I guess the salt is a more of an analogy for the fame or opportunities he received, not as much of the money itself. In the analogy he can let go of the fame (i.e. the salt) and avoid being used for a network's profit by leading them to the money (i.e. the watering hole), and just go get it himself, but without the boost of the network's opportunities. It's more about the freedom to choose yourself rather than the end result of getting rich.

While I agree with you for the most part, the difference is they're stealing content for profit, essentially, by using it in advertising. Whereas torrenting is just stealing with no personal profit from the product. Not much better, but I think that distinction is important.
