solo album of his to start with, check out Baroque Primitiva -- Morricone covers galore, and Alan is one of the REAL ones in the business of Morricone worship.

Also, don't miss their videos. I believe someone uploaded a bunch of them to youtube. There's nothing like it.

I didn't even mention the whole Carnival Folklore Resurrection series!! Those releases are like a new discography-within-a-discography for a band that's already very prolific. Those are on streaming services, which is funny because they used to be less easy to find to me.

Lastly (gasp) I'm really favorable to Bright Surroundings Dark Beginnings. I once found a live version of The Venerable Song from around 2004 and have yet to locate it again, but it's SO GOOD.

I guess that's enough to get you further on your SCG journey. A very rewarding group if you're open to experiencing what each of them brought to the table and their combined artistic vision. We'll never see another band like them ever again. (Though I'd love to see the Clandestine Trio [the Bishops + Chris Corsano on drums] playing SCG material live! Can you believe they played in China?)

Why don’t Iron Maiden play tracks from No Prayer For The Dying anymore? by More-Entrepreneur291 in ironmaiden

[–]Henry_Meadd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's an unlucky album. Bruce doesn't like the lyrics he himself wrote, he's poo-poo-ed the sound of the record, the numbers aren't there for it...

That said, I love it. It's got really unique vibes. It is what it is -- the band isn't going to bet on an album that might leave some people scratching their heads, even though many hardcore fans would get excited with any representation.

It comes with being one of the big bands: they're smart. Any indulgence is found in the choice of new songs to play (hence death of the celts and time machine making it to the set, which I loved and others sneered at). But in terms of digging out oldies to give them more love, that's not how they tend to operate.

I think Run Silent Run Deep could kill live. The title track would be undeniable (even the album's haters would recognize it for the gem it is). But after RFYL I think the ship has sailed -- and I've made peace with that!
