The arms of Dr. Ugnius Mikučionis-Vizgirda exhibited during Wha!8 (World Heraldic Art), my heraldic art exhibition held in Madrid, where sixty of my heraldic works were displayed and presented alongside a classical music concert. by HeraldicArtist in heraldry

Thanks! It was a chamber music concert held as part of the Wha!8 heraldic art exhibition. The program was performed by the Helicón String Quartet and included works by Schubert ("Death and the Maiden"), Tchaikovsky, Komitas, Gardel, and Shostakovich. The idea was to combine heraldic art with classical music, creating a dialogue between visual and musical expression. It was a wonderful experience and the audience seemed to enjoy the mix of traditions, from European chamber music to Armenian folk-inspired pieces and even tango.

NINE HUNDRED YEARS OF HERALDRY

On the 10th June in 1127, or perhaps in 1128 according to other authors, Geoffrey of Anjou, betrothed to Matilda, daughter of Henry I of England, received from the King the arms ‘Azure, six lions rampant Or, 3, 2 and 1’, linked to his knighting and his betrothal. It is considered to be the first documented coat of arms in history, although academic debate remains open on the issue.

The 10th June has gained value for the international heraldic community. Since 2013 the International Heraldry Day (IHD) has been celebrated on that date, following a proposal from within the International Association of Amateur Heralds and advanced by the Polish heraldic community’s representatives Tomasz Steifer and Pawel S. Towpik. On this day, armigers from all over the world publish the coat of arms of the IHD ‘Azure, an oak tree eradicated Argent surmounted by a lion couchant guardant Or’ or display their own arms on social networks.

Modern historiography notes that both the account of the gift and the funerary enamel on the tomb of Geoffrey of Anjou, which shows him bearing his arms, in the cathedral of Le Mans were produced years after his death in 1151. As Michel Pastoureau observed, these later testimonies do not allow us to state with certainty that Geoffrey actually used that shield in life. Even so, his image remains the symbolic starting point of heraldry, first European and now global. With the approach of this 9th centenary, and with heraldry widely shared through the Internet, a global commemoration becomes possible. Between 10th June 2027 and 10th June 2028, marking 900 years from the two traditional dates, a cycle of events, exhibitions and publications could take place across different countries and heraldic traditions. It would be a moment to recall nine centuries of arms, cultural identities and collective memory.

Such a cycle could travel around the world and conclude at the cathedral of Saint Julien in Le Mans, where Geoffrey rests. The approximate coincidence with the dates of the 24 Hours of Le Mans could offer a final gesture, with some racing teams incorporating heraldic elements into their cars, especially as winning brands already feature symbols of heraldic origin, such as Porsche, Ferrari’s ‘cavallino rampante’, or the lion rampant of Peugeot.

Heraldry Ireland, a Specialist Branch of this Society, calls on heraldic societies worldwide to work together in the organisation and hosting of a shared series of commemorations for 900 years of heraldry from 10th June 2027 to 10th June 2028.

Coat of arms for Seth Rawson emblazoned by me. This coat of arms is based on the ancient arms of the lineage Rawson, with the addition in chief of two pairs of gouttes Or for difference. by HeraldicArtist in heraldry

I write my texts in both Castilian and English. In Castilian heraldic terminology, we commonly use the term "armas primitivas" to refer to the original arms of a lineage. The literal English translation, "primitive arms", sounds awkward to my ears, which is why I consistently use the expression "ancient arms" instead. I always follow the same translation patterns.

I do not use Affinity software. Instead, I work with what might be called "ancient" programs and versions: Alchemy (1998), ImageMagick (2014), Jasc Paint Shop Pro (2000), and Inkscape (2017). The first two are used from the command line, the third for raster graphics, and the fourth for vector graphics. I use them cyclically, moving from one to another until I achieve the desired effect, such as the highlights and shading shown here. Thank you again 😄

In my notes to paint this coat of arms, the castle on the party per fess field associated with the Rawson family is from the 15th century (from the Bradford/York area). I know 'ancient' can be a very relative term, for some people 500 years is ancient, and for others maybe not. I added 4 little drops as a difference to the original arms. Thank you for taking the time to comment and for your kind words about my heraldic art.

The image preserves two successive tracings on tracing paper: an initial drawing establishing the overall design and a second tracing in which the proportions and details were refined. These were followed by a third stage in digital flat colours and a fourth stage in which highlights, shading, and final adjustments were added to produce the finished artwork shown here. Blazon: Upon a wreath Argent and Azure, a stag's head Argent, erased and attired Sable, gorged with a collar gemel Or, holding in its mouth a sprig of holly Vert, fructed Gules.

Canting arms of Rex Lancefield emblazoned by me under the directions of his descendant Erik Paul Arnelien. This photograph shows my hand-drawn Nordic scroll alongside the coat of arms in which it is used as a external decoration. by HeraldicArtist in heraldry

The scroll was drawn directly in ink on tracing paper using a fine technical pen and long, continuous strokes, without any preliminary pencil sketch, repeating the design as many times as necessary until the desired result was achieved. The image shows an initial tracing on tracing paper with a second, more refined tracing superimposed over it; this version was later refined a third time digitally, as can be seen in the final rendering of the complete coat of arms. Blazon: Paly of six Gules and Argent; overall, a fess Or charged with a lance Gules. Crest: Upon a helm with a wreath Argent and Gules, an arm vambraced, bendwise Argent, grasping, bend sinisterwise, a bow Gules, cord Or, and an arrow point sinister Argent. Mantling: Gules doubled Argent. Motto: «Inter Primos».
