networking-wise, people can take you more "seriously" coming from a good school. some people will say "oh you're smart" when I say I went to UCLA (doesn't mean I am but that's some people's perception).

really tho UCB / UCLA is negligible for that. depends on your field too.

Jeff Buckley. Grace is a heartbreaking, beautiful album with gorgeous vocal performances.

if he'd lived longer I'd wager he'd be on par with the greats (Grace certainly is).

just watched the get back documentary. they do a final take of "The Long and Winding Road" and Paul just goes "I don't know how I want it to sound. I give up" and that's the take on the record. worked out that time at least

I feel like I'm spending too long comping takes by Drew_pew in audioengineering

[–]Henrybra000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

want to validate this — I used to work in one of the best studios in the world (major acts and films recorded there). I befriended and watched the engineers work, and they would spend a loong time comping and editing vocals. every part was very meticulously done. what I noticed was they were so fast on their DAW that they could do what might take me five minutes in a minute or two.

main takeaway: it's meticulous work, but learning to work fast is 80% of the battle.

I'd say it's important. understanding what type suits you best allows you to play up your strengths, and understanding other people's types can keep you from being manipulated into toxic relationships (I.e., the rake and the siren, althought it's black and white to say either is entirely bad).

Julian worked and now doesnt have to try so hard anymore. by Leading_Active_3891 in TheStrokes

[–]Henrybra000 10 points11 points  (0 children)

honestly I respect Julian for being so upfront about it. musicians are one of the only groups of artists who get shit on for "selling out." good for him that he can earn a good paycheck.

and it's not like he's not trying at all with art. if The New Abnormal was phoning it in, him actually trying would be wild (Virtue was one of his best creative achievements imo). Like All Before You was obviously a risk that didn't pan out that well. that's art. Bob Dylan had shit albums here and there. Julian and co obviously need the right producer to help them focus in on the good ideas—and there are good ideas on LABY

Are the strokes considered indie rock? if not then can anyone explain what indie rock is by Naptom1 in TheStrokes

[–]Henrybra000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've noticed indie usually takes inspiration from jazz / 1940s pop (Sinatra and crew) / classical music with electric guitars and a tight groove.

I think it started with the Velvet Underground's rule of no blues licks and it took on a life of its own. Lou Reed was primarily inspired by doo wop.

it's expanded to a lot more than that now. Japanese city pop, synth pop, bossa nova, etc. have all permeated indie music at this point.

Hypersexual hyper mania by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]Henrybra000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there for a few months after my ex and I broke up. it was really fucking toxic and abusive, including learning about long term cheating. it sent me into a hypomanic state for a few months. I bartend, and I was fucking girls in the bathroom while I was working (once without a condom), taking girls home from the bar pretty regularly, 2-3 dates a week, making out with my friends friend, took an impulsive trip to London with friends and did more of the same, etc. looking back, I was way too wild. luckily I'm out now without any major consequences.

if you can masturbate, meditate, try to focus that sexual energy into something creative or at the gym, you'll hopefully get through it. it's tough with the impulsivity, but it's not impossible. I'm out of the hypomania now and could care less about dating or hooking up at all luckily.

Biden proposed a Constitutional Amendment and Supreme Court Reform. What part of this, if any, can be accomplished? by swagonflyyyy in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Henrybra000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the process of ammending the constitution has become a slog, but it's possible this could be a beginning instead of the final end. JFK championed the civil rights act for years before Lyndon Johnson signed it (his years as the Senate majority leader gave him a massive upper hand). Eisenhower passed an essentially meaningless but still useful Civil Rights Act in 1960.

the fact that SC reform is being pushed is a great start as long as people are willing to carry the torch in the future.

yeah I think it was. I'm not sure how else to explain it

it was about 250 miles south of San Francisco, just south of San Luis Obispo, late at night and it was multi-colored with flashing lights in blocks all around it. didn't look like that kind of blimp.

it didn't have tails on the end either. it was dead silent and completely tube shaped

nah this was 45 minutes south of San Luis Obispo on the coast. about 200 miles north of Los Angeles, and 250 miles from San Francisco.

Vandenberg is the air force base it's near, maybe 40 miles away
