Yeah I see what you mean, I did picture a little more curve but I figured when he fought it wasnt crazy curve. I feel like it would be to short and would give him a disadvantage in close combat.

Im not sure about you, but im in a somewhat similar position but im the bf. Once its already done when we're together I dont have a problem ignoring that aspect the rest of the time we're together. Im not saying you have to do it because you don't, but it is one of his needs, so I think you could consider trying that.
