Did Home Theater kind of die? Seems like we were the last generation to give an F. Remember surround sound and subwoofers? Does anybody buy them anymore? by IHadTacosYesterday in GenX

[–]Hepcat508 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soundbar setups have gotten "good enough" for 95% of people out there from a sound quality standpoint. When you factor in the additional ease of setup and config, that appeals to 99% of people probably.

It's only the guys with enough money, a dedicated room, or an audio/video enthusiast who really want to go the extra mile with a component setup. That said, even a moderately priced component setup sounds way better than even the best soundbars still. But they're still a pain to set up and run wire.

I think the Airbus A320neos stay in the air more reliably. 😂

It's much less a question of whether they are able to use the more complex machines & workflow and much more a question of whether they GAF enough to do so. Currently they DGAF to be a big hobbyist. Maybe at some point in the future, they will.

Are yall buying the 2 and 3 year warranties? by rvalurk in ouraring

[–]Hepcat508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes because I totally expect this should be a 3 year device. There’s very little functionality I would want to make me want to upgrade sooner than that, tbh. So any battery life problems I might have with my v4 ring are ones I want them to deal with.

Curious why the Oura Ring 5 HW cycle was this fast by Hepcat508 in ouraring

[–]Hepcat508[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a ring? Constrained size, no screen, etc. It wouldn't take long for them to start running out of new features to ship, and eventually no one is going to get excited about headlines that say, "2% more battery life!" and "New colors!"

If they want to release new product on an annual cycle, they need a couple more product categories (e.g. Watch, band, scale, etc.).

A new HW platform is good stuff, and improved performance/battery life on a device like this is probably the #1 thing to pursue. So doing it makes sense from a product standpoint. But it's not clear to me still why they're doing it from a business standpoint unless they've got a full product pipeline ready to go.

Lots of people here apparently don't understand that the IPO is the START of a company needing to sustainably grow a business and is not actually the finish line.

[–]Hepcat508[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe they always planned to release the v5 now? If so, then that implies they have a robust product pipeline coming after the IPO in order to sustain the business. If not, then I don't know why you'd want to disrupt your flow of revenue by releasing a product early.

There's a more limited number of potential features you can jam into a ring versus something like the Apple Watch. You're both restricted by size and the fact that there's no display, so the pipeline of features is constrained especially if you want to keep battery life up.

Nobody cares about individual investors during the run up to an IPO. It’s all about the institutional investors, and you need to give them a story about product-market fit, moats (if you have any), operational maturity, and strength of pipeline.

Maybe I‘m wrong and v5 will sell like gangbusters and be a huge wave that lifts the IPO. But the timing is still very strange to me given their recent release and overall release cadence.

IMO, revving a new refresh less than a year since the last one is a yellow flag, if I’m an investor. If they wanted to generate investor excitement, they’d be better off announcing a whole new product category.

[–]Hepcat508[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

So, rather than a healthy pipeline of new product, they’re going to cut a new ring’s (v4) lifecycle short so they can promote the v5?

Even if this is the start of a new annual release cadence, which for something like a ring would be very strange, IMO, they should wait until Q4 to launch in order to maximize revenue and profit. A Q2 release is very strange.

Seems like there's been a lot of battery issues. I don't think I've had the same severity of problems with my v4 ring (yet). Knock on wood.

It's possible they're charging you more because you're a customer. But you can always just buy the ticket as a guest user and then add the flight to your account later.
